Vespula’s room ends when the abyssal portal is destroyed. For a controlled first team clear, keep the lux grubs alive with blossoms, damage Vespula until she actually lands, then focus the portal. Attacking the portal while she is airborne deliberately enrages her and belongs to a different method.

This is a normal Chambers of Xeric learner guide. It teaches the conventional landing route, explains why the portal and grub jobs matter, and outlines the separate Redemption approach without pretending that any tile beside the entrance is safe. Agree the method before anybody starts attacking.

Before entry: decide who maintains the grubs

The room contains Vespula, four lux grubs, the abyssal portal and medivaemia roots. Pick blossoms from the roots to feed damaged grubs. Designate a feeder in a team so the others can focus on damage and nobody assumes the low-health grub is somebody else’s job.

Bring poison treatment and enough healing and Prayer restoration for a room that can last longer than expected. Vespula can inflict severe poison, and the hatched soldiers add another poison threat. A cure is not immunity to her direct damage, and an overhead is not poison treatment.

Choose a working ranged or magic setup for Vespula while she flies, plus a weapon that can reach the portal. The portal is seven tiles beyond the accessible area; a range of eight or more is useful for the safer positions involved in portal methods. Check the actual weapon and attack setting before the raid.

One-handed powered staves and some crossbows need longrange for the positions used in the Redemption method. Different weapons have different ranges. Do not copy another player’s tile while using a shorter-range weapon that will pull you forward into Vespula.

Learn the two health systems

Vespula stings the grubs, reducing their health over time. A grub that reaches zero becomes a vespine soldier. These soldiers heal Vespula and the portal while alive, so allowing several to hatch can undo the damage the team has just dealt.

A medivaemia blossom restores 35 Hitpoints to a grub. Feed before the bar is nearly empty, especially if you need to cross the room to reach it. The blossoms use inventory space; collect a practical reserve rather than fill every slot and leave no room for recovery supplies.

The portal has its own health. Reducing Vespula is a way to create a safer opportunity to attack it, not the final completion condition. If the boss lands and every player continues clicking her instead of the portal, the useful window is being lost.

The roots and grubs are therefore part of the combat strategy. An extra player improving boss damage slightly may be less useful than one keeping all four grubs stable through a longer learner attempt.

Conventional clear: feed, land and switch

Enter with the team ready and the feeder identified. Use Protect from Missiles against Vespula’s ordinary ranged attacks, maintain poison protection and damage her with the planned flying-phase setup. Keep clear of her body rather than standing underneath it.

The feeder checks the grub bars throughout the damage phase, collects more blossoms when needed and calls if help is required. Other players should avoid blocking the feeder’s route or leaving a critically low grub untreated because their next attack is ready.

At low health Vespula can land, but a particular-looking health bar is not a substitute for seeing that she has actually grounded. Once she lands, switch the team’s damage to the abyssal portal immediately. Use the planned weapon range without walking into an unsafe position.

If the portal survives the grounded period, Vespula takes flight and heals. Return to the agreed boss-and-grub jobs, then create another landing opportunity. A controlled repeat is better than somebody improvising an airborne portal attack while the rest of the team still expects the conventional route.

If soldiers hatch, stop the healing spiral

A hatched soldier adds attacks and restores health to Vespula and the portal. Identify the missed grub, stabilise health and poison, and deal with the soldier rather than endlessly damage the portal while it is being healed.

Flying soldiers require an attack that reaches them. When grounded they can be finished with melee; do not leave one alive indefinitely, as it can explode after remaining grounded. Keep the feeder monitoring the other grubs while the team resolves the add.

After a soldier dies, the grub returns. Resume feeding rather than assume that corner of the room no longer needs attention. Several consecutive hatches usually indicate that the feeder needs a better route, a larger blossom reserve or help from another player.

A reset or another attempt may be sensible when the room has become unmanageable, but first distinguish a recoverable single hatch from repeated deaths with no supplies. Communicate the decision so one player is not still fighting while everyone else has abandoned the plan.

What the Redemption method changes

The faster portal-focused method attacks while Vespula is airborne. She enrages, flies around the portal area and threatens nearby players with stings and rapid damage beneath her body. Protect from Melee does not turn that enraged positioning into a safe tanking spot.

Redemption can provide recovery when health crosses its activation threshold, but it consumes the remaining Prayer points. The method needs a suitable health reserve, usable restoration, the correct weapon range and repeated returns to a verified safe position. Prayer enhance can help sustain the Prayer supply; it does not make an empty bar harmless.

A useful practice order is to identify the correct row or column and return tile, confirm that an attack does not drag you into danger, then learn the attack-and-return rhythm with restoration ready. Health and Prayer must be checked after each proc. Do not wait for a prayer to protect you after it has already consumed its points.

This article’s default clear does not require Redemption. Learn the precise portal method separately with the tile and weapon setup demonstrated, rather than treat this overview as a complete tick-by-tick script. In teams, do not mix the two methods without agreement: an airborne portal hit changes what Vespula is doing for everyone nearby.

Problem

First check

Portal health keeps returning

Are vespine soldiers alive?

Boss grounds but the room does not end

Did the team actually switch to the portal?

Character walks into the enraged boss

Weapon range, attack setting and chosen return tile

Poison drains supplies despite prayer

Cure/immunity is separate from protection prayer

Redemption procs once, then fails

Restore Prayer and re-enable it; the proc consumes Prayer

Multiple grubs hatch together

Feeder route, blossom reserve and whether support is needed

Collect the room supplies and review one cause

Destroying the portal ends the encounter and provides useful raid potions, including a guaranteed overload (+). Distribute the actual drops and check the team’s recovery supplies before continuing. A potion on the floor is not yet a dose in the next player’s inventory.

CoX deaths preserve regular Hardcore Ironman status, while Hardcore Group Ironmen lose a group life. Death still affects points and raid supplies. For the next attempt, choose a concrete improvement—feeding earlier, switching faster on the landing or verifying range—rather than add an expensive weapon without solving the repeated error.
