For your first Chambers of Xeric clear, join a learner team that will explain the chosen rooms and give you one clear Olm role. Bring working melee, Ranged and Magic setups, help prepare supplies and follow the team’s stop calls. Learning a normal team raid is a more manageable first project than combining unfamiliar rooms with a precise solo Olm cycle.
This OSRS Chambers of Xeric guide covers a normal learner-team run from the mountain to the reward chest. It explains preparation, room priorities and Olm’s main cues. It is not an exact solo 4:1 route or a Challenge Mode walkthrough; those need different movement and supply planning.
Reach Mount Quidamortem and form the party
CoX is in Great Kourend at Mount Quidamortem. Use a route your account has unlocked, such as the minecart network or the journey from the Shayzien area. On your first visit, speak to the Mountain Guide to establish the useful return shortcut. Xeric’s Honour on a talisman is a later unlock from using an ancient tablet, so do not expect it on an untouched account.
There is no requirement to own a dragon hunter lance, twisted bow or Shadow just to enter. For a useful learner baseline, around 80 offensive combat skills and Hitpoints, 70 or higher Defence and the appropriate protection prayers are practical targets. The teacher’s team requirements may be higher because they reflect the planned scale and how much support is available.
Use the recruiting board and confirm the correct host, party and normal layout. The team should review the room list before committing. A smaller set of familiar rooms is a sensible learning choice, while a full layout or Challenge Mode adds encounters and time. Do not join a high-scale raid assuming it behaves like a small team.
Build a small, complete switch
Job | Useful learner direction | Check with the host |
|---|---|---|
General melee and Olm’s melee hand | A suitable melee weapon, defender and modest strength switches | Crush for Tekton and stab for Vasa crystals if those rooms are included |
Ranged rooms and Olm’s head | Crossbow with compatible bolts or a supported bow setup | Range needed for positioning and sufficient ammunition |
Olm’s mage hand | Charged powered staff with an accurate Magic switch | Charges, attack range and the team’s marked positions |
Preparation and utility | Required tools, poison solution and an agreed special-attack role | Who brings pickaxe, hammer and fire-wall solution |
A whip, suitable crossbow and trident illustrate the three combat roles, but do not cover every optional room equally well. Show the actual setup before the host chooses the layout. A defence-reduction weapon can help the team, yet a teacher may cover that job while a learner keeps the inventory simpler.
Keep the Magic weapon beside its body and leg switches, with the same structure for the other styles. Equip each complete set before starting. Check the spellbook, charges and ammunition instead of discovering a missing supply at Olm. Agree a way to extinguish fire walls, such as a supported water or ice spell with the correct book and runes.
Understand the raid’s flow and preparation
A normal Chambers run moves through two floors of variable combat, puzzle and resource rooms before Great Olm. The host’s selected layout determines which encounters appear. Do not run into the next room while the team is assigning targets or preparing supplies; crossing a boundary can begin an encounter.
Scavengers and other rooms provide materials for raid supplies. A preparation room lets the group grow herbs and make potions. Agree who farms, who collects secondaries and who makes each potion tier. 55 Farming is useful for the main raid herbs; 78 Herblore makes strong aid, revitalisation and prayer-enhance potions, while strong overloads require 90 Herblore to make yourself.
You do not need all those skills on every account if teammates cover them. Ask what to collect and where to deposit it rather than making potions at random. Storage separates personal items from raid-shareable supplies; collect everything needed before going to Olm and clear personal storage when finishing the raid.
Overloads cost 50 Hitpoints on drinking and reapply their combat boost for five minutes before returning that health. Drink with enough health to absorb the initial cost and heal afterward. Raid aid heals, revitalisation restores, and prayer enhance supports Prayer over time. They are different tools, not interchangeable bottles.
Room priorities for a learner
Encounter | Your immediate job |
|---|---|
Guardians | Use a pickaxe on crush; move away after a hit to avoid the retaliatory area attack. |
Skeletal Mystics | Use Ranged and focus the called target; avoid drawing several into attacking at once. |
Lizardman Shamans | Watch jumps, poison and summoned spawns; use the host’s lure or safe position. |
Muttadiles | Stay aware of melee distance and the meat-tree plan; do not stand beside the large one for a free stomp. |
Tekton, Vasa, Vespula or Vanguards | Stop for a separate room briefing; these add weapon, target or team-health coordination requirements. |
Mystics can still damage you through Magic protection, so use positioning and focused damage rather than assuming an overhead makes them harmless. Shamans’ poison can consume a learner inventory quickly; have the agreed poison solution available. Muttadiles can hit hard even when a run feels routine.
For puzzle rooms, the team should assign jobs before players act. Crabs redirect a light beam, thieving gathers grubs, ice demon needs its warming process and tightrope requires a controlled crossing plan. Follow the solve and avoid clicking objects at random. A puzzle label does not guarantee that the room has no combat or damage.
Before crossing Olm’s barrier
Ask the leader to identify the mage hand, melee hand and your standing area. Names refer to the intended attack style, which is clearer than guessing left and right from a screenshot. Agree who handles head movement and what you do during portals, burns and the final paired-hand phase.
Take the raid potions allocated to you, repair health and Prayer, and put the combat switches within reach. A common learner preparation includes overload and prayer enhance with several aid and revitalisation potions; the exact quantities depend on team scale, role and expected mistakes. Do not remove healing merely to match an experienced player’s layout.
After crossing the barrier, you cannot simply leave the arena alive with a normal escape teleport. Treat it as the final supply checkpoint. If a weapon has too little charge or a player missed the storage stop, solve that before starting.
Olm: match the target and watch the next cue
In a small team, Olm normally has three hand phases followed by a head phase. Use Magic on the mage hand and melee on the melee hand. The head is the final Ranged target; damage done to it before the last phase is healed back. Larger raid sizes add phases, so follow the host’s phase calls.
The head uses a green Magic projectile and a crystal Ranged projectile. Match the overhead to the attack, while continuing to watch the floor. Coloured spheres need their own response: red means Protect from Melee, green means Protect from Missiles and purple means Protect from Magic. Reapply the correct prayer if the mechanic disables your previous overhead.
Cue | What to do |
|---|---|
Crystal growth under your tile | Move clear before it bursts, then resume attacking. |
Lightning travelling along the room | Step out of its path; check your overhead again if struck. |
Paired teleport markers | Meet your paired player on the same tile, using the team’s agreed meeting point. |
“Burn with me!” | Keep separation from unaffected teammates so the burn does not spread. |
Acid trailing under you | Move deliberately along an agreed empty area without laying it through the team. |
Fire wall | Use the prepared extinguishing method or call the assigned helper immediately. |
Do not chase damage while standing on a hazard. Move, stabilise and attack again. The team’s head movement can skip some attacks, but a learner should still recognise the mechanics in case the planned cycle breaks. Wandering into an unassigned area can also change where Olm looks.
The final hands and head phase
When the head glows in the penultimate hand phase, coordinate both hands rather than killing one far ahead of the other. A disabled hand can recover if the other remains alive too long. Stop attacking on the leader’s call, bring both low and finish them close together.
The melee hand can show an infinity symbol and heal from incoming damage. Stop damaging it during that window. Continuing to attack can undo the team’s progress and make the timing harder. Resume when the healing state has ended and the leader calls the finish.
For the final head phase, switch to Ranged, continue matching Magic/Ranged attacks and avoid falling-crystal shadows. Stand on the blue healing-pool tiles when that mechanic appears so Olm does not drain the team and heal itself. Acid, burn and other power mechanics can still matter; the head phase is not simply a stationary damage race.
Death, points and the next attempt
Ordinary CoX deaths are safe for outside equipment and regular Hardcore Ironman status, but are dangerous for Hardcore Group Ironman lives. Raid-only carried supplies drop on death, and personal points are penalised. Very low personal points can instead trigger a team penalty. Do not deliberately die with supplies unless the group has explicitly agreed a specialised practice plan.
After a death, collect the supplies you need, announce that you are returning and follow the leader’s position call. Do not repeatedly rush back into the same hazard while depleted. Ordinary Ironmen can raid with teammates because raids use their own loot rules; Group Ironman prestige and UIM inventory planning still need separate attention.
After Olm dies, claim the reward chest and empty personal storage. Unique rewards depend on points and chance, so a learner completion does not promise a purple. Review one or two mistakes from the run: a missed prayer, an unnecessary movement or an unfinished prep job. Repeat a manageable team layout before adding advanced solo cycles or more switches.
If the setup still has a clear gap in prayer control, damage or supplies, use the OSRS PvM progression guide to choose a focused preparation goal. Your first useful milestone is understanding your role throughout a complete raid.
