Choose a first raid by the learning environment you can actually use. A low-level Tombs of Amascut run lets you practise at your own pace, while a Chambers of Xeric learner team can explain roles and handle preparation together. Theatre of Blood Entry Mode is a separate introduction to its bosses; completing it does not mean you are ready for a normal Theatre team.
This OSRS raids preparation guide helps you check access, equipment, supplies and account rules before committing to a session. It covers the three established raids above. The goal is a prepared first attempt, with enough room in the inventory and enough time to understand what went wrong.
Pick one first-raid project
Starting situation | Useful first project | Plan before entering |
|---|---|---|
You want solo practice with adjustable difficulty | ToA at raid level 0 | Complete Beneath Cursed Sands; keep invocations off while learning |
You have a patient teacher or regular team | Normal Chambers of Xeric | Agree room roles, potion preparation and Olm positions |
You want to learn Theatre encounters or progress A Night at the Theatre | ToB Entry Mode | Prepare for all six bosses and a full-session attempt |
None of these routes requires owning a twisted bow or Tumeken’s shadow just to begin learning. Each still needs a coherent setup and an understanding of its mechanics. A cheaper weapon used correctly is useful; a weapon that cannot perform the required role is not fixed by calling the run a learner raid.
Separate access requirements from recommendations
CoX is reached at Mount Quidamortem in Great Kourend. Its practical combat and skilling recommendations are different from a hard quest gate. ToA requires Beneath Cursed Sands. Its Entry, Normal and Expert categories correspond to raid levels 0–149, 150–299 and 300 or higher; raising the level changes the enemies as well as the selected mechanics.
For a mixed combat starting point, around 80 in the relevant offensive skills and Hitpoints is a useful target, with enough Defence and Prayer to support the setup. That is guidance rather than a universal requirement. A lower-level ToA practice run and a demanding normal Theatre team do not have the same expectations.
Check each item’s own requirements too. A trident needs its Magic level and charges; a melee weapon needs the correct Attack level; offensive prayers can need both levels and quest or scroll unlocks. Being able to enter the raid does not automatically let you use everything in somebody else’s inventory screenshot.
Build three working styles before adding luxury switches
Role | A practical starting direction | Common missing detail |
|---|---|---|
Melee | A weapon suited to the raid’s targets, with a defender and manageable armour switches | ToA values stab; a slash weapon is not interchangeable everywhere |
Ranged | A crossbow with compatible bolts, or a supported bow setup | Bolts, attack range, ammunition recovery and charges |
Magic | A suitable powered staff and a small accurate Magic switch | Staff charges, spellbook and utility-spell runes |
Utility | Raid-specific tools or a special-attack weapon the team has planned around | Bringing the item but lacking its required supplies or assigned purpose |
Keep the inventory predictable. For example, arrange the weapon, body and legs of each combat style in consistent columns, and keep food and Prayer restoration in the same places every run. Practise switching while looking at the encounter rather than dragging every item into a new layout mid-fight.
At the bank, equip every planned switch once. Check the equipment screen for the resulting accuracy and verify that the selected combat style is correct. A charged staff worn with heavy melee armour, a crossbow without usable bolts or a weapon left on an unsuitable attack style can turn an apparently complete setup into a damage problem.
Give every inventory slot a job
Count the switch items, utility, healing, Prayer restoration, boosts and escape separately. If optional switches occupy half the backpack, remove the least useful ones until the first session has a workable supply reserve. Do not use a speed-run inventory as a minimum learner inventory.
Understand the restoration order. Saradomin brews heal while draining offensive stats, so a brew-heavy setup also needs a way to repair those stats and reapply boosts. Raid-specific potions can change that sequence, but only while their effects are actually active. Check the buff rather than assuming it persists through a death or a long pause.
Plan the spellbook before withdrawing runes. Ancient blood spells, Arceuus utility and Lunar utility are not all available at once simply because the rune pouch has space. Check the exact spell, the selected book and the pouch contents. Tools such as a pickaxe also need a deliberate slot or a verified storage arrangement inside the relevant raid.
Know what the raid supplies for you
In CoX, teams gather resources and can prepare raid potions. Agree who can make the required tiers and whether the group will prepare before Olm. Useful targets include 78 Herblore for strong aid, revitalisation and prayer-enhance potions; making strong overloads yourself needs 90 Herblore. A learner does not need every supporting skill if the team has explicitly covered those jobs.
ToA offers a Helpful Spirit after two paths and again after all four. You still need enough supplies for the opening paths, and supply-reduction invocations change what the spirit offers. Learn the difference between offensive smelling salts and emergency healing such as ambrosia before deciding that any bundle will do.
ToB Entry provides bandages at particular supply points and after deaths. Those learning supplies do not reproduce normal Theatre’s resource system. Avoid building a normal-mode plan around mechanics that only Entry provides.
Make the travel and team plan before the session
Visit the entrance in advance if it is unfamiliar. For CoX, reaching the mountain and speaking to the Mountain Guide opens a useful repeat route; the later Xeric’s Honour talisman teleport requires its own unlock. For ToA, confirm access to the necropolis and the pyramid after the quest. Bank unnecessary journey items before starting the actual attempt.
Tell the group that it is your first run, show the actual setup and ask for a specific learner role. Useful questions include who leads the room, who prepares potions, which Olm hand you attack and what a stop call means. Agree valuable-drop arrangements before the first encounter.
Set aside enough uninterrupted time for explanations and retries. A learning session can take much longer than an experienced clear. Check connection quality, close distracting interfaces and avoid beginning a long raid when you already know you must leave halfway through.
Account rules and death are part of preparation
Activity | Death distinction to understand |
|---|---|
Chambers of Xeric | Safe for ordinary items and regular HCIM status; dangerous for Hardcore Group Ironman lives. Death loses raid-only carried supplies and points. |
Tombs of Amascut | All deaths risk HCIM status, including Entry Mode. Wipes, limited attempts and disconnects can create item-retrieval consequences. |
Theatre Entry Mode | Unlimited attempts do not make it safe for HCIM status. It is a learning mode with reduced rewards and no normal unique-reward chance. |
Raids are exceptions to ordinary Ironman assisted-loot rules: an Ironman can participate in a raid team with other players. That does not erase the account’s supply restrictions or any Group Ironman prestige considerations. Check those before joining outsiders. Ultimate Ironmen must also plan around their particular item storage and deathbank situation.
For ToA, read the active attempt invocations and know how to leave deliberately. Logging out in an unsafe room is not a free bank teleport. If items enter an item-retrieval service, recover them before risking another dangerous death. Keep an available escape where the encounter permits it; do not assume every raid arena lets you teleport out.
Practise the skills that actually transfer
Use your keybinds to reach prayers, inventory and spells without hunting for the tabs.
Practise a small gear switch, select the correct target and confirm that the new style is attacking.
Move away from a marked hazard, then resume attacking instead of clicking through it.
Heal and restore Prayer while maintaining awareness of the next mechanic.
After a mistake, stabilise health and position before trying to recover lost damage.
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to find practice encounters for a missing skill. Readiness means you can explain the supplies, escape limits and first few actions of the chosen raid. After the first session, improve the specific problem you observed rather than replacing the entire setup at once.
