Vasa is a two-style encounter: use ranged while the boss moves, then switch promptly to a stab weapon for the active glowing crystal. Breaking that crystal in time cancels the healing he has stored. The opening teleport can leave you extremely low, so stabilising your health comes before chasing damage.

This guide covers normal Chambers of Xeric for a small learner team. It separates the teleport, moving-boss and crystal jobs, without requiring self-damage setups or Vengeance tricks. Vasa’s crystals are the main preparation check; a good ranged weapon alone does not solve the room.

Prepare the crystal weapon before the raid starts

Bring a usable ranged setup for Vasa and a melee weapon with a stab option for the crystals. A dragon sword or Zamorakian hasta can cover the latter job; stronger alternatives are upgrades, not permission to forget the actual style. Check attack, equip and ammunition requirements on the gear you intend to use.

Crystals are immune to ranged, heavily reduce magic damage and resist slash and crush. If your main melee weapon lacks a useful stab attack, plan the extra switch before entry. A whip left equipped at a crystal is a different problem from low melee levels.

Put the ranged weapon and stab weapon in adjacent, predictable inventory slots. Include a defender or other intended off-hand in the switch when needed. If the weapon offers multiple styles, verify stab rather than relying on what it used during an earlier room.

Keep healing and Prayer restoration easy to reach after the teleport. Do not use your final food slot for a minor armour upgrade if it leaves no practical recovery from a low-health opening. For Ironmen, choose the best coherent setup you actually own instead of treating a tradeable upgrade as a required purchase.

Target or cue

Action

Purpose

Vasa moving between crystals

Ranged damage with Protect from Missiles and movement

Avoid close-range stomps while dealing damage

An active glowing crystal

Switch to melee and select stab

Break the target that can release stored healing

Vasa becomes untargetable while siphoning

Stop clicking the boss; attack the active crystal

Use the damage window on the correct target

Opening teleport finishes

Heal promptly and select the next prayer

Avoid a follow-up boulder killing a low-health player

Agree the teleport plan before approaching

Vasa begins as a pile of rocks. Approaching starts the encounter and raises a damaging barrier at the entrance. Gather the team before the trigger; standing immediately outside the fire is not a reliable way to avoid the teleport.

The opening separates players between the boss and the arena edges. Players brought next to Vasa are stunned and cannot activate prayers during the charge. Players placed away from him can run next to him with Protect from Magic to share the blast and reduce the damage on the stunned group.

For a learner team, make the support responsibility explicit before someone wakes him. The people who can move must identify themselves, select Magic protection and reach the sharing position while the charge is occurring. Do not wait for the stunned player to describe the whole situation after the blast lands.

In a solo, the opening blast leaves very little health. Self-damaging to manipulate the opening is an optimisation with its own preparation and timing; this guide does not require it. Keep healing ready and recover as soon as control returns. A low blast number does not make it safe to take the next boulder unhealed.

Moving phase: range the boss and dodge the landing area

After the blast, select Protect from Missiles and attack Vasa with ranged. His boulders target where players were standing when the attack began and cover a three-by-three area. Move clear of the impact rather than using protection as permission to stay in every marked landing.

Avoid running underneath him. His moving footprint can deal rapid stomp damage, and a straight click towards the next crystal can accidentally cross it. Route around his body while keeping the active corner in view.

The boss’s next crystal indicates where the team will need to be. Move early enough that you can make a clean weapon switch when the crystal becomes attackable. Standing at maximum distance on the wrong side of the room can turn a workable stab weapon into several seconds of no crystal damage.

Keep attacking Vasa when the route permits, but do not trade your health reserve for one final ranged shot before a switch. The aim is to arrive ready, with a clear path and usable stats, rather than reach the corner while still searching for the melee weapon.

Crystal phase: cancel the stored healing

Once Vasa reaches the selected crystal, he cannot be damaged while siphoning it. Click the active glowing crystal, equip your melee switch and attack on stab. Confirm the target changed: repeatedly clicking the boss beside it wastes the window even if the equipment is correct.

The charging hitsplats represent healing being stored, not an unavoidable permanent refill on every tick. If the crystal is destroyed in time, that healing is discarded. If he completes the siphon, the stored amount becomes real healing. This distinction is why a quick switch has value beyond simply moving the fight forward.

Focus the same active crystal as your teammates. Do not split onto the inactive corners or stay on ranged because you saw someone else draw a melee weapon. Use an available appropriate damage special only after the team’s target and style are correct; the core solution is sustained crystal damage.

Success sends Vasa back towards the centre and onward to another crystal. A completed siphon leads to another teleport attack. There is a shared timing pressure across crystal activity, so do not assume every later crystal gives you a fresh, equally comfortable window. Fast recognition and positioning matter even after the first successful break.

If the crystal survives: recover the next cycle

A failed crystal does not mean you should stop responding to the fight. Re-equip ranged, watch Vasa return and prepare for the next teleport. Heal before you are locked into a vulnerable moment and ensure the mobile players remember their sharing job.

Separate damage problems from lost-time problems. If you spent most of the window running from the far side, another melee upgrade may not be the first fix. If you arrived immediately but used slash, correcting the style is more important. If the switch and timing were clean, then levels, boosts and weapon quality become useful review points.

The crystal has its own combat interaction; do not spend the whole cycle following a damage-reduction strategy for Vasa while ignoring it. An armour change that improves the moving boss slightly can be a poor trade if it removes the stab weapon or makes the switch too awkward to execute.

Vasa is not undead. A Salve amulet brought for another CoX room is not a special solution here. Likewise, a ranged upgrade should be assessed as part of the complete inventory, with its ammunition, charges and the retained crystal switch.

What went wrong

Check first

Death immediately after the opener

Healing ready when control returns, then Missiles protection

Large blast on one teammate

Did mobile players reach the sharing position with Magic protection?

Crystal barely damaged

Correct active target, stab style and complete melee switch

Boss appears to heal repeatedly

Was the crystal actually broken before the siphon completed?

Getting crushed on the route

Avoid the boss’s footprint and choose an outside path

Later crystals feel rushed

Move and switch earlier; do not assume a fresh timer per corner

After the kill: keep the learning record useful

Pick up the actual raid supplies and restore before continuing. Vasa guarantees an overload (+), which can help the remaining raid plan; check who has the dose rather than assuming it is in shared storage already.

CoX preserves regular Hardcore Ironman status on death, while Hardcore Group Ironman deaths consume a life. Point and supply losses still matter. For the next attempt, record one concrete failure: opener support, recovery, a boulder path, arrival timing or the crystal style. That produces a useful practice goal instead of labelling the room an unexplained gear check.
