For a learner Muttadile room, plan to chop the meat tree and keep the large Muttadile outside melee distance. Protect from Missiles at range, switch to Melee protection if the small one reaches you, and preserve health for overlapping damage. The dangerous part is reacting to where the creatures actually move, not where you expected them to stay.
This guide covers normal Chambers of Xeric in small teams. It uses the tree-chopping route as the default and explains freezing as an optional alternative. Challenge Mode scaling, advanced safespot routes and no-prep speed targets are separate assumptions.
Choose the tree plan before starting damage
Two Muttadiles share the chamber: the small one is on land and the large one begins submerged. A meat tree provides their healing route, and a bronze axe spawns in the room. Killing the small one brings the large one onto land, but the submerged parent can already attack before that transition.
Both creatures try to reach the tree around half health. Chopping it down removes that healing option for both. For learners, completing the tree job early is easier to coordinate than discovering at the threshold that nobody brought an axe or knows who should use the binding special.
Assign a chopper, or agree that several people will help. Woodcutting level affects chopping performance; the axe’s tier does not improve damage against this special tree. Use the provided bronze axe if needed rather than sacrificing a useful inventory slot solely for a higher-tier axe.
A team using a freeze method needs to assign the player, the weapon or spell, the timing and the fallback if it fails. “We will skip tree” is not a complete plan when the relevant player has no special energy or is on a different spellbook.
Job | Learner approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Prevent healing | Chop the meat tree | Axe available and a named chopper |
Small Muttadile | Damage at range when possible | Change to Melee protection if it reaches you |
Submerged large Muttadile | Account for incoming magic | Stay healthy even before the small one dies |
Large Muttadile on land | Keep out of melee and stomp range | Follow its real position, not a remembered safespot |
Optional bind | Assigned freeze with a fallback | Spellbook, runes or special energy and successful contact |
Build for survival as well as damage
Bring a working ranged setup and consider ranged and magic defence in the equipment you will actually wear. A weapon recommendation assumes its ammunition, charges and supporting armour are present. Bowfa without its intended crystal setup is not the same loadout as a fully supported Bowfa example.
Keep healing and restoration visible. These enemies can combine hard hits, and an overhead does not cancel every attack in the room. Entering on low health because the previous room looked finished creates an avoidable risk before you have even begun chopping.
Use offensive and defensive prayers that you actually have unlocked. Rigour or Augury can be useful where appropriate, but a scroll unlock is separate from reaching the Prayer level. The learner plan should still explain the movement and tree jobs when those upgrades are unavailable.
Do not reduce the health reserve to copy a no-prep inventory before you know your own damage intake. The room may supply useful potions after the kills, but those drops cannot heal you before the creature that drops them has died.
Small Muttadile: respond to distance, not a fixed script
At a distance, the small Muttadile uses ranged attacks. Use Protect from Missiles and a practical ranged or magic damage setup. If it walks into melee distance, switch to Protect from Melee promptly; continuing to pray ranged just because you are holding a bow can expose you to a heavy close hit.
Watch the monster’s position while chopping as well as while attacking. It can walk towards or away from players unpredictably. A tile that was outside melee range a moment ago is not guaranteed to remain so while you look at your inventory.
The larger creature in the water can send magic attacks into the room. That means a hit through the protection chosen for the small one is not automatically a failed prayer switch. Keep enough health to survive the overlapping threats, and do not stand still waiting to confirm every damage number before recovering.
Once the tree is gone, concentrate on finishing the small creature with fewer interruptions. If your team left the tree standing, expect it to move towards healing around half health; recognise that movement immediately and follow the agreed plan.
Chopping: finish the prevention job safely
Damage the meat tree with the axe and confirm it is actually felled before assuming healing is disabled. A few chopping animations do not prove the tree is gone. If someone must stop to heal or respond to a close Muttadile, another assigned teammate can continue.
You can alternate chopping with attacks when the creature is in a useful position, but the closer its health gets to the healing threshold, the more valuable finishing the tree becomes. Do not have every player abandon a nearly finished tree to chase a final burst of damage.
If the creature does reach the tree, keep the situation controlled. Review whether the job was unassigned, unfinished or interrupted by danger. A heal makes the encounter longer; running into a bad position to punish it can turn that delay into a death.
Higher Woodcutting can make this job smoother, but it is an account improvement rather than a universal raid-access gate. The same principle applies to combat levels: improve a recurring bottleneck after identifying it rather than treating an arbitrary recommended level as the only possible entry point.
Large Muttadile: avoid the stomp before chasing a kill
The large Muttadile can attack as it emerges after the smaller one dies. Recover health and establish distance during the transition rather than standing next to the pool while sorting loot. It uses all three combat styles once on land.
Its close-range stomp is especially dangerous and can hit harder than an ordinary melee attack. Keep out of melee distance and react when the creature walks towards you. Protect from Melee is an emergency response to close range, not a reason to intentionally tank the stomp.
At range, Protect from Missiles is a useful default because its ranged attacks are particularly threatening. The large creature stays with a ranged or magic style for at least three ordinary attacks before it can switch, excluding melee attacks; it is not obliged to switch on the fourth. Do not count three and blindly select the other prayer.
Room obstacles can be used to restrict its movement, but the workable position depends on the layout and the creature’s approach. Confirm the actual path before calling a tile safe. A screenshot of one layout does not prove that standing in the same-looking corner of another room prevents melee.
Freezing is an alternative with a real fallback
A successful bind can stop a Muttadile reaching the tree and let the team continue damaging it. A Zamorak godsword special is a common tool; the special still has to land. Ice spells need the correct spellbook, runes and a successful cast, and the large creature is harder to catch than the small one.
Current mechanics allow damage while a creature is frozen on its way to eat. Older advice that all such damage is automatically nullified is outdated. That does not mean any freeze at any health guarantees the whole room will work: duration, timing, accuracy and the team’s damage still matter.
If a bind fails, say so immediately. Chop if that is the fallback, or accept and manage the healing while stabilising the fight. Do not have the team continue as if an unseen freeze succeeded while the creature is already eating.
Learners do not need this optimisation to complete normal CoX. Practise the reliable tree route first, then use the bind method when it addresses an understood time or supply bottleneck.
Problem | Practical correction |
|---|---|
Taking close hits while chopping | Watch the small creature and change protection for its current distance |
Large stomp after the transition | Move away from the pool and maintain real melee distance |
Healing despite a tree plan | Confirm the tree was fully felled, not merely damaged |
Freeze plan fails silently | Call the miss and use the agreed fallback |
Three attacks counted, then wrong prayer | Three is a minimum before a possible switch, not a forced alternation |
Supplies vanish before the drops | Enter healthy and prioritise survival over an oversized armour switch |
After the room: distribute drops before continuing
Pick up the actual overload and recovery supplies and check the team’s remaining reserve. Restore drained stats and Prayer before the next room or Olm preparation. The useful measure of improvement is fewer avoidable close hits and a controlled healing plan, not simply whether the room eventually ended.
Regular Hardcore Ironmen keep status on CoX deaths, but Hardcore Group Ironmen lose a life. Points and raid supplies are still affected by dying. Keep this distinction explicit when choosing practice methods or copying a route that expects repeated deaths.
Fit this encounter into the complete raid
Use the Chambers of Xeric learner guide for the complete raid, preparation and team expectations. The raids preparation guide helps separate useful upgrades from access requirements.
