For a first Dagannoth Rex trip, the hardest part can be reaching the eastern wall without bringing the other two Kings into the fight. Prepare the dungeon route and entry retreat before you worry about a long ring grind. Once Rex is trapped correctly, Magic can defeat him while you manage damage from the surrounding Spinolyps.
This is a Rex-only learner guide. It does not assume that you can kill Prime and Supreme, own a second account for entry or sustain an advanced three-King rotation. A safespot for Rex does not make the whole room harmless.
Understand the three Kings before entering
Enemy | Attack to recognise | What changes for a Rex learner |
|---|---|---|
Dagannoth Rex | Melee. | Trap his path against the eastern terrain and attack with Magic. |
Dagannoth Prime | Magic. | His attacks remain a serious threat if you draw his attention. |
Dagannoth Supreme | Ranged. | Do not mistake him for another melee target while moving around the room. |
Spinolyps around the water | Persistent ranged-based attacks, including their unusual Magic attack. | Useful Ranged defence and poison management help sustain the trip. |
You are trying to isolate one fight, not prove that you can survive all the attacks at once. A poor entry can consume most of the food before Rex is positioned. If that happens, reset your approach rather than calling the remaining inventory enough for a long trip.
Prepare the Waterbirth route
Travel to Waterbirth Island using a route your account has unlocked, such as the boat from Rellekka or an appropriate teleport. The ordinary dungeon route includes pressure-pad doors, door supports and several levels with different monsters. Bring a pet rock and a rune thrownaxe if you are using the standard solo route through those obstacles.
At the paired pressure pads, the pet rock substitutes for a second player. At the door supports, the thrownaxe special attack can bounce across the supports when aimed at the middle support from the appropriate side path. Retain enough special-attack energy for this utility action. Bringing the item but spending its special energy earlier can still stop the route.
The 85 Agility shortcut bypasses the pet-rock and thrownaxe section; a suitable visible boost can meet that requirement. Another internal shortcut has a different level requirement. Do not interpret one shortcut's existence as permission to skip the tools when your planned route still crosses the doors.
Before leaving | Practical check | If the check fails |
|---|---|---|
Route tools | Pet rock and rune thrownaxe, or the actual shortcut requirement met. | Return for the tools; do not assume a stranger will open the route. |
Sustained spell | Enough charges or runes for the whole planned trip. | Choose a shorter trial instead of depending on a drop. |
Protection | All three overheads available for the route and entry. | Continue account preparation before an unfamiliar descent. |
Recovery | Poison solution, food, Prayer restoration and exit. | Reduce optional switches to make room. |
Use the dungeon map and ladder names to keep the route oriented. Check the monsters present after each transition and match protection to them. Wallasalkis use Magic, and different dagannoth sections can require different overheads. Leaving one prayer active through the entire journey is not a substitute for reading the room.
For your first visit, treat getting to the final ladder as a checkpoint. Stop, restore and inspect the inventory. If the journey used too many supplies, a deliberate return is better than entering an unfamiliar multi-boss room already depleted.
Choose a sustainable Magic setup
Rex has high melee and Ranged defence but low Magic defence, and currently has a 35% Earth weakness. Earth spells are a practical option when you can cast and supply them. Iban Blast and supported powered staves are other routes; their requirements, charge systems and elemental interactions differ.
For example, Iban's staff needs 50 Attack to wield and Iban Blast needs 50 Magic, alongside its quest, rune and charge preparation. A trident is a later equipment route, not a requirement for every first ring attempt. Pick one weapon you can maintain rather than assuming that a guide's finished-account setup is the minimum.
Ranged defence is valuable against Spinolyps. Practical defensive body and leg pieces can be useful even when they carry negative Magic accuracy, because Rex himself is comparatively easy to hit. Check the complete setup instead of adding every heavy piece without considering spell accuracy or the weapon's requirements.
Blood spells can support healing if you have the required spellbook, levels and runes. They are an optional sustain method, not something to assume every early account already owns. Additional weapon switches should earn the inventory space they take away from food and restoration.
For a trial trip, allocate the inventory around entry tools, spell supplies, an exit, poison protection, several Prayer-restoration doses and healing. Leave room for rewards. A layout that can fight Rex for a long time but cannot survive the approach is incomplete.
Enter the lair with a retreat plan
The final ladder has a peek option to check occupancy. A nearby root offers a place to inspect and find another world before entering the arena. Use this before committing to the room; finding an occupied world after drawing aggression is a more expensive problem.
Turn auto-retaliate off so an unwanted target does not pull you toward the middle. Restore health and Prayer, keep the escape easy to reach and identify the ladder you would use to retreat. Prime's Magic attacks are a priority to protect against when inspecting the entry.
Descend only when prepared to read the positions of Prime and Supreme. If the entry draws dangerous attention, return up the ladder and reassess. Do not repeatedly burn the whole inventory trying the same rushed movement. A better-timed attempt or another suitable world can be the next step.
When the room allows it, travel around the southern perimeter toward the east rather than cutting across the centre. Keep checking whether a King is attacking you. Standing on a planned destination is not proof that the entry succeeded if Prime or Supreme still has a clear attack on you.
This learner route does not depend on closing the game client while under attack. A forced logout delay leaves your character exposed and is a poor first solution when you have not established which attacks are reaching you. Use a controlled retreat when the setup is wrong.
Lure Rex and verify the safespot
From the eastern side, attract Rex with a Magic attack while staying clear of the other Kings' aggression. Use Protect from Melee while he approaches. Move along the eastern wall so the terrain blocks his route, then confirm that he stops short while your spell continues to reach him.
The shared-arena picture identifies the encounter, not a marked safe tile. Watch Rex's movement and your own position. If he can walk around the obstacle and hit you, restore melee protection, repair the lure and verify it again. Do not turn protection off merely because you recognise the corner from an image.
Once the path is stable, continue the kill and track the damage coming from outside the trap. Spinolyps remain active. If an attack is much larger than the normal chip damage you expected, recheck the Kings instead of assuming you simply need better armour.
Before approaching loot, inspect the room. Clicking an item outside your current position can move you away from the terrain that made the setup work. Loot deliberately and return to the verified spot before the next Rex cycle. An uncollected ordinary drop is less costly than a preventable death while chasing it.
Repeat kills without losing the setup
Confirm the eastern position still isolates Rex from the other Kings.
Check poison protection, health, Prayer reserve and spell supply.
Attract and trap Rex, using melee protection until his path is blocked.
Attack while maintaining awareness of the whole room.
After the kill, collect chosen rewards without wandering into another King's reach.
Rebuild the same position and decide whether the next cycle fits the remaining supplies.
Do useful preparation during the gap, but keep the boss area visible. Rearranging a few slots or restoring health is helpful; forgetting the next spawn while sorting every item is not. Keep the emergency teleport in the same place throughout the trip.
If another player enters or changes the room's activity, reassess. Prime's attacks and the movement of other Kings can spoil a previously controlled situation. A Rex-only plan should not silently turn into a three-King encounter because you are reluctant to leave a productive world.
Rings, axe and the length of a grind
Rex can drop the Berserker ring, Warrior ring and dragon axe. Each of those listed items has its own 1-in-128 base chance per kill. This does not mean that 128 kills guarantee the item you want, or that receiving one item makes the next kill more likely to supply another.
For context, the probability of seeing at least one specified 1-in-128 item after 128 independent attempts is about 63%, calculated as one minus (127/128) to the power of 128. Plan a method you can repeat beyond the nominal rate instead of treating that rate as a deadline.
The elite Fremennik Diary notes the Kings' bones. It is a repeat-trip convenience rather than the entry requirement for your first Rex attempt. With limited inventory space, choose loot priorities before the run; do not accidentally displace the last supplies needed to leave safely.
Main, Ironman and Hardcore differences
A main can compare buying a ring with learning the encounter. An Ironman may value the same kill for an equipment unlock that cannot simply be purchased. Group Ironmen should coordinate loot eligibility within their group; unrelated players damaging Rex can change whether an Ironman receives the ordinary reward.
The Kings are unsafe for HCIM status and HCGIM lives. A successfully trapped Rex does not remove the risk from the dungeon, the entry, Spinolyps or another King. UIMs also need a deliberate inventory and recovery plan under their own rules, especially if items already sit in a retrieval service elsewhere.
After the first trip, identify whether the limiting factor was travel, entry, the lure, poison, food or charges. Improve that section before extending the stay. Use the Magic training guide for spell preparation and the Barrows guide if defensive equipment is your next account project.
