For a first Barrows chest, build the run around three checkpoints: defeat all six brothers, reach the central chest with supplies left, then loot and teleport out. Use the correct protection prayer for each brother and watch your remaining Prayer underground. Barrows rewards controlled preparation more than an expensive equipment list.
This OSRS Barrows guide takes you from access and a budget setup to your first complete run. It also explains Wind spells, tunnel puzzles and the difference between reward potential and the chance of receiving Barrows equipment. The core route suits mains and Ironmen; account restrictions and Hardcore risks are covered below.
Access, travel and a sensible starting point
Barrows is members' content east of Mort'ton in Morytania. Complete Priest in Peril and speak to the Strange Old Man at the mounds to start His Faithful Servants before digging into the crypts. Bring a spade. Starting the miniquest and completing it are different milestones: you finish it after obtaining its icon from a successful run.
For a learner, 43 Prayer and roughly 50 or better in your relevant combat skills make a useful preparation target. Those are recommendations, not universal entry requirements. Your weapon, available spells, Hitpoints and familiarity matter. Unlocking all protection prayers helps, but you must also restore Prayer when the crypts drain it.
Travel option | What you need | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
Barrows teleport tablet | The tablet and the destination's quest access. | A direct arrival without needing 83 Magic or the Arceuus spellbook to use the tablet. |
Barrows Teleport spell | 83 Magic, Arceuus access, runes and the required Morytania access. | An established account with the spell available; separate its casting requirements from tablet use. |
Shades of Mort'ton minigame teleport | Shades of Mort'ton completed; an available minigame teleport. | A free arrival at Mort'ton followed by the walk east. Its cooldown makes it less convenient for repeated trips. |
Morytania legs 3 or 4 | The appropriate diary reward. | Teleport to Burgh de Rott, then travel north through Mort'ton. |
Choose the return journey before leaving the bank. A ring of dueling gives a practical route to Ferox Enclave for banking and restoration. Keep a usable escape available during the run. A teleport that takes you to Barrows is not your exit from the chest room.
Budget gear: choose your spell before your armour
All six brothers have a 50% elemental weakness to air. Wind spells can therefore be a useful low-cost route, including against Ahrim. This bonus applies to the appropriate elemental spells; equipping an air staff does not turn a powered staff's built-in attack into a Wind spell.
Pick one primary Magic route and check its actual costs. A simple staff of air supplies air runes for a Wind spell, leaving its other rune requirement to bring. Set the intended autocast before entering, then check it again after weapon switches. Repeated melee swings with the wrong staff style are a setup problem, not evidence that Magic is ineffective.
Primary route | Preparation | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Wind spells | Use an unlocked spell, a compatible staff and its runes. Wind Bolt starts at 17 Magic; Wind Blast starts at 41. | Benefits from air weakness. A spell being available at a low level does not make that level a comfortable first-run target. |
Iban Blast | 50 Magic, 50 Attack to wield Iban's staff, Underground Pass, runes and staff charges. | A familiar early option. Maintain its charges and compare it with the Wind spell your level actually supports. |
Powered staff | A staff you can equip and enough of its correct charges. | Convenient repeated attacks. It does not automatically receive the brothers' air weakness bonus. |
For a straightforward learning setup, wear suitable Magic equipment, a useful amulet and boots you already own. Add a ranged weapon and compatible ammunition if you want a separate Ahrim method. A magic shortbow with arrows is one modest option at 50 Ranged. Wind users can instead keep the same primary style and reduce switches.
A melee weapon helps kill ordinary tunnel monsters without spending your main spell supplies. Optional damage upgrades come later. If equipping Ghommal's hilt 2 or higher, your main weapon must leave the off-hand slot available. A two-handed switch removes the hilt, so check what is equipped before relying on its protection from the area drain.
Pack the spade, an entry route, an exit, your spell supplies or charges, several Prayer potions, food and any planned switches. Fill the remaining space around those essentials. For a first attempt, bring enough supplies for one deliberate chest and bank afterward; a multi-chest trip can wait until you know your consumption. Leave space for loot rather than arriving at the chest with a full inventory of equipment you never used.
Prayer drain: the mechanic that changes the whole trip
Underground, the area's drain activates about every 18 seconds. It starts at eight Prayer points and increases by one per brother killed, reaching fourteen after all six. This is additional to the ordinary drain from active prayers. A prayer bonus helps normal prayer duration but does not remove this environmental effect.
Ghommal's hilt 2 or higher prevents the Barrows area drain while equipped. Claiming the medium Combat Achievement reward and carrying the hilt in your inventory are not the same as wielding it. The hilt also does not make active prayers free: protection and offensive prayers still consume Prayer normally.
Without the hilt, treat the Prayer display as part of the fight. Restore before you reach zero, especially before opening a dangerous brother's sarcophagus or another tunnel door. Refill and organise supplies above ground when possible, then spend less time underground deciding what to do next. Do not copy a zero-Prayer achievement run as a beginner strategy.
Find each mound and use the right protection
Face your compass north to identify the six mounds. The table below lists their positions; the centre belongs to Ahrim. Check the brother's name before opening the sarcophagus, activate protection and begin your intended attack.
Brother and mound | Protection prayer | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
Dharok — north-east | Protect from Melee | His damage becomes more dangerous as his health falls. Keep protection available through the end of the fight. |
Ahrim — centre | Protect from Magic | Ranged is an alternative to Wind spells. Protection does not prevent all of his stat reductions. |
Karil — south | Protect from Missiles | He attacks with Ranged. Seeing leather armour is not a reason to use Protect from Magic. |
Verac — north-west | Protect from Melee | His special effect can penetrate prayer. Keep food available; protection still reduces the overall danger. |
Guthan — south-east | Protect from Melee | Successful damaging attacks can heal him. Preventing those hits also limits his healing. |
Torag — south-west | Protect from Melee | Maintain the same preparation checks even if this fight feels easier than Dharok. |
For a first trip, try Dharok → Ahrim → Karil → Verac → Guthan → Torag. This prioritises several dangerous encounters while your supplies are fresh. It is a learning order, not a claim of the shortest route. Restore as needed instead of assuming your starting Prayer must last through every mound.
One sarcophagus leads to the tunnels instead of an immediate fight. Record that brother, return upstairs and finish the other mounds. Leave that tunnel until your surface checks are complete. The missing brother must still be defeated before looting if you want the full six-brother reward attempt.
Your first chest: a complete run in six steps
Arrive ready. Confirm spade, spell, supplies and exit. Start the miniquest if this is your first visit.
Clear the surface fights. Follow your chosen order, using the right protection. Note the tunnel mound and return to it after the other five brothers are defeated.
Enter with a reserve. Heal and restore before descending. Identify the remaining brother and the prayer you will need if he appears at a door.
Navigate toward the centre. Follow doors that can be opened. Watch for the missing brother, and handle any spawn before concentrating on a puzzle.
Finish the reward checks. Defeat the sixth brother, confirm the kill checklist and add only the tunnel monsters needed for your chosen reward target.
Loot and leave. Open and search the chest as required, collect the rewards and teleport out. Restock before deciding to repeat.
If the sixth brother has not appeared while navigating, opening the chest can bring him into the room. Fight him before taking the loot. Do not let reaching the chest make you skip the final combat check.
Leaving early is an acceptable outcome when your reserve is running low. Progress before looting can be resumed; do not turn a recoverable attempt into a death simply to avoid another journey. Once the chest is looted, leave promptly: the tunnels begin collapsing and can damage you.
Tunnel doors and puzzles without guesswork
The tunnel entrance and available route change between runs. Work from the doors available on your current attempt rather than memorising a fixed sequence of clicks. The central room is your destination, but the nearest-looking door may be locked.
A normal route into the chest room includes a pattern puzzle. Read the sequence, identify what changes and choose the matching next shape. The answer's position can vary, so memorising “left” or “right” is unreliable. An incorrect answer rearranges the route, creating more underground travel and supply use.
Before attempting a puzzle, deal with anything attacking you and check your health. Zoom and camera placement should let you see the doorway and your character. Repeatedly clicking a door while a brother is attacking is an attention problem that more expensive armour will not solve.
A strange old lockpick offers another route by opening otherwise inaccessible Barrows doors. A fresh one has 50 charges; using it on locked doors consumes charges. It is optional, and a main can buy one while an Ironman needs an eligible acquisition route. Even with a lockpick, you still need to check brothers killed and reward potential before looting.
Reward potential and Barrows equipment are different checks
Kill all six brothers for the ordinary full run. This improves your equipment reward rolls and makes every brother's equipment eligible. Extra rats, spiders and skeletons affect the ordinary loot calculation; they do not independently raise the chance of a Barrows equipment piece.
With all six defeated, the chance of at least one Barrows equipment item is approximately one in fifteen chests. That is a probability, not a guaranteed item every fifteenth chest. Multiple pieces in one chest are possible, and dry runs can be much longer.
Your goal | Practical target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
A full equipment attempt | Defeat all six brothers before looting. | Tunnel-monster kills cannot replace a missing brother. |
Rune-focused ordinary loot | Stay below 881 reward-potential points. Six brothers, two skeletons and one bloodworm give 874. | 874 points display at about 86.36%; bolt racks become eligible at 881. |
A bolt-rack collection-log entry | Reach at least 881 points. | The rune-focused target deliberately excludes that reward. |
More runes from repeat runs | Complete and claim the hard Morytania Diary rewards. | The reward increases rune quantities by 50%, rather than increasing Barrows equipment odds. |
The 874-point example assumes no other tunnel kills. If you killed extra monsters while navigating, read the current counter and adjust. Do not add a memorised set of monsters to every run regardless of your existing progress. Chasing 100% automatically can add time and a reward type you were trying to avoid.
Keep loot space available, especially on your first miniquest run. The strange icon requires room in your inventory; it is not safely delivered to the floor if there is no space. After obtaining it, return to the Strange Old Man to finish His Faithful Servants, then study the crypt map reward to reveal the underground minimap permanently.
What changes for Ironman and restricted accounts?
Account | Plan around |
|---|---|
Main | Buy a short learning supply first. Compare recurring rune, teleport and potion costs before purchasing damage upgrades. |
Ironman / Group Ironman | Prepare a sustainable spell and transport route. Barrows remains an individual run; GIM does not turn the six brothers into a shared raid encounter. |
HCIM / HCGIM | Deaths here are unsafe for Hardcore status or shared lives. Leave conservatively and prepare for an unexpected tunnel brother. |
UIM | Make room for supplies and rewards before entering. Ordinary bank restocking and gravestone recovery instructions do not describe your account's storage rules. |
Barrows is dangerous PvM. Review Items Kept on Death with your actual equipment and plan how to return if necessary. UIMs should resolve deathpile and existing item-retrieval storage risks before learning; ordinary accounts should keep recovery supplies available. An accessible recovery route does not restore a lost Hardcore life.
After the first chest: improve one bottleneck
Record how much food, Prayer restoration and ammunition or runes the run consumed. Identify whether the main delay was a slow brother, a missing autocast, tunnel navigation or repeated banking. Improve that specific part before copying an advanced multi-chest setup.
Budget around several runs rather than one lucky equipment drop. For a main, net return is the value actually sold minus supplies and other costs. For an Ironman, useful runes and equipment have progression value even when there is no sale. Neither account type benefits from treating a fixed GP-per-hour estimate as a guarantee.
Useful next projects include the medium Combat Achievement reward for the hilt, the hard Morytania Diary for runes and a better repeatable travel loop. Keep these as upgrades to an already understood run. You do not need to complete every convenience unlock before your first chest.
If protection and inventory management still feel rushed, revisit the combat levels-versus-gear guide. For an Ahrim ranged switch, the Ranged training guide can help with preparation. Your next milestone is a repeatable chest with a supply reserve, followed by a deliberate move toward longer encounters such as the Fight Caves.
