Ranged training can be inexpensive and steady or extremely fast and costly. The best choice depends on whether you want low interaction, immediate levels, Slayer progress or a specific combat unlock. Start with a complete working setup and test it before committing to a large ammunition purchase.

This OSRS 1–99 Ranged guide compares quest starts, Gemstone Crab, cannoning, chinning and other practical routes. It separates ordinary solo training from heavily optimised setups using extra accounts, advanced gear and high-level prayers.

Point spending competes with buying Void equipment

A straightforward route is to use useful quest rewards, train with an affordable fast weapon, unlock ammunition recovery and then decide whether to pay for concentrated experience. There is no requirement to chin as soon as the first chinchompa becomes available.

Early experience: quests before unnecessary grinding

Putting Shadow of the Storm's chosen combat reward into Ranged, then completing Death to the Dorgeshuun and Horror from the Deep, provides 16,662.5 combined Ranged experience. That reaches level 32 from level 1.

The quests have prerequisites and combat, so prepare the account before treating them as a fixed opening sequence. Their unlocks can be valuable beyond the experience reward. Recalculate your remaining target after each quest rather than buying ammunition against the original level.

If training directly, use a fast affordable weapon against low-defence targets. Upgrade ammunition and equipment when they improve damage at a sensible cost, but do not spend the entire budget on armour while leaving no money for arrows, darts, bolts, potions or transport.

Check attack style before the first kill

Rapid normally provides the fastest weapon attack speed and is the standard choice for Ranged experience. For chinchompas, the corresponding rapid style is called Medium fuse. Longrange or Long fuse also trains Defence, so restricted accounts should check the actual selected style after every weapon change.

Different weapons have different ammunition compatibility. Buying rune arrows does not make them usable in every bow, and a crossbow's bolt limit is separate from its own wield requirement. Check the ammunition item and weapon together.

Some weapons have other scaling rules. The eclipse atlatl, for example, uses Strength-related scaling, so a normal Ranged-armour recommendation cannot be applied without checking that setup. Choose a weapon based on its actual damage behaviour, not just its appearance.

Ava's devices and ammunition costs

Animal Magnetism unlocks Ava's ammunition-recovery devices. The attractor requires 30 Ranged, the accumulator 50 and the assembler 70 plus its additional Vorkath-head progression after Dragon Slayer II.

Recovery reduces consumption of eligible ammunition; it does not mean every fired projectile is returned. Metallic body armour can prevent the recovery effect. Check your equipment and a small ammunition test before leaving for a long session.

Chinchompas explode and cannot be recovered. Their supply cost therefore behaves differently from ordinary arrows or darts. Do not apply an assembler's recovery percentage when estimating how many chinchompas to buy.

Gemstone Crab: a practical low-interaction option

Players training combat together against the Gemstone Crab in the Tlati Rainforest

The Gemstone Crab in the Tlati Rainforest requires Children of the Sun for Varlamore access. It has effectively unlimited Hitpoints and no defence, remains in place for about ten minutes and then burrows to another location. The nearby cave network takes you to its current position, so world-hopping is not necessary to follow it.

Its experience is reduced by 12.5%: ordinary combat damage gives 3.5 experience per point instead of four. Despite that reduction, the lack of overkill and long periods of uninterrupted attacking can make it useful. At very low maximum hits, other crabs can remain competitive.

Use a fast affordable setup and keep ammunition available. Darts are a familiar budget option, while a suitable crossbow using ruby bolts (e) can be competitive at relevant middle levels because of the bolt effect. Compare your actual damage and consumption rather than assuming one weapon wins at every level.

Ranged strength matters against a zero-defence target; paying mainly for accuracy may give little benefit here. If using offensive prayers, budget restoration and pay attention to remaining points. Low interaction is not permission to ignore Hitpoints or supplies.

The crab does not count toward Slayer tasks, so a black mask or Slayer helmet does not provide its task bonus. A cannon cannot be placed nearby. It also deals small amounts of damage, so a character left with very low Hitpoints can still die.

Test a complete ten-minute cycle, including following the crab after it burrows. That gives a better comparison than recording only a short interval of uninterrupted attacks. Check that the chosen attack style still matches your experience goals.

Cannoning: fast early damage with an ammunition bill

Dwarf multicannon placement used to attack ogres near Castle Wars

Complete Dwarf Cannon before assembling and using your own multicannon. It has no Ranged-level requirement to set up, making it strong at early levels. Its regular steel cannonballs can hit up to 30 damage regardless of your Ranged level.

Cannon accuracy depends on your selected combat style and its relevant accuracy bonus. Do not assume equipping any expensive Ranged item automatically improves every cannon setup. Check your active style and equipment for the method you are using.

Ogres east of Castle Wars are a familiar option without an additional target-access quest. The Combat Training Camp ogres require Biohazard. Other locations may have dangerous monsters or special safespot requirements, so learn the exact spot before copying a high-level setup.

A cannon is also useful on suitable Slayer tasks, adding Ranged experience while you attack with another style. It cannot be placed everywhere. The Catacombs of Kourend and Gemstone Crab are examples where bringing the cannon does not create a legal setup.

Record cannonballs consumed, task time and loot. Decide whether the time saved is worth the continuing cost for your budget. An efficient method for a wealthy account is not a requirement to spend beyond what you can sustain.

Chinning: access and preparation matter more than the headline rate

Chinchompas are thrown explosive weapons that hit clustered targets. Regular chinchompas require 45 Ranged, red 55 and black 65. The most expensive type is not automatically the best value for your remaining level target.

Maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon require progress into Monkey Madness II that grants dungeon access. Prepare 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee, a light source, appropriate transport, restoration supplies and an emergency exit. Having a chinchompa stack does not grant the dungeon access by itself.

Skeletal monkeys in the earlier Ape Atoll Dungeon are an alternative with Monkey Madness I progress when the later dungeon is unavailable. They are undead, but salve benefits to a chinchompa attack are not a universal bonus to every secondary target. Do not transfer a simple single-target damage calculation onto the whole explosion.

Start with a limited training batch and learn the route with enough protection and supplies. At maniacal monkeys, keep Protect from Melee active, monitor Prayer and use the dropped one-dose potions as available. Drops can support long trips, but carry starting supplies instead of relying on the first kill to solve an empty Prayer bar.

Group targets before chasing maximum experience

Chinning depends on repeatedly hitting a large cluster. A higher-intensity solo method moves between attacks to keep monkeys grouped; a relaxed auto-retaliate method requires occasional regrouping. These do not produce identical rates.

Prioritise safe, consistent stacking before adding more actions. If targets spread out, each consumed chinchompa does less useful damage across the group. The cost per experience rises even if your attack speed remains unchanged.

Use Medium fuse for the rapid attack style and check position relative to the target. Chinchompa accuracy also depends on distance and fuse style; a weapon's displayed accuracy is not the whole calculation.

Many very high published rates assume high-level offensive prayers, strong damage equipment, divine ranging potions and two extra accounts grouping the monkeys. Those are setup-specific benchmarks, not the expectation for an ordinary first solo trip at 45 Ranged.

Void, elite Void and Ranged-strength armour can all be useful under the right conditions. The complete Void set and ranger helm are required for its set effect. Compare the full setup, access time and target defence rather than treating one individual piece as a working set.

Slayer, Nightmare Zone and reward-based alternatives

Ranging Slayer tasks can combine Ranged and Slayer progression. An imbued Slayer helmet or black mask provides its Ranged bonus on eligible assignments; the unimbued item does not provide the same Ranged benefit. Konar's location restriction and the target's actual defences still matter.

A toxic blowpipe requires darts and scales, while a venator bow has its own ammunition and charge costs. Multi-target benefits depend on targets being close enough and eligible for the effect. Do not compare their purchase price alone while ignoring a long session's running cost.

Nightmare Zone provides another controlled combat environment when your quest roster supports a suitable rumble. Choose appropriate bosses and prepare the selected potion strategy. Low-interaction training still needs periodic checks; monsters, absorption and ammunition do not maintain themselves indefinitely.

Pest Control combines combat with commendation points. Spending points on experience competes with saving them for Void equipment, so choose the immediate goal first. Boat access, combat performance and Combat Achievement benefits affect the result.

Compare equipment by the problem it solves

Problem

Check first

Do not assume

Frequent misses

Target defence, attack bonus and weapon suitability

More armour price always means more accuracy

Low damage against an easy target

Weapon speed, ammunition and Ranged-strength bonuses

Accuracy alone improves every zero-defence setup

High supply cost

Recovery device, ammunition tier and charged-weapon inputs

The largest XP rate gives the cheapest levels

Accidental Defence experience

Selected attack style after changing weapons

Every Ranged mode trains only Ranged

Buy one meaningful upgrade at a time and retest. A better weapon or ammunition tier can matter more than a small armour improvement, while a missing recovery device can make ordinary training unnecessarily expensive.

Calculate a complete session before buying in bulk

Track starting and ending ammunition, charge usage, potions, transport and experience. Include banking, regrouping and returning to the target in the time. Keep unrelated quest rewards or rare drops out of a repeatable-training comparison.

For example, a 30-minute session gaining 60,000 experience projects to 120,000 per hour at the same pace. If its consumed supplies cost 240,000 coins, the direct supply cost is four coins per experience before any other expenses or loot. These are example numbers, not a current market quote.

Use that test to estimate the remaining supply for your target, then leave a small practical margin. A method that fits your attention and budget is more useful than buying an oversized stack for a setup you have not yet learned.
