Train Magic around the result you want: a quest requirement, combat access, a useful utility spell or faster levels. Quest rewards and ordinary combat cover the opening levels; High Level Alchemy offers a predictable non-combat option from 55; grouped Ancient Magicks can provide much faster combat experience once the spellbook, equipment and location are ready.

This OSRS 1–99 Magic guide explains those routes without treating a maximum benchmark as a promise. Spell access, level, runes, attack style and target all matter. Compare complete sessions rather than only the seconds spent casting.

Lunar access, input supplies and banking

For a regular account, a practical progression is useful quest XP, affordable combat or production to 55, then a choice between alchemy, continued combat and later Ancient or Lunar methods. An Ironman's rune and material acquisition changes that comparison.

Early levels: take useful quest rewards first

Witch's Potion and Imp Catcher give a combined 1,200 Magic experience, enough to reach level 10 from level 1. Their required items still need collecting or buying. Check the quest journal and finish the reward dialogue before calculating your next supply purchase.

The Grand Tree and other later quests provide more Magic experience alongside account unlocks. These require wider preparation, so do not describe their rewards as instantly available to a fresh account. Train the next missing requirement or complete a prerequisite chain that you will use elsewhere.

If you start with combat, bring an appropriate staff, the runes for the selected spell, food and a return route. Practise selecting autocast and verify the experience drop. An equipped staff does not automatically choose the spell you intended.

Combat XP and defensive casting

Ordinary offensive spells give a base casting reward plus extra Magic experience from damage. A splash gives the base reward without the damage component. A higher damage rate can therefore improve training even when the number of casts stays the same.

For standard offensive spellcasting, normal casting gives two Magic experience per damage point in addition to the spell's base reward. Defensive casting instead gives about 1.33 Magic and one Defence experience per damage point, alongside the base Magic reward. Hitpoints experience is separate. Powered weapons and special mechanics should be checked individually.

Restricted accounts must inspect the combat-options panel, particularly after changing staff. Defensive autocast can award unwanted Defence experience. Choosing a spellbook and choosing an attack style are different actions.

Use elemental weaknesses rather than only spell names

Standard elemental spells can benefit from a target's specific weakness, improving both accuracy and damage for the matching element. A fire weakness is a reason to test fire spells; it does not improve an unrelated Ancient spell simply because that spell also deals Magic damage.

Maximum hits within an elemental tier scale to the highest spell of that tier your Magic level unlocks. At 13 Magic, for example, Wind Strike can match Fire Strike's base maximum hit before equipment and target effects. Their rune requirements and base casting XP still differ. The highest elemental name is not automatically the cheapest choice for every target.

Ice giants have a strong fire weakness and can support an appropriate safespotting method. Frost crabs also have a fire weakness but require later quest access. Check the actual monster variant and route before assuming every icy-looking creature has identical stats.

An elemental staff replaces its corresponding rune requirement, not every rune in the spell. Check the spell interface and use a small test batch to measure consumption before buying thousands of runes.

Crab training: steady experience with periodic checks

Low-defence crabs allow longer combat sessions with fewer target-selection decisions. Sand and rock crabs offer familiar access, while ammonite crabs need Bone Voyage. Gemstone Crab requires Children of the Sun and moves between its locations roughly every ten minutes.

Keep the chosen autocast spell active, carry enough runes and monitor Hitpoints. Some targets lose aggression and need a reset; Gemstone Crab instead burrows and is followed through the nearby cave network. Read the behaviour of the target you chose rather than applying one reset method everywhere.

Gemstone Crab has an experience reduction compared with ordinary combat. Its long uninterrupted target time can still be useful, but it is not a source of ordinary Slayer-task bonuses and cannot be trained with a nearby cannon. Low interaction does not make damage or rune consumption disappear.

Alchemy from 21 and 55: calculate the actual margin

Animated High Level Alchemy cast converting an item into coins

Low Level Alchemy unlocks at 21 Magic and awards 31 experience per cast. High Level Alchemy unlocks at 55 and awards 65. Both convert an item into coins; the high-alchemy value is not its Grand Exchange sale price.

High Alchemy needs one nature rune and five fire runes per cast, unless your equipment supplies the fire requirement. Noted items can be alched, which makes suitable bulk supplies convenient. Check the exact item, its alchemy value and its purchase price before a large order.

100 GP

100,000 GP

65 XP

65,000 XP

These are example prices. If either input costs more, the margin falls. Include any other paid inputs or equipment charges and respect purchase limits and trading volume. A profitable-looking item that cannot be bought in quantity is not a complete training plan.

High Alchemy can be cast every five game ticks, or three seconds. The uninterrupted ceiling is therefore 1,200 casts and 78,000 experience per hour. Banking, mistakes or casting during another activity lowers the real result. Optional alchemy during Agility or travel should not make you miss the primary activity's mechanics.

Enchanting: distinguish jewellery from bolts

Jewellery enchanting processes suitable unenchanted items into their enchanted versions. Compare the unenchanted item, cosmic and elemental rune costs, resulting item and demand. Enchanting a useful teleport item can support your account even when it is not your fastest experience option.

Enchant Crossbow Bolt is a different spell interface. One cast can enchant a group of ten gem-tipped bolts, so its experience is per cast rather than ten times that number for each bolt. Select the correct bolt type and test the output before buying a large stack.

Fast manual bolt-enchanting benchmarks involve much more interaction than the automatic sequence. Do not use a manual rate to describe a relaxed session. Purchase limits and thinly traded outputs also make a fixed profit promise unreliable.

Ancient Magicks: access and useful spell milestones

Desert Treasure I unlocks Ancient Magicks. You must also meet the spell's Magic level, carry its runes and switch to the correct spellbook. Owning an ancient staff does not replace the quest or automatically unlock every spell.

Depends on equipment

Choose a weapon that actually supports the spellbook

Burst and barrage spells hit grouped targets in multi-combat areas. They need a suitable target cluster, not simply several monsters somewhere in the same room. Check protective equipment and sustain before pulling a large group.

Slayer bursting and maniacal monkeys

Suitable Slayer assignments, including dust devils and greater nechryael, can combine Magic and Slayer progress. An imbued Slayer helmet supports the task's Magic bonuses. Keep required protection equipped: a grouped damage method is not a substitute for a dust devil's facemask or Slayer helmet.

The Catacombs provide useful multi-combat opportunities, but different monsters have their own Slayer and quest requirements. Read the assignment and location before arriving. A Konar task cannot simply be moved to a more convenient dungeon.

Maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon require the appropriate Monkey Madness II progress. Bring a light source, Prayer supplies, a suitable Ancient-autocast weapon and a return teleport. Keep Protect from Melee active and monitor it while grouping targets.

Learn a repeatable solo pull, cast into the group and regroup when targets spread. The monkeys' potion drops can support longer trips, but bring starting supplies instead of depending on the first drop. Their aggression eventually needs resetting.

Prepared monkey sessions can reach several hundred thousand Magic experience per hour, depending on spell, equipment and interaction. Extra accounts used to group targets create another setup. Compare against a solo benchmark that matches your actual route, and count runes, potions, travel and regrouping.

Mage Training Arena: train toward the reward you need

The Mage Training Arena, pictured in the cover, is north of the Emir's Arena and is separate from the Wilderness Mage Arena. It uses several spell-based rooms and awards pizazz points for rewards.

Telekinetic Grab, alchemy, enchanting and bone-conversion spells support the four rooms. You can begin some activities from low Magic levels, but 33 Magic for Telekinetic Grab lets you participate in all four. Prepare runes or suitable elemental staves for each activity.

Choose the reward first, then track its required point types. Points earned in one room do not replace every other category. This can be useful progression for an account seeking the activity's unlocks, but it is not automatically the fastest route to 99.

Lunar production and utility alternatives

Lunar Diplomacy unlocks the Lunar spellbook. Additional spells can have further quest requirements; Plank Make requires Dream Mentor. Check access, input materials and coins rather than treating the spell level as the whole requirement.

String Jewellery at 80 Magic strings eligible unstrung amulets, giving 83 Magic and four Crafting experience per amulet. It works through an inventory automatically, making banking and the supply of suitable amulets important.

Plank Make at 86 converts eligible logs with runes and a coin payment. Include logs, runes and coins in the cost, then compare with the plank's usable or sale value. Automatic casting and fast manual casting have different rates and attention demands.

Magic Imbue at 82 supports combination-runecrafting methods after the relevant spellbook unlock. It can provide extra Magic experience during another activity, but its repeated rune cost means the experience is not free. Choose it because the complete routine makes sense.

Test the complete method before buying in bulk

  1. Choose a concrete level, spell or quest target.

  2. Check the spellbook, equipment support, attack style and access requirements.

  3. Prepare one short batch of materials or one combat trip.

  4. Record experience, input consumption and complete session time.

  5. Extend the method only after it fits your budget and attention.

Keep Magic experience separate from Defence, Hitpoints or another skill when comparing totals. Keep material gathering separate from casting time, then combine them for an all-in result. For combat-task planning, continue with the Slayer guide; for choosing the next account project, use the beginner and progression guide.
