Slayer progress comes from completing suitable tasks efficiently, not simply choosing the highest-level master or buying the most expensive armour. Your combat stats, task locations, transport, point reserve and preferred rewards all affect the best route.
This OSRS Slayer guide helps you build a repeatable routine. It includes current master-specific block lists and Mortimer's different task system, so older universal skip and block advice is not applied where it no longer fits.
Choose a goal for the next block of tasks
Decide whether you want Slayer levels, combat experience, points, a particular drop or boss access. These goals overlap, but they do not produce the same task list. A slow boss task can be worthwhile for a unique reward while being a poor choice for the fastest Slayer experience.
You can begin Slayer at low combat levels, but stronger combat stats and useful quests improve the routine substantially. If every assignment takes several banking trips and you struggle to damage ordinary targets, a combat upgrade or access quest may be more useful than forcing another difficult task.
Slayer experience is generally awarded for killing the assigned creatures and is roughly related to their Hitpoints, with exceptions and modifiers. Killing an unassigned monster does not become Slayer training just because it has a Slayer requirement.
Choose a master you can use effectively
Master | Ordinary access milestone | Why choose them |
|---|---|---|
Turael/Aya or Spria | Early access; Spria follows A Porcine of Interest | Simple assignments and specific point-boosting plans |
Vannaka | 40 combat | Early-to-mid progression, with some potentially difficult assignments |
Chaeldar | 70 combat and Lost City | Broader mid-level task pool |
Konar | 75 combat | Higher ordinary points, with a specified task location |
Nieve/Steve | 85 combat | A familiar high-level training pool |
Duradel/Kuradal | 100 combat, 50 Slayer and Shilo Village | Strong high-level task options |
Mortimer | 100 combat, 70 Slayer and partial Fallen From Grace | Superior-focused assignments with choices and modifiers |
Some masters have level-99 Slayer access exceptions and quest-dependent replacements. Check the NPC available on your account. A replacement name does not mean the entire training system is a different activity.
Konar specifies both monster and location. Read both before equipping. Killing the right creature elsewhere will not satisfy that assignment. The restriction can also prevent a boss alternative you would normally use for the monster.
Krystilia assigns Wilderness tasks and has a separate streak from ordinary masters. Her point rewards come with Wilderness-specific preparation and risk. Choose her deliberately; do not treat her tasks as interchangeable with a non-Wilderness assignment of the same name.
Prepare each task with a five-part check
Read the assignment. Confirm the monster, remaining count and any location restriction.
Check special protection. Examples include earmuffs, a nose peg, a facemask or appropriate dragonfire protection.
Choose the damage method. Match melee, Ranged or Magic to the actual target and location.
Pack sustain and finishing items. Bring food, Prayer restoration, potions, required finishing tools and an exit.
Test the first few kills. Confirm Slayer experience and count reduction before committing the full inventory.
Do not rely on ordinary Protect from Melee as a substitute for every special defence. Some monsters have attacks or stat drains that require their specific equipment. Likewise, an antifire potion and a shield do not protect every dragon-related attack in every encounter; check the target variant.
Transport is part of the setup. Fairy rings, Slayer-ring teleports, jewellery and a useful house can reduce repeated travel. Keep the return journey in mind before filling every slot with loot.
Black mask and Slayer helmet: use the right version
The black mask provides task-specific melee accuracy and damage benefits. Imbuing it adds the corresponding Ranged and Magic benefits. An ordinary unimbued mask is therefore not the same upgrade for a barrage or Ranged task.
Malevolent Masquerade costs 400 reward points and teaches Slayer-helmet assembly, which requires 55 Crafting. The helmet combines useful protective headgear while retaining the mask's task benefits. Imbue the relevant item when you need the Ranged or Magic effects.
Buy equipment for a complete working setup. A strong weapon, adequate accuracy, useful offensive bonuses and enough supplies can outperform expensive defensive armour paired with poor damage. Test a target before assuming a fashionable item is the best upgrade for your budget.
Bracelets can alter task duration. Slaughter bracelets help retain kills on tasks you want to extend, while expeditious bracelets help finish others sooner. Bring replacements when needed and remember that using a bracelet occupies a slot that might otherwise provide combat bonuses.
Compare single-target, cannon and barrage tasks
Approach | Useful situation | Cost or restriction to check |
|---|---|---|
Melee or single-target Ranged | Simple tasks, modest budget or learning a variant | Accuracy, damage, sustain and travel |
Dwarf multicannon | Allowed locations with productive target coverage | Dwarf Cannon, cannonballs and placement rules |
Burst or barrage | Suitable multi-combat groups | Ancient Magicks, spell level, runes, grouping and protection |
Boss alternative | Specific loot or encounter goals | Assignment eligibility, location restriction and boss mechanics |
The Catacombs of Kourend contain useful multi-combat targets, but a cannon cannot be used there. Do not pack one merely because you intend to attack several monsters. Choose a legal cannon location or a suitable spell-based setup.
Bursting and barraging work well when monsters are grouped so the spell hits several targets. Poor stacking wastes runes and lowers experience. Learn the pull and grouping pattern for the specific creature, keep the correct protective equipment equipped and avoid adding more targets than you can safely sustain.
A cannon can speed suitable tasks at a continuing ammunition cost. Compare the time saved with the cannonball bill, and check whether the task location allows placement. A method that looks fast on the kill counter may still be unaffordable for a long session.
Points: protect the streak and keep a reserve
Ordinary Slayer point rewards start from the fifth consecutive completed task. Turael and Spria tasks do not give points themselves, though their normal completed assignments can contribute to progression toward milestone tasks.
Milestone tasks provide larger rewards: five times the master's base points every tenth task, 15 times every fiftieth, 25 times every hundredth, 35 times every 250th and 50 times every thousandth. Check your streak before deciding which master to use for an important milestone.
Taking a replacement assignment from Turael to cancel an existing harder task resets the relevant ordinary streak. This differs from completing simple assignments as part of a planned point-boosting cycle. Read the warning dialogue instead of accepting a replacement casually.
Keep enough points to handle several undesirable tasks. Spending the entire reserve on cosmetics or optional unlocks can leave you forced to complete a task you cannot comfortably do. The right reserve depends on your master, block setup and willingness to complete slower assignments.
Current skip and block costs
Most ordinary task cancellations cost 30 points. Mortimer is a significant exception at 100. Block costs depend on the master, and each master has their own block list; a Duradel block does not automatically block the same creature for Konar.
Master | Points to block a task | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
Turael/Aya/Spria | 40 | These related masters share their list |
Mazchna/Achtryn | 50 | Master-specific list |
Vannaka | 60 | Master-specific list |
Chaeldar | 70 | Master-specific list |
Konar | 80 | Consider location restrictions too |
Nieve/Steve | 90 | Check the current task weighting |
Duradel/Kuradal or Krystilia | 100 | Separate lists for these masters |
Mortimer | 120 | Only two block slots |
For ordinary masters, additional block slots require 50 quest points each, up to six at 300 quest points; the seventh requires elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary. Mortimer's two-slot system is separate.
Prioritise frequent tasks that are poor for your goal, not simply the monster you disliked once. A high-weight assignment you consistently skip consumes more points over time than a rare annoyance. Check the chosen master's weights before copying someone else's list.
Toggleable task unlocks are another decision. Do not unlock a creature you have no intention of killing just to complete the rewards menu. Turning a toggle off affects future assignment access, while an already-active task still needs to be handled correctly.
Choose useful rewards before cosmetics
Bigger and Badder currently costs 50 points. It enables superior variants of eligible monsters during tasks, adding experience and valuable rare-drop opportunities. It does not make every creature in the game spawn a superior, and the stronger variant may require a different response.
Balance that unlock, useful blocks and helmet assembly with your immediate needs. Extensions make sense for tasks you actually want longer. An extension bought solely because a guide calls the task good can be a poor purchase when your gear, location or preferred reward differs.
Task Storage costs 500 points and lets you hold a task for later. It can break up a long assignment but is not a second independent storage slot for every master. Consider whether the saved flexibility is worth spending the reserve now.
Mortimer: a separate superior-focused system
Mortimer in Wyrmscraig Cavern offers a choice of assignments rather than a single ordinary task. Initially there are two options, increasing to three after 50 tasks completed with him. His assignments focus on creatures with superior variants.
Tasks can have Mortifier modifiers, including point rewards, quantity changes and later unlocks affecting other rewards or experience. Points are not awarded by default on every Mortimer task; read the offered modifier instead of applying another master's base-point table.
His streak is separate, cancellations cost 100 points and each of his two blocks costs 120. Turael cannot replace a Mortimer assignment. Once Mortimer has offered a task choice, resolve that choice with him before expecting another master to hand out an assignment.
Use Mortimer for the superior-focused progression you actually want. He is not a universal upgrade that replaces every other master for all goals, and the larger skip cost makes careful selection important.
Boss alternatives: check the assignment and location
Some ordinary tasks support boss or stronger variants: blue dragons can support Vorkath, abyssal demons can support Abyssal Sire, and araxytes can support Araxxor when their other requirements are satisfied. That does not mean every variant is available to every account or valid under a location-locked task.
Bossing usually changes supply cost, attention and kill speed. Choose it for the encounter or loot goal, and compare Slayer experience over the full session rather than assuming a more difficult monster always gives faster levels.
Review a block of tasks, not one lucky drop
Record the monster, location, method, full completion time, supply cost and points gained. Keep ordinary loot separate from rare drops. After several tasks, you can see which assignments repeatedly cause long travel, expensive supplies or poor damage.
Fix the repeated bottleneck before rebuilding your entire block list. A better teleport, required protection or a grouped spell setup may turn an unpleasant task into a useful one. If the task still conflicts with your goal, decide between completing, cancelling or blocking it using its frequency and the points you can sustain.
