CoX has four puzzle-room types: Jewelled Crabs, Ice Demon, Thieving and Tightrope. Each asks for a different completion action. Turn all crab crystals white, thaw and defeat the Ice Demon, feed cavern grubs to the corrupted scavenger, or bring the Tightrope keystone back to the barrier.
This is a normal Chambers of Xeric learner walkthrough. It explains the tools, colour matches and safe completion route rather than require puzzle speed scripts, rope skips or a particular client plugin. Check the generated layout before starting so the needed tools and combat options are in your inventory.
Pack tools for the rooms you actually have
A crab room provides a hammer, and a suitable blunt weapon can also smash crabs. Ice Demon provides an axe and tinderbox. Thieving is faster with a lockpick, but you can open the chests without one. These fallbacks prevent a forgotten tool from turning into a mistaken claim that the raid cannot be completed.
For Tightrope, the team needs an eligible crosser and a plan to remove the enemies before an ordinary crossing. Its Agility requirement scales with the team, rather than use one fixed recommended level from a generic raid list. Check the actual requirement and who will collect the crystal.
Carry functional melee, ranged and magic options for the raid. Crabs need brief style-specific hits, while Ice Demon and Tightrope also involve real combat. Do not label every puzzle room a safe place to enter with no healing or Prayer.
Use available storage appropriately if you need temporary inventory space. Avoid dropping essential equipment just to gather more kindling or grubs, especially when a disconnect or instance closure could turn a convenient floor pile into lost gear.
Room | Completion action | Key preparation |
|---|---|---|
Jewelled Crabs | Turn all four wall crystals white | Three styles and a hammer or suitable blunt weapon |
Ice Demon | Thaw, then defeat the demon | Axe, tinderbox and a sensible fire-spell or demonbane plan |
Thieving | Fill the scavenger using the trough | Lockpick useful; some inventory space |
Tightrope | Collect the keystone and dispel the barrier | Eligible crosser, ranged combat and recovery supplies |
Jewelled Crabs: route the orb before colouring it
A sculpture emits a white orb that travels through the room. Crabs redirect it, and a coloured crab changes the orb’s colour. Your job is to route the appropriate orb into each wall crystal until every crystal is white. Walking into the orb yourself causes damage, so keep its path clear.
Read the emitter, the target crystal and the visible bounce direction before moving crabs. Trace the route through the current layout rather than copy absolute north/east instructions from a different entrance. Three crabs are enough for the layouts, but extra crabs can interfere if they wander into the orb’s path.
Lure a crab by engaging it and positioning yourself so it follows onto the required route. Stay close enough to retain its interest, use Protect from Melee and smash it in place with the hammer or suitable blunt weapon. The stun holds it temporarily and makes it red initially.
Colour it with the required combat style shortly before the orb arrives. Melee makes red, magic blue and ranged green. The colour is brief, and an orb already coloured cannot pass through a different-coloured crab successfully. If the route uses several crabs, make their timing and colours consistent with the orb that reaches them.
Wall crystal | Required orb | Player action to colour a crab |
|---|---|---|
Black | White | Leave the orb uncoloured |
Yellow | Blue | Magic hit |
Cyan / blue | Red | Melee hit or smash |
Magenta / purple | Green | Ranged hit |
Crabs: fix the cause of a failed bounce
If the orb disappears, check whether it hit you, a wrong-coloured crab or an unintended extra crab. If it reaches the crystal without solving it, compare the crystal and orb colours in the table rather than assume the route is wrong.
A magic attack bonus of -63 or better prevents splashing on these crabs. Heavy negative-magic gear can still create a problem, so verify the actual bonus when using a tiny mage switch. An animation alone does not prove the intended blue recolour occurred.
Thralls can now recolour crabs with their attacks: zombified red, skeletal green and ghostly blue. Do not keep uncontrolled damage on a crab whose colour needs precise timing. Coordinate who is operating the puzzle so a helpful-looking extra attack does not replace the required colour just before impact.
Refresh a smash if the crab is about to move, then reapply the needed colour. Stun duration changes with party size; do not assume a solo demonstration gives the same comfortable pause in a larger team. Finish by checking that all four wall crystals are actually white before leaving.
Ice Demon: fuel the braziers before fighting
The Ice Demon starts protected by an ice storm. Collect the axe and tinderbox if needed, cut nearby saplings for kindling and use it to light and fuel the braziers around the demon. Higher Woodcutting can increase kindling gained, and Firemaking affects lighting success.
Kindling stacks to 28 per stack. You do not need to empty every inventory slot for individual pieces as in old pre-update routes. Gather enough for the team’s scale and keep the braziers fuelled until the storm is dispelled; icefiends attempt to reduce the fires.
Coordinate lighting and additions in a team instead of have one person burn a small stack long before everybody else is ready. Watch the warming progress rather than use a fixed solo quantity as a guaranteed team requirement. When thawed, the icefiends disappear and the demon becomes attackable.
Use Protect from Missiles for the conventional learner response: it encourages the slower, visible snow-boulder attack. Move clear of its three-by-three impact area. Protect from Magic instead encourages Ice Burst, which is faster and can freeze; neither choice is permission to tank every area attack.
Ice Demon: use the right damage category
Fire spells and demonbane weapons avoid the severe reduction applied to ordinary damage and receive favourable interactions. Plan an appropriate option for the inventory and spellbook you are actually bringing. A powered staff is not automatically casting a fire spell because it uses magic damage.
Use the correct spell, runes and supporting items if the plan is fire magic. A demonbane melee setup is another practical route when available, but check its requirements and charges. Do not promise the same performance for an uncharged or different weapon with a similar name.
Defence reduction can help some setups, but consider the following room before spending all special energy. Keep dodging while attacking; better damage makes the combat stage shorter without turning its area attacks into harmless scenery.
Collect the potion secondaries after the kill and pass them to the preparation player. The room’s completion includes defeating the demon, not merely melting the storm and leaving an active boss in front of the next passage.
Thieving: feed the trough steadily
Open chests to collect cavern grubs, then deposit them into the trough for the corrupted scavenger. Watch the feeding progress until it becomes full and tired and opens the route. Keeping a full stack in your inventory does not advance the room until it reaches the trough.
A lockpick speeds opening; it is not an absolute entry requirement. Successful openings provide grubs, and higher Thieving can improve collection. Make useful deposits while the team keeps searching instead of have everybody wait with their full inventory until the very end.
Some chests release a small damaging cloud rather than provide useful grubs, and one provides bats. Remember which chests were unhelpful so you do not repeatedly reopen them. The trap cloud is not an ordinary poison status that an antipoison makes harmless.
Use the bat food and available storage sensibly if you need recovery or space. Once the room is complete, collect its secondaries and confirm which player is carrying them for the next potion-preparation stop.
Tightrope: clear the enemies before the normal crossing
The keystone is across the rope, while deathly mages and rangers guard the area. For a first clear, remove the enemies before crossing. Running the rope while they are idle can make them all focus the crosser, with damage arriving together at the end.
Focus targets with the team. Use protection against the active attacker—Magic for a mage, Missiles for a ranger—while remembering that they can deal reduced damage through prayer. Mages are commonly removed first, followed by controlled ranger kills. Avoid pulling every enemy at once merely to reach a preferred damage tile.
Obstacles and carefully managed positions can reduce incoming attacks, but depend on the room layout and weapon range. Check the actual enemy response before treating a corner as safe. Keep health available for a cross-style hit rather than use a screenshot as a universal immunity guarantee.
After the clear, have the eligible player cross, pick up the keystone crystal and use it on the shimmering barrier. Crossing without collecting the item is incomplete, as is carrying it while everybody waits at an intact barrier. The keystone action opens the route.
Why the rope skip is a separate lesson
Experienced players can bypass the ordinary enemy clear with timing and specialised recovery methods. That is not the default solution when a learner notices the room is taking a while. An unplanned crossing under several enemies can cause a rapid death.
Agree a skip only when the crosser knows the method, the team understands its jobs and the required supplies are present. Do not start one silently because a teammate’s video made it look easy. A normal clear gives everyone time to learn targets, prayers and the completion item.
If a mistake causes a death, rebuild the health and supply reserve before the next attempt rather than repeat an uncontrolled crossing. CoX protects regular Hardcore Ironman status, while Hardcore Group Ironmen lose a group life. Points and raid supplies are still affected for everyone.
A useful puzzle-room milestone is completing each action without a rescue: correct orb colour and route, sustained brazier progress, useful trough deposits and a returned keystone. From there, improve individual routes and coordination before adding speed skips.
