Alchemical Hydra is a repeatable encounter once you can do three things together: lure the boss over the correct vent, track its current attack style and respond to the phase special. Start with a supported Ranged setup and learn the ordinary movement before attempting flame or lightning skips.

This guide covers the boss in the Karuulm Slayer Dungeon. It explains task access, dungeon heat protection, the four phases and the final prayer alternation. Ordinary hydras have different combat and reward expectations; reaching their room is not the end of the boss route.

Task access and dungeon heat come first

You need 95 Slayer and a qualifying hydra assignment. Hydra tasks are currently available from Konar quo Maten and Mortimer; the Alchemical Hydra boss assignment is a Konar option. Check the actual assignment and any location restriction before preparing a long trip.

Unless the elite Kourend & Kebos Diary removes the dungeon-floor requirement for your account, wear boots of stone, boots of brimstone or granite boots. Ordinary combat boots are not interchangeable with heat protection. Check the equipped pair after changing gear at a bank.

Travel to Mount Karuulm, enter the dungeon, continue north and then toward the boss area past the regular hydras. A suitable unlocked shortcut can shorten the approach. Orrvor quo Maten is outside the boss entrance; use this as a final preparation checkpoint.

The encounter includes a safe observation area before the fighting chamber. Once the fight is active, the doors are locked and logging out inside is not a normal escape plan. Bring a working teleport and know where it is before entering.

Access check

What to confirm

What it does not replace

Slayer

95 and an eligible hydra or boss task.

Combat equipment and phase knowledge.

Heat

Valid protective boots or the elite diary exemption.

Avoiding poison, lightning or fire mechanics.

Main weapon

A supported Ranged weapon with its correct ammunition or charges.

The task requirement.

Escape

A usable teleport in a fixed slot.

Locked doors do not open because you are low on food.

Build one complete Ranged setup

A toxic blowpipe, suitable crossbow or another supported bow route can work depending on your account. A blowpipe needs darts and scales; a crossbow needs compatible bolts. A dragon hunter crossbow is one useful upgrade, not the only weapon that can complete the encounter.

Use an imbued Slayer helmet or other appropriate imbued task item if relying on its Ranged bonus. Balance the rest of the setup around damage, Prayer duration and the actual dungeon-boot restriction. Do not copy a picture of an elite-diary account wearing ordinary boots unless your own account has the exemption.

Bring Ranged boosts, Prayer restoration, healing, poison treatment and an exit. For the first trip, carry enough food to recover from ordinary errors instead of replacing nearly all of it with potions for an experienced long-stay method. A few learning kills followed by banking give useful information about your consumption.

Higher Ranged, Hitpoints and Prayer make learning more comfortable, but recommended combat levels are separate from the Slayer gate. Rigour is valuable if unlocked and supported; its presence in a high-level setup is not an additional entrance requirement.

The vent route: red, green, blue, then none

For the first three colours, Hydra reduces incoming damage until the correct chemical vent sprays it. Lure the boss's footprint over the vent and wait for the successful weakening cue. Standing your character on a vent is not the same action as positioning the boss there.

Hydra colour

Correct vent with north-oriented directions

Main special

Green: poison

Red vent, south-east.

Poison splashes and pools.

Blue: electric

Green vent, north-east.

Lightning moves toward your location.

Red: flame

Blue vent, north-west.

Fire enclosure and a following flame trail.

Grey: final

No new vent required.

Alternating basic attacks, with poison returning.

An incorrect vent can empower the boss instead of weakening it. Look for the actual successful spray and response before treating normal damage as restored. If your hits suddenly remain reduced, check the vent mechanic before deciding that the weapon has become ineffective.

Keep the compass consistent while learning those directions. Choose a position that makes Hydra walk onto the intended vent without sending you through poison or an active special. Do not stand under the boss merely because the next vent is on the other side.

RuneLite Tile Packs: load the Hydra markers

RuneLite's Plugin Hub includes Tile Packs by TrevorMDev. It lets you enable ready-made tile-marker packs, which can make the vent route and starting positions easier to recognise while learning. For the Ranged route in this guide, search for Alchemical Hydra (range); the separate Alchemical Hydra (melee) pack is for a different method.

  1. Open RuneLite's Plugin Hub, search for Tile Packs, check the author and install or enable it.

  2. Open the plugin's tile-pack panel from the right sidebar and search for Hydra.

  3. Find Alchemical Hydra (range) and use its green add icon to enable the pack. Avoid enabling overlapping Ranged and melee variants together.

  4. Read the tile labels before starting. Where a pack provides a help icon, use it to check the associated method. If a pack is missing from the list, check the panel's hidden-pack filters.

These are static markers, not a live safe-tile detector. A tile labelled for a skip depends on that method's timing; it is not automatically safe during an ordinary learning kill. Keep using the vent colours, actual attack count and current special attack to decide when to move. Tile Packs stores its markers separately from RuneLite's built-in Ground Markers, so removing an ordinary marker is not how you disable the whole pack; use the pack panel's remove icon.

Count basic attacks and read the style change

Hydra uses Magic and Ranged, changing style after three basic attacks during the first three phases. Its initial style is not fixed. Read the opening projectile, establish the active style and track the next basic attacks instead of assuming every kill starts the same way.

Prepare the next protection before its attack launches. Keep the basic-attack rhythm separate from the floor special and the colour change. A new colour tells you to handle a vent; it is not permission to ignore which style the boss is currently using.

If you lose the count while eating or moving, watch the actual animation and style change to recover. Repeating an uncertain count confidently is worse than spending a moment rebuilding it. Leave enough health to survive a mistake while doing that.

Green phase: weaken, then leave the splashes

Lure green Hydra over the south-eastern red vent. Once weakened, continue the current three-attack protection rhythm while watching for the poison special. Move away from the targeted area as the blobs arrive, then settle into a clear position for the next basic attack.

Poison treatment deals with the status effect; it does not let you stand on a damaging floor pool. Check both the tile you leave and the destination. A short clear move is more useful than a long click that routes through several pools.

At the next health threshold a head falls away and the body becomes blue. Use the change as a cue to reposition for the green vent, while preserving attention to the basic attack style.

Blue phase: keep clear of converging lightning

Move Hydra over the north-eastern green vent and confirm it is weakened. When lightning forms and moves toward you, use the clear northern route and move west as appropriate, keeping ahead of the hazards. Do not keep attacking from the original position simply because your overhead is correct.

Alchemical Hydra in its blue electric phase

There are tile-specific trapping methods, but they depend on a precise sequence. Learn a normal clear movement path first. Importing markers without understanding how the currents follow you can leave the lightning active when you step off the expected tile.

If lightning has already caught you, recover health and positioning rather than adding every missed attack back immediately. Watch the phase transition: it changes what movement you will need next.

Red phase: weaken, then walk the following fire

Lure red Hydra over the north-western blue vent. During its special, the boss moves to the centre, fixes your position briefly and creates fire around the area. Keep the camera wide enough to see the open route and the tracking flame rather than only the boss model.

Alchemical Hydra’s red phase with walls of fire across the chamber

When movement is available and the trail begins following, turn run off and walk along a clear line inside the available space. Running can make the following fire behave more aggressively and reduce the control you are trying to learn. Do not cut through the side walls to recover an attack.

Keep moving until the trail is resolved, then restore the ordinary attack rhythm. Ranged lets you resume damage without chasing into the boss. Clicking a target outside your weapon's reach can still move your character, so check actual range if you are repeatedly pulled into fire.

A strong setup may push the boss to the final phase before the full special develops. Treat that as a damage outcome, not your only survival plan. Remaining fire from an earlier attack can still occupy the floor after the colour changes.

Grey phase: change after every basic attack

The final colour does not require another vent. Hydra instead attacks faster and alternates Magic and Ranged every basic attack, starting opposite to the last style used in the previous phase. Do not continue the earlier three-attack count.

Alchemical Hydra in the grey final phase with its remaining head

Once an attack starts, prepare protection for the next style, then repeat. Read the animation instead of waiting for its projectile to arrive. Keep the interface stable; optional gear or bracelet switches can wait if they would break the protection rhythm.

Poison returns during this phase. Leave the targeted area while maintaining the alternation for ordinary attacks. A floor-special action is not a reason to lose track of the next basic style.

Keep avoiding remaining pools around the kill. A defeated boss does not instantly erase every floor effect. Collect the important loot and decide whether the current supplies support the next attempt before staying in the chamber.

A complete first-kill checklist

  1. Confirm the task, heat-safe boots or exemption, ammunition, health, Prayer and teleport.

  2. Identify the opening attack style and lure green Hydra onto the red vent.

  3. Avoid poison while keeping the three-basic-attack protection rhythm.

  4. On blue, use the green vent and move clear of the lightning.

  5. On red, use the blue vent and walk a clear route for the tracking fire.

  6. On grey, stop using three-attack blocks and alternate after every basic attack.

  7. Leave remaining floor hazards, collect loot and review supplies.

For the first session, record whether the main difficulty was a missed vent, a lost count, a lightning move or the fire trail. Improve that one response before pursuing a long task or an advanced special skip.

Rewards and heat-safe recovery

Hydra's claw supports the dragon hunter lance project with a Zamorakian hasta; hydra leather supports ferocious gloves through its separate creation process. Other rewards include ring components and regular supplies. A component drop is not the same as having its finished item ready to equip.

Rare rewards should remain separate from the supplies you can expect to use on a learning trip. Include ammunition, potions, travel, failed attempts and banking in comparisons. Ironmen also need to account for producing the inputs and obtaining any base items for upgrades.

Orrvor quo Maten holds lost equipment after an instance death, with a 100,000-coin reclaim fee. Another unsafe death before reclaiming destroys the stored items. Unless exempt through the elite diary, bring a spare set of heat-protective boots for the return; leaving the only valid pair inside storage can expose you to the dungeon floor before you reclaim it.

Deaths are unsafe for HCIM status and HCGIM lives. UIMs need to plan carried inventory and retrieval storage explicitly. A safe observation room is not a safe-death boss, and a successful ordinary recovery does not restore a Hardcore life.

Use the Ranged training guide when damage or ammunition is the next preparation project, and the Slayer planning guide for the assignment route. Once the ordinary mechanics are consistent, choose upgrades based on the part of the trip that actually limits you.
