For your first Scurrius kill, use a manageable setup, choose the room deliberately and focus on three responses: keep the right protection prayer active, move away from a rubble shadow and clear the small rats without forgetting the boss. A clean first kill is a better target than matching an experienced player's experience rate.

This OSRS Scurrius guide covers the shared fight, then explains what changes for mains, Ironmen, Group Ironmen, Hardcore accounts and Ultimate Ironmen. It describes normal OSRS worlds; seasonal modes can have different rules. Scurrius is a dangerous encounter. A free private instance is not a safe-death practice mode.

Before entering: choose the right room for your account

Scurrius lives in Varrock Sewers. Enter through the manhole east of Varrock Palace, head east inside the sewers and find the broken bars beside Historian Aldo. Choose the private option for a solo instance; the public room contains a stronger version of the boss. Solo and public kills therefore should not be compared as identical encounters.

Account

Room and reward choice

Preparation that changes

Main

A private solo room gives a controlled learning attempt. Public groups are another option.

Buy only a short learning trip's supplies before deciding what to upgrade.

Ironman

Use solo attempts when working toward your own spine and normal loot.

Public participation with other accounts gives killcount but not ordinary loot; the MVP medium-clue exception is not a spine-farming plan.

Group Ironman

Use the shared instance with your own group.

Agree who brings supplies, handles minions and needs a weapon first. Do not assume unrelated public players preserve group loot eligibility.

Hardcore Ironman

The same mechanics apply, but a death can end Hardcore status.

Enter with a tested exit and a conservative recovery plan. A learner's suggested stats do not guarantee survival.

Hardcore Group Ironman

A death here consumes a life from the group's shared pool.

Agree an exit call before entering; one member's risk affects the group.

Ultimate Ironman

Use solo attempts for the ordinary Ironman loot route.

Prepare inventory space and item recovery before the attempt. Ordinary bank and gravestone instructions are not a UIM storage plan.

If your goal is learning, avoid filling the trip with optional switches. If your goal is an untradeable weapon component, confirm that the chosen room allows the rewards you need. Those are separate decisions.

Death and recovery: read the section for your mode

Main and regular Ironman: a grave from the private encounter appears outside the lair near Historian Aldo. Check the game's Items Kept on Death interface for your actual equipment and arrange a return route. Items deliberately left on the floor are not automatically protected by that grave.

Hardcore: item recovery does not restore a lost Hardcore life or status. Do not interpret an accessible grave as evidence that the death is safe. Keep the exit easy to select, and leave before a low-supply attempt becomes an emergency.

UIM: you do not receive the ordinary gravestone or Death's Office storage. Death in an instance without its own retrieval service places items outside under the applicable UIM ground-pile rules. UIM deathpiles have a 60-minute logged-in timer, which is different from ordinary dropped items. Know where and how you will reclaim the pile before entering.

An unsafe death can also destroy items already held in an Item Retrieval Service elsewhere. Clear that risk before learning this boss. Do not copy a main's instruction to bank everything, keep three valuable items or rely on Death's Office: those assumptions do not describe UIM item management.

A practical learner setup

Moderate combat stats and 43 Prayer are a sensible preparation target for a learner: 43 unlocks all three standard protection prayers. This is a recommendation, not an entry requirement or a promise that every account with those levels will find the fight easy. More Hitpoints, damage and familiarity provide more room to recover from mistakes.

Choose one combat style that your account can supply comfortably. Use a compatible weapon, armour that supports it, food, Prayer restoration and a working exit. A first trip does not need a premium full set, several special-attack weapons or a switch for every style.

Style

Before your first spine

After the weapon is unlocked

Melee

A usable fast melee weapon, suitable armour and a compatible off-hand if one-handed.

Bone mace at 50 Attack. Select the XP style you intend to train.

Ranged

A bow or crossbow you can equip with compatible ammunition and an affordable supply.

Bone shortbow at 50 Ranged. It still needs suitable arrows; it is not a charged bow with free ammunition.

Magic

A spell or powered weapon supported by your equipment, plus its runes or charges.

Bone staff at 50 Magic. Its built-in attack consumes chaos-rune charges.

For a main or bank-using Ironman, one illustrative 28-slot learning inventory is an exit item, a combat-boosting potion, four Prayer potions and 22 pieces of food. This is a starting layout to adjust, not a tested universal supply requirement. Additional runes, a secondary weapon or other tools displace food. UIMs must adapt it to their real carried equipment and storage restrictions.

Check the exit's requirements, available charges or runes and click position before combat. Keep a small reserve for returning and recovery. The right stopping point is when your remaining supplies no longer support another controlled attempt, not when every food slot is empty.

The four cues to learn first

Players fighting Scurrius in Varrock Sewers with summoned rats and falling rubble

Visible event

Your response

Common mistake

Close-range tail attack

Use Protect from Melee during the relevant close-range phase.

Leaving a different prayer on after an earlier projectile.

Electrical Magic projectile

Have Protect from Magic active when it lands.

Watching only your inventory and missing the projectile.

Thrown fur projectile

Use Protect from Missiles for its impact.

Assuming every projectile is Magic.

A rubble shadow on your tile

Move to a clear tile before the rubble lands.

Changing prayer while continuing to stand in the shadow.

Learn the projectile animations at a comfortable camera angle. Give yourself enough screen space to see the boss, your character and the ground around you. A hidden floor tile is a harder problem than an inexpensive armour piece.

When several things demand attention, first avoid the marked tile, maintain the relevant protection and heal or restore as needed. Resume damage once you are under control. Spending a moment recovering is better practice than repeatedly eating while standing in the same hazard.

Scurrius beside the food piles during a solo encounter

Your first solo kill, in order

  1. Enter prepared. Start with healthy Hitpoints and Prayer, the intended weapon and the correct attack style. Use the private room if that is the plan you prepared.

  2. Establish the opening. Protect from Melee while handling close-range attacks. Watch the floor instead of staring at damage numbers.

  3. Recognise the feeding section. From roughly 80% boss health, Scurrius can move to the food piles. Respond to the ranged and Magic projectiles during feeding and continue avoiding rubble.

  4. Handle summoned rats without losing the boss. Clear them with a suitable method while preserving protection, movement and your supply reserve.

  5. Recognise the finish. Below roughly 30%, the central phase uses faster ranged and Magic attacks with repeated rubble. Keep identifying each projectile; there is no ordinary boss melee attack in this final phase.

  6. Finish the whole encounter. After Scurrius dies, clear remaining minions, collect rewards and decide whether to leave or prepare the next kill.

For the first attempt, stop after one kill if that lets you review the fight calmly. Write down the moment that cost the most food. On the next attempt, improve that one response before changing the entire setup.

Summoned rats and the food piles

A player fighting Scurrius beside a food pile in the lair

Rat bone weapons have no normal attack delay against the rats Scurrius summons, making repeated minion hits much faster. That does not mean every attack against Scurrius itself has no delay. Moving to another minion can still take time.

Before obtaining a rat weapon, use a manageable minion method instead of expecting the same rate as an established setup. Avoid a complicated weapon switch if it repeatedly makes you miss rubble or Prayer. Refine damage only after the basic sequence is consistent.

Remaining rats continue to matter after the boss dies. Deal with them before treating the arena as a break area. The food pile can restore health outside combat with its cooldown, but it is not an unlimited replacement for brought food during a fight. You also cannot solve a food shortage by lighting a cooking fire inside this lair.

Build the rat weapon that matches your account

Every rat bone weapon needs an untradeable Scurrius' spine. A main can buy tradeable materials, but cannot bypass the spine by buying the finished weapon. Do not design a first-kill setup that already assumes you own the reward.

Weapon

Materials and creation

Use requirement

Bone mace

Bone mace

Spine and rune mace; 35 Smithing with a hammer at an anvil, or Aldo's paid service.

50 Attack

Bone shortbow

Bone shortbow

Spine and yew shortbow; 35 Fletching with a knife, or Aldo's paid service.

50 Ranged

Bone staff

Bone staff

Spine, battlestaff and 1,000 chaos runes; 35 Crafting with a chisel, or Aldo's paid service.

50 Magic

Historian Aldo charges 50,000 coins to make a weapon when you use his service, in addition to its materials. The staff's initial chaos runes become its starting charges, and each built-in attack uses a charge. Account for that continuing supply; the finished staff is not an unlimited source of free casts.

Rat bone weapons add ten to maximum hit against eligible rats and are specialised for that target group. They are not general replacements for your normal equipment. Plan your first spine around the style you can sustain rather than aiming to make all three immediately.

For Ironmen, obtaining the base item is a separate project. Making the bone shortbow takes 35 Fletching, but making a yew shortbow from logs has a higher requirement. Choose a viable shop, drop or production route before relying on the lower assembly level. UIMs should make space for the spine and construction materials before extending a trip.

Improve consistency before chasing rates

Use three simple goals: complete a kill with controlled supplies, repeat several kills with fewer avoidable hits, then consider faster minion handling or damage upgrades. Keep your account's restrictions ahead of a speed target.

A useful session note records food eaten, Prayer doses consumed, mistakes, time and rewards. If a private kill costs most of an inventory, ask which hits caused that loss. More expensive equipment might help, but it will not teach you to leave a rubble shadow.

Scurrius supports combat training, but do not compare a first trip before the spine with a mature rat-weapon setup. Public and private variants, combat stats, supply use and attention change the experience rate. Likewise, loot values do not make every learner trip profitable.

A successful session is one you can repeat deliberately. When you can recognise the cues, maintain supplies and leave without panic, you have built skills that transfer to later bosses. Continue with the Ranged training guide if you need levels, or the levels-versus-gear comparison if you are choosing the next upgrade.

Before your next attempt

  • Confirm the room supports your account's intended rewards.

  • Check the selected style, weapon charges or ammunition and supply reserve.

  • Keep the exit easy to find and establish a stopping rule before entering.

  • For Hardcore, recognise the life or status risk; for UIM, resolve storage and recovery first.

  • After the kill, clear minions, collect the reward and review one improvement.
