Your first Fire Cape is a test of preparation, positioning and attention over a long encounter. Use a Ranged setup you can sustain, preserve Prayer for the later waves and make Jad's attack animation your first priority. A slower run with supplies left is a better first attempt than a faster setup you cannot control.
This OSRS Fight Caves guide follows a learner's route through the 63 waves, including the important wave changes, the final preparation before Jad and a step-by-step healer plan. It covers the regular Fight Cave, not the Fight Pit, Inferno or a multi-Jad challenge.
Before entering: access, goals and account rules
The TzHaar Fight Cave is members' content beneath Karamja, reached through the TzHaar city in the Karamja volcano. Check the entrance's name before committing. There is no requirement to own a Fire Cape or to have a TzHaar Slayer assignment for an ordinary attempt.
As a preparation target, roughly 70 Ranged, healthy Hitpoints and all three protection prayers make a sensible starting project. More Defence and Prayer give additional room for mistakes and longer trips. These are learner recommendations, not entry requirements. A toxic blowpipe specifically needs 75 Ranged, so a recommendation to train toward 70 does not imply that you can equip one.
Hardcore distinction: death in the Fight Cave is safe for solo Hardcore Ironman status, but it costs a life for Hardcore Group Ironmen. HCGIM players must treat the whole run as a dangerous attempt and leave deliberately rather than dying to finish. Item-safe content does not automatically protect every account's status.
Mains can buy a supply batch; Ironmen need to prepare their ammunition and potions through their own account. UIMs should plan the carried inventory before entering. No account can bank or restock halfway through an ordinary run while retaining that attempt.
Build a complete Ranged setup
Weapon route | Preparation | Learning trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Rune crossbow | 61 Ranged, compatible bolts and a suitable shield. | A practical accessible route with an off-hand. Lower damage means more time maintaining Prayer. |
Karil's crossbow | 70 Ranged and enough bolt racks. | A two-handed option. Bolt racks are its ammunition; ordinary crossbow bolts will not work. |
Toxic blowpipe | 75 Ranged, darts and Zulrah's scales. | Fast attacks and a healing special attack, with two resources to maintain and no shield. |
Wear Ranged armour you can equip, a useful amulet, gloves, boots and your best available ammunition-saving device where it works with the chosen weapon. Include Prayer bonus and defensive bonuses in the decision. A single expensive weapon is not a replacement for enough ammunition, restoration and healing.
Check the selected attack style and actual range before entering. Restricted builds should remember that Ranged longrange trains Defence. A weapon switch can change the number of tiles between you and a target; clicking something outside your range can walk your character forward.
Keep the setup simple for your first cape. A second weapon may improve particular waves, but every switch occupies inventory space and adds another action. Begin with a loadout whose charge use and attack range you understand. Upgrade the weakest part after reviewing an attempt.
Inventory, healing and the stopping rule
Bring a Ranged boost, enough Prayer restoration for a long run and healing that you know how to use. Saradomin brews offer several healing doses per slot but lower combat stats; super restores counter the drain. Ordinary food is simpler, while taking more slots for a similar amount of healing.
One illustrative 28-slot brew-based layout is two Ranging potions, six Saradomin brews, eighteen super restores and two pieces of food. This is a planning example for an account that can obtain those supplies, not an Onyx-tested requirement or a guarantee that it fits every level. Extra weapons, runes or utility items displace part of that inventory.
With a brew setup, learn the usual three brew doses to one super restore dose sequence before the run, then reapply a Ranged boost as needed. That is a stat-management routine, not an instruction to drink four doses rapidly during Jad. Choose each action around the attack you must protect against.
If brews are unavailable, use a food-and-Prayer-restoration route you can support and be more conservative with damage. Reduce avoidable hits rather than assuming a particular inventory will compensate for every mistake. Supplies for an entire unfamiliar encounter can be substantial, especially with a slower weapon.
Enter with a stopping rule: leave if the remaining supplies cannot support another controlled section. Leaving ends the attempt, but protects an HCGIM life and avoids turning fatigue into a preventable failure. Schedule enough time to concentrate; lower-level runs can take well over an hour.
RuneLite: preview the next wave and its spawn tiles
Fight Caves Spawn Predictor by Damen is an optional RuneLite Plugin Hub addition that uses the encounter's preset rotations. It can label where monsters are expected to appear on the current or next wave, giving you time to plan a position before finishing the last enemy.
Plugin | What it adds | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
Fight Caves Spawn Predictor — Damen | Labels and tile overlays for predicted spawns, with Current, Next or Both display modes. | Use it when you want to plan around where enemies will appear. |
Fight Cave Waves — Nightfirecat | A display of the monsters in the current and/or next wave. | Useful for checking which enemies are coming; it is a separate plugin. |
Open RuneLite's plugin configuration panel, then its Plugin Hub using the plug icon.
Search for Fight Caves Spawn Predictor, check that the author is Damen, install it and open its settings.
Set Wave Display Mode to Next for a less crowded preview. Choose Both if you want current and next-wave markers together.
Leave Display Entrance Label enabled. Wait outside for calibration and the green entrance message indicating that you can proceed; avoid entering while the plugin is still determining the rotation or warning about a rotation change.
In the Plugin Hub search results shown below, choose the second result, Fight Caves Spawn Predictor, then click its Install button. The first result, Fight Cave Waves, is the separate monster-list plugin.
Before killing a wave's final enemy, inspect the next spawns and choose where you can separate threats. For example, plan how to isolate a ranger while maintaining Magic protection from an exposed Ket-Zek. The coloured tiles mark predicted monster spawns, not guaranteed safe places for your character to stand.
Prediction depends on the correct rotation. If the displayed spawns disagree with the run, recheck that rotation instead of following the markers blindly. Keep watching the actual monsters, your Prayer and Jad's attack animations; this is a positioning aid, not a replacement for those responses.
The wave changes that matter most
First wave | New threat | Response to learn |
|---|---|---|
1 | Tz-Kih, the small bat | Remove reachable Prayer drainers before they spend time attacking you. |
3 | Tz-Kek, which splits after death | Finish the smaller creatures too; an apparently completed kill can leave more targets. |
7 | Tok-Xil, the ranger | Use Protect from Missiles when appropriate, or isolate its damage with positioning. |
15 | Yt-MejKot, the large melee fighter | Trap it behind terrain or another suitable obstacle rather than standing in its reach. |
31 | Ket-Zek, the mage | Use Protect from Magic while exposed to it, and stay out of its melee range. |
62 | Two Ket-Zeks | Maintain Magic protection and note the orange one's spawn for Jad. |
63 | TzTok-Jad and later his healers | Read each attack, choose protection, then perform a secondary action. |
Use terrain to separate threats. Once mages appear, protecting against Magic often means an exposed ranger becomes the next damage source to remove. A bat trapped safely behind something is less urgent than an enemy actively damaging you. Apply priorities to what can actually reach you rather than following a rigid target list.
Do not chase a trapped enemy by running through every other attacker. Finish accessible threats, identify the next safe position and move deliberately. Large melee enemies are much easier to manage when their path is blocked; a position is only safe while that path remains blocked.
Between difficult sections, check remaining doses, ammunition, boosts and health. Recover while the situation is controlled. Waiting until the next wave has spawned is a poor time to discover that the weapon is empty or the Prayer reserve has gone.
Prepare for Jad before finishing wave 62
The orange Ket-Zek on wave 62 identifies the location where Jad will spawn. Note it before killing both mages. Position so the spawn will be visible without standing close enough to invite Jad's melee attack.
Restore health and Prayer, check the Ranged boost and leave the prayer interface ready. Protect from Missiles is a practical starting protection while watching for Jad's first animation. Switch when the actual cue requires it. Do not depend on the first attack happening to match the prayer you left on.
Keep the camera stable and make sure both Jad and your own position are visible. A clear view matters more than another last-second equipment change. Once the final mage is gone, stop treating the encounter as another routine wave.
Read Jad's animation, then act
Visible cue | Protection | Priority |
|---|---|---|
Jad rears up and holds his front legs raised. | Protect from Magic | Switch as you recognise the wind-up, before the attack lands. |
Jad quickly lifts and stamps his front feet. | Protect from Missiles | Use the stomp as the cue; waiting for the Ranged sound can be too late. |
You have moved into melee distance. | A separate melee attack becomes possible. | Keep distance on this learner Ranged route instead of adding an unwarned attack to the problem. |
The rhythm is: watch the animation, confirm protection, make one necessary extra action, then watch again. That action might be one potion dose, eating once or selecting a healer. There is no need to fill every interval with clicks.
If a mistake costs health, restore the correct protection before trying to repair the inventory. Panic-drinking several doses while ignoring the next animation can turn one survivable error into a second hit. When the prayer already matches the next attack, you can leave it active.
Handle the four healers without losing the rhythm
When Jad falls below 150 Hitpoints, four Yt-HurKot appear to heal him. They add target selection to the same prayer test; Jad's attacks continue. Do not abandon the animation to click all four immediately.
Respond to Jad's current attack and confirm your protection.
Attack one healer to get its attention, then return to watching Jad.
Repeat for the remaining healers, using another attack cycle when needed.
Move the healers away from Jad when you have a controlled opportunity, keeping yourself outside Jad's melee reach.
Check both incoming healer damage and whether Jad is still being healed. Kill or manage the healers once the position is stable, then finish Jad.
Tagging a healer does not guarantee that its healing has stopped permanently. Fight Cave healers can still heal Jad while attacking you if they remain close enough. Pulling them clear matters. If your Defence cannot sustain their melee damage, do not assume that tanking all four is the learner solution.
Check attack range before selecting a healer behind the boss. An out-of-range click may walk you toward Jad. Experienced run-through methods and attempts to out-damage every healer add demands that are unnecessary for learning the ordinary kill.
If the healers restored Jad to full before they were killed, they can return after his health drops again. Recognise why another set appears rather than treating it as an unexplained extra phase.
Taking a break and reviewing a failed attempt
You can request a pause by clicking logout once during a wave. Finish that wave and read the game's messages before logging out; the next wave is held. An immediate second logout can mean repeating the current wave. Plan a break on an earlier controlled wave instead of first learning the resume behaviour immediately before Jad.
On return, prepare protection and your view before dismissing the dialogue that resumes the encounter. A saved run is not a bank trip or a refill of consumed supplies. Avoid treating a forced disconnect as a break method.
After a failure, record the first repeated cause: ranger damage during mage waves, unnecessary movement, inadequate supplies, a missed Jad cue or uncontrolled healers. Change that one part before replacing the entire setup. Reaching Jad with a strong reserve is progress even when the first boss attempt fails.
Claim the cape and choose the next project
Completing all 63 waves awards the Fire Cape. A pet is a separate chance, not a guaranteed part of the completion. Keep your first successful setup and notes so a later replacement cape does not require relearning everything.
For levels and ammunition planning, use the Ranged training guide. For choosing the next equipment investment, read the levels-versus-gear comparison. Your first cape is most useful as evidence that you can prepare, sustain attention and follow mechanics under pressure.
