For a first Cerberus kill, prepare a reliable damage setup, enter with Prayer in reserve and read the three souls in their actual order. Correctly blocking a soul drains Prayer instead of health. The task is therefore both a prayer-switching test and a supply-management problem.
This guide covers the ordinary fight rather than a red-X or low-health flinching method. Learn the opening triple attack, souls and lava together, then decide whether damage upgrades or supply-saving techniques are useful for your account.
Access, task and route to the lair
You need a hellhound or Cerberus assignment and an effective Slayer level of 91 to damage the boss. A wild pie can provide the Slayer boost from 86, but the boost has to remain high enough throughout combat. Reaching the room once is not proof that a decaying boost will last for repeated kills.
Cerberus is reached through the small opening near the hellhounds in Taverley Dungeon. The 70 Agility pipe route and 80 Agility wall route shorten the journey, with boosts possible. Without an appropriate shortcut, plan the longer dungeon route and its dusty-key requirement instead of assuming the door will open.
A key master teleport is an alternative arrival at the entrance area. Keep an independent escape and a return plan. Arriving at the boss is not the same as having enough supplies to recover from the first learning mistake.
Around 85 or better in the relevant melee skills, useful Hitpoints and 70 Prayer make a reasonable preparation project. These are learner recommendations, not additional formal entry gates. More Prayer gives room to block the souls and restore without trying to optimise every dose immediately.
Choose one supported main weapon
Cerberus is a demon, so appropriate demonbane weapons are valuable options. A charged Arclight or an Emberlight route can support melee; use the selected style that fits the actual weapon and equipment. Other useful melee weapons and developed Ranged methods exist, but the first setup should be something your account can maintain.
Do not spend the whole bank on a shield and leave the primary weapon or potions unsupported. Spectral helps with one specific drain mechanic. It does not provide the same benefit as faster damage during every part of the encounter, and it is not required for a first kill.
Part of the setup | Learner decision | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
Weapon | One supported melee route, with useful defensive equipment. | Charges, selected style and actual equip requirements. |
Prayer support | Restoration for ordinary prayers and soul sets. | You can restore before running out, not just after the next hit. |
Ward | Use Ward of Arceuus if unlocked and the spellbook fits. | 73 Magic, A Kingdom Divided and the correct runes. |
Spectral | Optional drain reduction while the shield is equipped. | A two-handed weapon needs a deliberate compatible switch. |
Exit | A fixed, accessible teleport. | Its actual item, charges or runes are available. |
Bring combat boosts, restoration, healing and the exit, then allocate optional switches around those essentials. For early trips, several extra food slots can be more useful than a special-attack combination you repeatedly forget while watching the souls.
Start with the Magic–Ranged–Melee combination
Cerberus opens with a rapid three-style sequence: Magic, then Ranged, then Melee. The final melee component can hit even when you are standing at a distance. Start with Magic protection, change for the Ranged attack, then for Melee, with the prayers prepared before the respective attacks launch.
After the sequence, return to your ordinary protection plan. Protect from Magic is a common baseline, but normal attacks can use other styles. Some ordinary damage after a correctly handled special does not necessarily mean the special's prayer order was wrong.
Recognise the projectiles and the boss's animation rather than watching only the inventory. Protection for these attacks needs to be active at launch. Waiting for an incoming projectile to arrive before selecting its prayer can be too late.
Do not try to force a perfectly damage-free first attempt. The useful target is recognising the special sequence while maintaining health and enough Prayer for the next event. Add more precise normal-attack responses once the major mechanics are controlled.
Souls: read positions first, colours second
Below 400 boss health, eligible soul specials bring three coloured souls from behind the skull. Each represents a different style, but their arrangement varies. They attack from west to east, so keep a stable camera orientation and read that actual sequence instead of memorising one colour order.
Soul colour | Protection | What the correct block costs |
|---|---|---|
Red | Protect from Melee. | Prayer rather than the normal unblocked 30-health hit. |
Blue | Protect from Magic. | The same drain system, with your applicable reductions. |
Green | Protect from Missiles. | The same drain system; green is not Magic. |
Read the three positions as soon as they appear. Select protection for the western soul first, then change for the middle and eastern souls as each preceding attack launches or drains your Prayer. If your camera is rotated, screen-left is not automatically west.
The souls cannot be killed to remove the mechanic. Do not spend the response window attacking them or searching for a target. Keep attention on the prepared prayer order and on any lava that appears at the same time.
How much Prayer should be ready?
Without reductions, each correctly blocked soul drains up to 30 Prayer. A spectral spirit shield reduces that to 15 while equipped; Ward of Arceuus reduces it to 20; both together reduce it to 10. This is why the same kill can have very different potion use across setups.
Reduction active at the hit | Drain per blocked soul | Conservative learner reserve before the set |
|---|---|---|
None | 30 Prayer. | About 65 or more available points. |
Ward of Arceuus | 20 Prayer. | About 45 or more. |
Spectral spirit shield | 15 Prayer. | About 35 or more. |
Both Ward and spectral | 10 Prayer. | About 25 or more. |
Those reserves allow for the fact that a soul can be blocked with the correct prayer active even when its drain empties the remaining points. You do not have to possess the full drain amount for the last hit. The extra margin is for ordinary drain and timing; do not reduce it to an exact minimum while still learning.
Restore before the souls when necessary. If the bar reaches zero during a set, a protection prayer can turn off and leave the next soul unblocked. Treat any low-Prayer dose technique as a later optimisation that requires its own practised sequence.
Ward must actually be active; owning the spell's runes or selecting the Arceuus spellbook does not keep the buff running indefinitely. Recast according to its duration. The spell's drain reduction does not make lava tiles safe.
If using spectral with a two-handed main weapon, equip a compatible one-handed option before the shield is needed. A spectral sitting in the inventory does not halve the drain. Rehearse that switch before it competes with three overhead changes.
Lava: keep moving while preserving the soul order
Below 200 health, Cerberus can place three lava pools, one targeting your position. Move to a clear tile when the cue and forming pool appear. Current pools damage the occupied tile rather than the old larger surrounding area, but choosing another pool as the destination still fails the mechanic.
The dangerous situation is an overlap: souls are about to attack while lava demands a move. Keep the three-prayer order in mind, click a clear nearby tile and continue changing protection. Do not spend the entire sequence eating while forgetting both the floor and the next soul.
Antifire can affect some sustained lava damage, but it is not a replacement for moving and does not erase the initial hit. A learner inventory should not sacrifice the core restoration plan just to stand in a mechanic that can be avoided.
If the boss is nearly dead, finish only when that action remains controlled. Souls whose attacks have already launched can still matter around the kill. Keep the relevant protection and health until the sequence resolves.
Practise one complete kill before supply-saving methods
Check task, effective Slayer level, weapon supply, health, Prayer and exit.
Enter prepared for the opening Magic–Ranged–Melee sequence.
Use the ordinary protection plan and recognise the soul threshold.
Restore to the reserve appropriate for your Ward and shield setup.
Read souls west to east and change prayers in that order.
When lava appears, move clear while preserving the prayer sequence.
After the kill, review supplies before engaging another spawn.
Ghost-skip methods delay damage around health and attack timing. They trade time, attention and potion use differently from a normal kill. They are not a guarantee that souls disappear from every attempt, and one missed threshold can restore the mechanic you tried to avoid.
Likewise, Demonic Offering and low-Prayer dose routines can reduce consumption when executed correctly, but add actions during a demanding sequence. Learn the ordinary block first. A method that saves a dose in a demonstration but causes repeated deaths on your account is not saving the resources you care about.
Rewards, task planning and account risks
Primordial, pegasian and eternal crystals upgrade different base boots; receiving a crystal is not the same as owning the completed upgrade. The smouldering stone supports infernal-tool projects. Decide which outcome matters and account for the base item and construction requirements before valuing a rare drop as a finished piece of equipment.
An Ironman's potion production is part of the cost, so Ward, weapon damage and task length deserve attention. A main can compare an equipment purchase with the full cost of learning. Neither account should assume a fixed number of kills produces a crystal or guarantees a profitable task.
Cerberus deaths are unsafe for Hardcore status and HCGIM lives. Review the carried setup, return route and actual recovery rules. UIMs must also resolve existing item-retrieval storage risks before entering another dangerous encounter.
After a session, separate missed soul prayers, empty Prayer, ordinary damage and lava hits in your notes. Change the first repeated cause. Use the Herblore guide for a potion-supply project and the Slayer planning guide to decide how much of the assignment to spend learning.
