Venenatis turns the spider encounter into a multicombat team fight. The core plan is crush damage, immediate spiderling cleanup and web placements that leave teammates room to move. Agree those jobs and the Escape Caves route before entering; stronger gear alone does not solve a blocked floor or an unplanned player attack.
Access the larger spider encounter deliberately
Venenatis lives in the Silk Chasm around level 35 Wilderness. Entry requires the medium Wilderness Diary or a specific Venenatis boss Slayer task. A normal spider assignment does not substitute for that task exception.
Unlike Spindel’s singles-plus room, the Silk Chasm is multicombat and above level-30 teleport limits. Other players can attack as a team while the boss continues. Plan a group size and equipment risk that everyone understands before travelling.
The shared boss-lair fee starts at 50,000 coins and can be deducted from the bank. It also covers the related lairs and Escape Caves under its repayment rules. Do not carry an unnecessary coin stack for entry.
Standard Ironman accounts can contribute and receive drops with other players at this boss. Loot depends on contribution; do not assume joining the room gives the same reward as completing a full solo kill, or that every participant receives an independent unique roll.
Team job | Preparation | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
Main damage | Appropriate crush weapon and a verified attack style | Players maintain damage without walking through webs. |
Spiderling cleanup | One named player with a fast or area-damage method, plus a backup | Adds disappear promptly instead of weakening everyone’s prayers. |
Web placement | Each player watches the incoming target and moves towards a sensible edge | New web coverage leaves a clear route for the group. |
Prayer and health | Restores, food and protection appropriate to distance | Nobody assumes the matching prayer solves live adds and floor damage. |
Exit call | A shared response to a threat and knowledge of the cave map | The group leaves promptly rather than waiting for a final hit. |
Risk check | Actual worn items, charges and inventory inspected at the bank | Each person knows what is protected and what can be lost. |
Travel and choose a role-sized inventory
A Wilderness crabs teleport brings you near the dark-crab spot south-east of the lair. Annakarl travel is another option with its own unlocks, followed by movement south-east. A games necklace to Corporeal Beast and travel north-east is a longer alternative. Know where the chosen method places you.
Crush melee is a practical damage plan because Venenatis has relatively low crush defence. A suitable zombie axe, bludgeon or another appropriate crush weapon can fill the role according to your account. A charged Wilderness chainmace is a stronger option with additional ether risk, rather than a mandatory entry item.
The cleanup player should bring the method they can actually execute: darts or knives for individual adds, or a suitable area option for groups of adds. Other players should retain a backup rather than assuming a single person can never miss a spawn.
Bring food, prayer restoration, run-energy support and protection against poison on the exit route. Check charged items and a usable later teleport. A level-30 teleport does not function directly inside the level-35 boss room. Enable PK Skull Prevention before using multi-target attacks.
Read the attack cycle and your own distance
Venenatis begins with a ranged sequence, then a magic sequence: eight attacks in each, moving position every four. Adjacent players receive melee normal attacks instead. Maintain Protect from Melee while reliably adjacent, and use Missiles or Magic for the corresponding distant attacks when separated.
In a mixed-position team, not everyone necessarily needs the same overhead at the same moment. A player closing the gap may face a different threat from a player already beside the spider. Make calls useful without overriding what each person sees.
The normal ranged projectile is green spit, while the normal Magic attack resembles a web. The sticky web that expands on the floor is another mechanic, requiring movement rather than a prayer change.
Large groups above ten players change the movement and special cadence. This guide’s count-based learner plan is for smaller groups; do not import the same timing into a crowded mass without reading the actual attacks.
Mechanic | Learner team response | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Spiderlings at the ranged-cycle opening | Cleanup player attacks immediately; backup checks survivors. | Adds raise damage and reduce protection effectiveness. |
Boss moves every four normal attacks | Re-establish distance and choose protection before chasing damage. | A melee overhead can be wrong while running towards the boss. |
Sticky web on the third magic attack | Targeted player places it away from the shared route, then leaves it. | Repeated health, prayer and energy drain can compromise the whole trip. |
Someone reports damage through prayer | Check adds and floor position as well as overhead. | Protection is strongest when spiderlings are removed. |
Threat call | Leave the boss and navigate the actual Escape Caves arrival point. | The arena exit does not put you directly into teleport range or safety. |
Make spiderling cleanup an explicit job
Spiderlings only have five health and take maximum hits, but leaving them alive increases Venenatis’s max hit and weakens prayers. Their own attacks drain prayer even when they deal zero damage. Small targets can therefore create a large team-wide supply problem.
A fast single-target tool is enough if used promptly. Area methods can clear several together, but only bring them when the player understands the targeting and risk. Keep skull prevention enabled and do not turn a routine add clear into an accidental player attack.
After cleanup, scan for a survivor, then return to the boss weapon. If the assigned player is forced to eat or react to a player threat, the backup must take over. A role assignment helps coordination; it does not remove everyone else’s responsibility to read the room.
Do not waste supplies trying to solve the resulting chip damage while ignoring its source. Remove adds, restore prayer and recover position, then resume damage. A more expensive armour piece does not recreate the protection lost to live spiderlings.
Web placement should preserve the group’s next move
The sticky projectile expands into a seven-by-five floor area. Move towards an edge before it arrives when the cycle gives you time, then step fully clear once placed. Avoid dropping it across the route the rest of the group is using to follow the spider.
The web repeatedly damages players and drains prayer and run energy. Being on the right overhead does not make it safe. Leave the area before eating in place, especially if your run bar is disappearing.
Aranea boots only remove the first tick of damage. They do not negate the whole web and should not be described as a mechanic skip. Carrying them adds value to the risk budget for a limited benefit.
If the room becomes awkward, reposition deliberately rather than all charging through the same web. A brief loss of damage is recoverable; several players losing run energy just before an interruption can be much harder to recover from.
Escape, reward expectations and the next trip
Leaving the Silk Chasm sends you into the multicombat Escape Caves at a random boss-lair exit point. Know how the map connects to the surface exits. Players following shortly after can arrive at the same point, so entering the caves is not a clean break from pursuit.
The caves contain aggressive monsters including poison spiders. Keep food, prayer and run energy for the journey, and travel towards a usable surface exit. Only teleport when your current Wilderness level and any Tele Block status allow it.
Loot is shared according to contribution. Voidwaker gem, fangs and other collection goals are possible outcomes, not promised returns for a particular trip length. Compare actual downtime, charges and replacement costs before calling the larger version more profitable for your group.
After banking, discuss the first failure rather than the last death animation: delayed add cleanup, web across the exit lane, wrong overhead at distance or an unfamiliar cave arrival. Improve that job before increasing everyone’s risk. Hardcore accounts should treat all of this as unsafe.
Choose the next account upgrade
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
