For a first Tormented Demon trip, fight one demon, bring two damage styles and use the fire-bomb pause to move safely and prepare the next weapon. Its protection prayer, fire shield and later accuracy window are different mechanics. Understanding which one changed is more useful than copying a large multi-demon inventory.
This guide covers post-While Guthix Sleeps demons in the Ancient Guthixian Temple. It explains the single-target method and the optional heavy hit after a shield drop; two- and three-demon prayer-flicking methods are a separate lesson.
Quest access and a sustainable two-style setup
Complete While Guthix Sleeps. A Guthixian temple teleport takes you directly to the temple. The longer route starts at Tears of Guthix: use a lit sapphire lantern to attract a light creature, descend into the chasm and follow the route to the skull entrance. Carry the actual travel items until a direct teleport is available.
Bring two combat styles, commonly melee and ranged. Demonbane weapons such as Arclight, Emberlight or the Scorching bow can be useful according to your unlocks and supplies. A magic route needs the correct spellbook, runes and gear; Dark Demonbane also requires its account unlocks.
Check charges before leaving the bank. A weapon pictured in a setup is not functional if its upkeep has run out. Use a small number of supporting switches, combat boosts, Prayer restoration, food and an emergency teleport. Leave slots for drops you intend to keep.
Tormented Demons count as greater demons on Slayer tasks. The appropriate task and helmet can improve a session, but no Slayer level or assignment replaces the actual quest access. Start without extra demons even if a video shows several stacked together.
System | Visible or practical cue | Response |
|---|---|---|
Protection prayer | Overhead changes after 150 health lost | Switch to an unprotected damage style |
Fire bombs | Brief bind, run disabled, targeted fireballs | Move to a clear tile before impact |
Fire shield drops | Shield animation clears after opening/bombs | Use the planned single heavy hit if ready |
Defenceless window | Flames on the back extinguish | Accuracy becomes guaranteed for the window |
Attack style after bombs | Follows towards you or stays at range | Read and correct your overhead |
Keep the first encounter to one target
The temple contains areas allowing different numbers of simultaneous demons. Choose a position where you can control a single opponent, and do not attack another merely because the first stops briefly after a prayer change. The demons are unaggressive until engaged, so target selection is part of preparation.
They can route around obstacles and attack under themselves with melee. If unable to reach you, a melee demon can change to magic or ranged. A convenient rock is therefore not a universal safespot. Maintain enough open ground to respond to the fire-bomb pattern.
With multiple demons, their styles and timing interact differently; a third can add repeated bombs. That method demands coordinated prayer flicks and movement. It should not be introduced accidentally during a first single-target trip.
Separate its overhead from your overhead
Your weapon must deal a style the demon is not protecting against. After losing another 150 health, it changes protection to the last style that damaged it and pauses its own attacks briefly. Use that pause to equip the alternative and resume.
Your protection prayer is based on the demon’s attack, independently of the symbol above its head. A demon praying against melee does not imply it is attacking with melee. Keep the current attack cue in view while managing your damage switch.
After a fire-bomb special, it changes attack style. If it approaches, expect melee. If it remains at range, expect the other distance style from the one used before. Following a melee phase, magic versus ranged needs a read and correction rather than a guaranteed guess.
If your count or prediction fails, favour the actual animation and projectile. Do not stay on a presumed style while taking repeated damage because an earlier guide’s fixed sequence said it should be different.
Fire bombs: account for the disabled run
Roughly every ten ordinary attacks, the demon briefly binds you and disables run, then drops fire bombs on and around your position. You have a short movement window once the bind ends. Identify a clear destination and move promptly; the adjacent bomb means the nearest-looking tile is not always safe.
Open floor gives more escape choices than a wall or obstacle. Avoid beginning the fight in a corner where the pattern can leave only awkward destinations. If using Ctrl-click to run, make sure the in-game setting actually enables that behaviour; otherwise deliberately re-enable run or choose a reachable safe tile.
Bombs still land after the demon dies. Keep the movement response even when the health bar empties. Collecting a valuable drop is not a reason to stand on the targeted square and take a final explosion.
After moving, check your protection for the new attack style before returning to damage. The special creates a useful weapon window, but surviving its floor attack remains the first action.
Use the shield drop for one deliberate heavy attack
The fire shield normally reduces damage from ordinary non-exempt weapons by 20%; demonbane and abyssal weapons have favourable exceptions. The shield drops after the opening interaction and after fire bombs, remaining down until your next attack. This gives time to select the intended weapon.
Certain slower attacks receive a one-hit damage bonus and a faster attack cycle during that opening: melee weapons set to crush, heavy ranged weapons such as crossbows or ballistae, and actual cast spells. Powered staff attacks do not belong to that spell category.
A slower crush weapon or an Accurate crossbow/ballista can therefore be useful as a single-hit switch. Set the correct style before travelling. A heavy ranged weapon left on Rapid changes the relevant speed, while a melee weapon on slash does not receive the intended crush interaction.
You do not need this extra switch to begin learning. First dodge bombs, maintain protection and keep damage moving through the prayer changes. Add the heavy hit when there is enough attention available to use it once and return to the main weapon.
The guaranteed-accuracy window is another system
After roughly eighteen seconds of ordinary fighting, the flames on the demon’s back extinguish and attacks gain perfect accuracy. This window lasts until the first player hit after the fire-bomb special. It is separate from the shield-drop bonus.
Use a useful damage special when the accuracy window is active, provided its damage style is not being protected against. Guaranteed accuracy does not make an overhead-blocked attack a good choice. Maintain boosts and the appropriate gear so a successful hit is also worthwhile.
Do not count the absence of a splash as proof the shield is down. Track the visible flames, the fire-bomb event and the actual overhead independently. That prevents spending a one-hit opportunity on the wrong weapon and then wondering why the next heavy hit lacks the bonus.
Recurring issue | Next change |
|---|---|
Bomb damage beside walls | Fight on open ground with more valid escape tiles |
Damage stops after a pause | Read its new protection and change styles |
Heavy switch does little | Check crush/Accurate setting and whether it was the first unshielded hit |
Too many incoming attacks | Return to a single-demon area |
Correct method but trip ends early | Check charges, boosts and avoidable prayer misses |
Bank useful drops without promising a rate
Tormented synapses support demonbane upgrades, and two burning claws can be combined into the special-attack weapon. Those are long-term goals, not guaranteed outcomes from a short task. Assess ordinary supplies and your actual missed mechanics before assuming a profit benchmark applies.
Standard death recovery applies and deaths are unsafe for Hardcore accounts. Keep the return route and escape available. Aim first for a controlled kill with a clean bomb dodge and correct style changes, then improve the unshielded hit and trip length.
Choose the next account upgrade
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
