Before joining a normal Theatre of Blood learner team, agree your role, show the actual equipment and understand the recovery plan. An Entry Mode clear teaches the sequence of bosses, but Normal expects stronger coordination at Maiden, Nylocas and Verzik. The first useful goal is to perform one assigned job consistently while keeping enough supplies to finish.

This OSRS ToB Normal preparation guide covers equipment roles, team calls, supply checkpoints and the differences that matter after Entry. It is a readiness and role guide, not a replacement for each boss’s complete timing walkthrough or an advanced speed-run setup.

What changes after Entry Mode?

Part of the raid

Entry experience

Normal preparation

Retrying a room

Unlimited learning attempts with bandage support

A full team wipe ends the attempt and creates item-retrieval costs

Supplies

Bandages at the two supply checkpoints

Buy food and potions with earned chest points

Team jobs

Many mechanics can be explored gradually

Assigned freezes, damage coverage and positioning prevent problems for everyone

Solo learning

Entry supports a first solo clear

Normal has a lower scaling floor; a solo is a specialised challenge

Normal bosses do not scale their health down indefinitely as players are removed. Three or fewer players use the same lower health scale, so one player is not facing an Entry-style solo version. Begin with a learner team that has agreed to teach, rather than treating a solo Normal attempt as the automatic next step.

The six-boss order is unchanged: Maiden, Bloat, Nylocas, Sotetseg, Xarpus and Verzik. Stronger incoming pressure and stricter team responsibilities change how forgiving that familiar sequence feels. A successful Entry clear is a foundation, not a guarantee of a deathless Normal run.

Access and practical account preparation

Reach Ver Sinhaza in Morytania and confirm Normal Mode at the notice board. Priest in Peril provides access to Morytania, while Drakan’s medallion from A Taste of Hope is a useful direct transport unlock. The quest A Night at the Theatre and participating in the raid are related progression projects, not identical requirements.

For Normal learners, combat stats around the 90s are sensible preparation targets, with strong Hitpoints and Defence. These are recommendations, not a hard entrance requirement. The host may set different expectations according to team size, equipment and how much support the teacher can provide.

Ice Barrage requires 94 Magic and Ancient Magicks. That matters when you are assigned a freezing job; it does not mean every damage player must use the same spellbook. Offensive prayers also need their actual levels and unlocks. Show the team what you have instead of listing a prayer or spell you cannot yet use.

Choose the learner role with the host

A four-player group commonly divides the work into the following roles. The abbreviations and exact assignments can differ between teams, so confirm what the host means before changing your spellbook or withdrawing gear.

Role

Main responsibility

Preparation consequence

Melee damage, often mdps

Melee-focused damage and the assigned Nylocas area

Suitable melee weapons; an experienced setup may use Arceuus utility

Ranged damage, often rdps

Ranged coverage and rapid Nylocas clearing

Blowpipe and any agreed area-damage option; spellbook chosen with the team

North or melee freezer

Assigned northern Maiden freezes and agreed additional spawns

Ancient Magicks, Ice Barrage runes and adequate Magic accuracy

South or mage freezer

Assigned southern Maiden freezes and Magic coverage at Nylocas

Ancient casting setup and a clear backup-freeze call

In the common four-player arrangement, the north freezer may also do substantial melee work during Nylocas while the south freezer concentrates on Magic. That is an assignment, not permission to ignore an uncovered target when the team asks for help. State which backup action you can perform.

A new learner should bring a simple setup that can cover the necessary styles, with remaining inventory space used for supplies. Do not copy an experienced specialist’s reduced switches until you understand which jobs that specialist expects teammates to cover.

Maiden: assign the freezes before entering

Maiden with red Nylocas moving toward her during a Theatre of Blood encounter

Maiden’s red Nylocas appear at the 70%, 50% and 30% health thresholds. In Normal, letting them reach her both heals the boss and increases the pressure of later attacks. The team should identify who freezes each spawn group and who damages the frozen targets.

Freezers need the correct spell selected, sufficient runes and an actual Magic-accuracy setup. Wearing the right staff while leaving heavy negative-Magic pieces equipped can still undermine the job. Check the complete switch before starting, and leave inventory room to change equipment cleanly.

For a first learner role, know your starting tile, the spawn names the teacher uses and the call for a missed freeze. Announce a splash or late cast immediately so the backup can react. Do not hide the mistake while continuing to attack Maiden; the incoming Nylocas is now the more urgent team problem.

Other players follow the damage call and avoid standing in blood. Do not attempt a faster threshold skip or an advanced stacking tactic just because it appeared in a speed-run video. The group must agree the same plan.

Equipment: cover functions before expensive upgrades

A suitable melee weapon, a charged blowpipe or other agreed Ranged weapon, and a usable Magic option cover different jobs. An abyssal tentacle, for example, is a practical melee direction for some learner setups; it does not reproduce a scythe’s reach or damage pattern. Check the attack speed of the weapon you actually use.

Elite Void can simplify style switches if you have earned it and keep the required set pieces equipped. Other coherent armour setups also work according to the role and teacher’s expectations. Avoid mixing pieces until an outfit bonus silently disappears or a Magic switch becomes too inaccurate.

Confirm the team’s defence-reduction weapons, poison or venom application for Verzik’s purple Nylocas, and who supplies Dawnbringer’s special attacks. A weapon that can perform a job is useful only if someone has been assigned to use it. Do not require every learner to purchase every specialist item without checking the team’s coverage.

Spellbooks are another equipment decision. Ancients for freezing, Arceuus support and Lunar support are different plans. Withdraw the correct runes and verify the rune pouch, rather than arriving on one book with supplies for another.

Nylocas: keep your area and switch discipline

Grey Nylocas need melee damage, green need Ranged and blue need Magic. During the waves, your team divides coverage to stop pillars and players being overwhelmed. Know the side or section you are covering, where the other players stand and which targets the teacher wants prioritised.

Do not chase every target into a teammate’s area while leaving your assigned pillar uncovered. Use the agreed fast weapon and identify the next colour before clicking. When a large Nylocas splits, reassess the smaller colours instead of continuing with the same weapon automatically.

Nylocas Vasilias being fought by a team inside the Theatre of Blood

At Vasilias, change protection with its form, switch to the matching damage style and attack again. Grey is melee, green Ranged and blue Magic. A late damage switch is recoverable; repeated wrong prayers while trying to maximise attacks can quickly remove a player from the room.

Plan both supply chests

Normal supply chests appear after Bloat and Sotetseg. They use earned points, so Entry’s guaranteed bandage layout is not the plan. Check what your performance has actually provided and buy around the resource you are short of.

As reference costs, a four-dose stamina costs one point, a Prayer potion two, and a brew or super restore three. Unspent points can carry to the later chest. The useful question is whether the next encounters need health, Prayer, run energy or stat repair, not whether every available point can be spent immediately.

After a boss dies, health, Prayer, run and special energy refill, but drained combat stats do not automatically recover. A brew-drained damage stat therefore still needs attention. Keep restores available and check the next room’s boost before crossing its barrier.

Use a simple bank checklist: charged weapons, ammunition, correct runes, combat boosts, healing, restoration and the agreed escape method. Remove optional switches that you cannot use reliably. Discuss a supply shortage before entering the next boss, while the team can still plan around it.

Agree the calls for the remaining bosses

At Bloat, follow the group’s entry direction and down-time limit; do not enter line of sight or add a late hit while the others retreat. At Sotetseg, distinguish small prayer projectiles from the large shared ball, and agree who leads the maze route. At Xarpus, use the team’s assigned area and stop attacks when the final stare makes your position unsafe.

For Verzik phase 1, agree Dawnbringer order and pillar use. Phase 2 needs the planned spacing so urnbombs and lightning do not punish the whole group. Learn the movement rhythm for your weapon, rather than importing the timing of a different attack speed.

In phase 3, know who is tanking, where you stand for yellow pools and how the green ball is handled. Do not drag exploding Nylocas or the final tornado through teammates. If you are unexpectedly targeted and cannot perform the tank movement, tell the teacher immediately and follow the agreed recovery call.

Escape, wipes and account rules

Ordinary teleports are blocked inside the Theatre. An escape crystal is the supported emergency exit item, sold by the Mysterious Stranger outside for 75,000 coins. Buy and understand it before entry if it is part of your plan; a house tablet in the inventory does not provide the same exit.

If you die while teammates survive, you wait outside the current fight and can continue if they clear it. If the whole team dies in Normal, the attempt ends and items must be reclaimed for 100,000 coins. Reclaim them before risking another dangerous death elsewhere, which can permanently destroy items left in that retrieval service.

Hardcore status is lost on a death even if teammates finish the room. Unsafe disconnects also have death consequences; closing the client is not a substitute for a planned exit. Ultimate Ironmen need a separate inventory and deathbank plan. Ordinary Ironmen can raid with others under raid loot rules, while Group Ironman prestige needs its own check.

Your first-team readiness check

  1. Show the exact gear and unlocked prayers to the teacher.

  2. Confirm your Maiden freeze or damage job, Nylocas coverage and spellbook.

  3. Identify the team’s poison, defence-reduction and Dawnbringer plan.

  4. Pack usable supplies and understand the two chest checkpoints.

  5. Know the main calls, escape limits and retrieval cost before starting.

After the attempt, review one job you performed and one mistake to improve. Repeating a stable learner assignment builds more useful experience than changing roles and equipment after every death. The OSRS PvM progression guide can help choose a missing account unlock; once preparation is covered, focused team practice becomes the next upgrade.
