Skotizo converts a completed dark totem into one boss attempt. The important decisions happen before entry: bring a workable altar weapon, plan the prayer change while moving and understand that leaving the arena costs the attempt. This guide prioritises a controlled first kill over expensive switches.

Fighting Skotizo inside the arena with an awakened altar visible

Build a dark totem and commit to one attempt

Collect the dark totem base, middle and top from eligible monsters in the Catacombs of Kourend, then combine them into a completed dark totem. Use it on the central altar in the Catacombs to enter Skotizo’s arena. A totem piece on its own is not an entry item.

One completed totem is consumed on entry. If you teleport out or die, a fresh totem is needed for another attempt. You cannot bank midway and return to the same kill. Items left on the arena floor are lost when you leave, so check loot before exiting.

A Slayer assignment is not required. Skotizo can benefit from an eligible black demon or greater demon assignment; location-restricted assignments still need their own conditions to be satisfied. Do not assume a Slayer helmet bonus applies simply because the enemy is a demon.

Treat death as unsafe, including for Hardcore Ironman. Prepare supplies, a functioning teleport and the actual weapon you intend to use before sacrificing the totem.

Practical plan

Important limitation

Entry

One completed dark totem

Consumed when entering; leaving ends the attempt.

Main weapon

Arclight or Emberlight if available

Check Arclight charges. Equipping Arclight requires 75 Attack; that is not a boss access requirement.

Without that weapon

A strong suitable alternative plus an altar plan

Altars take longer and reduce ordinary weapon damage more heavily.

Defence

Melee gear with sensible Magic defence

The boss can still use Magic while you are in melee distance.

Supplies

Food, prayer restoration, combat boosts and a usable escape

You must finish the trip without banking inside the encounter.

Why demonbane weapons make learning easier

Arclight and Emberlight are particularly useful because they help with the boss and destroy an awakened altar in one hit. This altar interaction applies regardless of your other gear or stats once you can use the weapon. It is not a universal property of anything described as demonbane.

Darklight and Silverlight do not provide the same one-hit altar solution. Neither do demonbane spells or a scorching bow simply because they are effective against demons. Plan according to the exact weapon you have, rather than copying the name of an equipment category.

A first kill without Arclight or Emberlight is possible, but clearing altars is less forgiving and often consumes more time and supplies. If your account can obtain and use a charged Arclight, that preparation can be more valuable than buying a small armour upgrade.

A ranged route is another option, using distance and Protect from Magic. It still needs an explicit response to awakened altars; standing far away does not remove their damage reduction.

The basic melee prayer plan

When standing next to Skotizo and using melee, Protect from Melee is a practical default. Wear equipment with sensible Magic defence because the boss can also cast Magic. Protection is a tool for the current position, not a prayer you activate once and forget for the whole arena.

When you run away to an awakened altar, switch to Protect from Magic. Skotizo does not chase you around the room to make melee attacks; at distance, Magic is the relevant threat. Keep that protection active during the run and altar hit, then return to the close-range plan when you re-engage.

Restore prayer while there is still enough left for the next movement sequence. Running towards a distant altar with nearly empty prayer creates an avoidable damage spike just as your attention moves away from the boss.

Choose a clear route and click the altar itself once in reach. After it dies, confirm that your next click targets Skotizo rather than another ground tile or an unnecessary summoned enemy.

Arena state

Learner action

Why

An awakened altar appears

Plan a prompt clear while watching health and prayer.

Active altars reduce your damage against Skotizo.

Several altars are active

Prioritise reducing their number rather than forcing low-damage boss attacks.

Ordinary weapons lose 25% damage per altar, up to complete protection.

Using Arclight or Emberlight

Use the one-hit altar interaction and return to the boss.

These weapons still lose damage per active altar, but at 15% each rather than 25%.

Running to an altar

Protect from Magic during the journey.

Your distance changes which incoming attack you need to handle.

Late summoned enemies

Maintain the boss-and-altar plan unless an immediate survival problem requires attention.

Repeatedly clearing replaceable adds can waste supplies and delay the kill.

Do not let the altar mechanic stall the kill

There are four altar positions around the arena. Each awakened altar reduces the damage you deal to Skotizo. With ordinary weapons, four active altars can stop your damage entirely. Arclight and Emberlight reduce the penalty but do not make active altars irrelevant.

For learning, clear altars before several accumulate. Advanced players sometimes tolerate a chosen number to save travel time, but the worthwhile threshold depends on weapon damage, positioning and supply use. A rigid “always ignore this many” rule is poor advice for an unfamiliar account.

If you see repeated low or zero damage, look around the arena before blaming accuracy. A defence-reducing special does not remove the altar mechanic. Resolve the protection, return to your position and then judge how the weapon performs.

Do not spend a long special-attack sequence while multiple altars are reducing your output. Stabilise the arena first; optional damage optimisation comes after the basic mechanic is under control.

Late summons, loot and the next totem

As Skotizo becomes low on health, reanimated demons can join the encounter. A dark ankou can also appear while an altar is active. Avoid turning the last part of the kill into an endless add-clearing exercise: your main progression remains damaging the boss and keeping altars manageable.

Watch health while moving, keep the right protection for your distance and use food early enough to survive an unexpected combination of hits. If the kill is no longer recoverable, teleport. Losing a totem is preferable to losing equipment and spending more time recovering.

After the kill, collect the loot before leaving the instance. Hard clues and ancient shards are useful rewards, while valuable uniques and the pet remain longer-term possibilities. Do not assume the chest of rewards will include a replacement full totem.

Before the next attempt, repair the specific failure. Long altar runs suggest a clearer route and faster target selection; Magic hits while travelling suggest a missed prayer change; stalled boss damage suggests too many active altars. Once those are consistent, compare damage upgrades over several kills.

Choose the next account upgrade

Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
