Sarachnis teaches a repeatable bossing loop: protect against melee while beside the boss, switch to Ranged protection when the web creates distance, then close the gap and restore melee protection. Add a manageable plan for the Magic minions and you have the basis of a controlled first kill.
This OSRS Sarachnis guide covers a learner's crush setup, the Forthos Dungeon route, web timing, minion decisions and trip management. It also explains what aranea boots change, how the optional instance works and which rewards can support account progression. It does not assume that you already own a rare drop from the boss.
Reach the lair with the right tools
Sarachnis lives in the burial tomb in the southern part of Forthos Dungeon in Hosidius. Enter through the dungeon entrance across the river east of the Forthos Ruin, then work toward the southern tomb. Check the dungeon map and your return route before starting a long trip.
Bring a knife or a weapon that can slash through the webs on the route, unless using the relevant aranea-boots benefit. A crush-only weapon does not automatically provide that tool. The last thick web at the tomb can be passed without a slash weapon, but that does not remove earlier route webs.
Xeric's talisman's Glade teleport is a useful arrival near the eastern entrance. The Lunch by the Lancalliums teleport from Kharedst's memoirs or the Book of the Dead is another option when unlocked. A player-grown spirit tree nearby requires its own preparation. Choose an option your account actually has, along with a separate escape.
Use the web's peek option to check the room before entering the public encounter. An occupied room can change the trip you planned. Ironmen seeking their own ordinary loot should avoid assuming that fighting alongside unrelated players works like a personal boss instance.
Prepare for a first kill, then a longer trip
Sarachnis has no Slayer-level requirement for an ordinary kill. Roughly mid-60s or better melee stats, useful defensive equipment and 43 Prayer are practical learner targets rather than formal entrance requirements. More Magic level and Magic defence can help against the blue minions; neither replaces protecting against the boss itself.
Bring food, Prayer restoration, combat boosts you can afford and a working exit. Start with one kill and review the cost before trying to stay for an entire inventory. The boss's hits can be substantial when unprotected, so low health is a reason to act instead of waiting for another mechanic.
Equipment choice | Practical option | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
Primary weapon | A suitable crush weapon, such as a dragon mace or Sarachnis cudgel. | The actual Attack requirement and selected crush style. The cudgel needs 65 Attack and is not a guaranteed first drop. |
Off-hand | A defender or shield that fits your levels and goal. | A two-handed weapon replaces it. Compare the complete setup. |
Body and legs | A balance of melee damage and useful Magic defence. | How much damage the Magic minions cause on your account, rather than copying a pure Strength-bonus list. |
Boots | Ordinary suitable boots, or aranea boots if available. | Aranea boots remove the web bind; their price is an upgrade decision, not an entry fee. |
Travel tool | Knife or slash-capable weapon. | Getting through the route's webs without sacrificing the main crush setup. |
A main can buy an appropriate weapon and some supplies. An Ironman should plan the weapon's acquisition before choosing a route that depends on it. A usable lower-cost weapon, enough restoration and a clear exit are a more complete setup than one premium item with no trip budget left.
Select the intended combat style before entering. Some weapons have a crush option without using it by default. Restricted accounts must also check the XP style, particularly when switching between weapons for minions or special attacks.
The boss's attacks and the web cycle
Situation | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Beside Sarachnis, in melee range | Use Protect from Melee. | Block her standard close-range attacks instead of spending food on each exchange. |
The Hsss! web cue and relocation | Switch to Protect from Missiles. | She can attack at range while you are held away from her. |
The bind ends and the path is clear | Approach the boss and return to Protect from Melee as you re-enter her reach. | Use the protection that matches the current distance. |
A minion pulls your attention elsewhere | Recheck the boss's position and matching protection. | Focusing a minion does not stop Sarachnis from attacking. |
Without aranea boots, the web follows every four standard attacks and holds you for six ticks, about 3.6 seconds. Watch the cue rather than trying to repair a count after an interruption. Use the bound interval for a necessary food or potion action while maintaining Ranged protection.
Successful standard attacks also heal Sarachnis. Better protection can improve your kill by preventing both incoming damage and some of the boss's recovery. Repeatedly missing a switch can therefore cost more time than the health loss alone suggests.
Do not stay on Protect from Magic solely because a blue minion is alive. You need a minion solution that preserves the protection required against the boss. Moving out of melee range while chasing another target is a cue to re-evaluate the overhead.
A first-kill sequence you can repeat
Check the room and supplies. Know whether you are entering the public room or paying for an instance. Start healthy, boosted and with enough Prayer.
Establish melee range. Use the correct protection and crush attack. Keep the boss and nearby floor visible.
Respond to the web. Change to Ranged protection when the web and movement create distance. Restore supplies if necessary during the bind.
Close deliberately. Move back when free, then restore melee protection as you resume the close-range exchange.
Handle each minion wave. Decide whether to kill the Magic spawn, while continuing the boss's prayer cycle.
Finish and reassess. Collect the loot, check remaining supplies and either leave or prepare for the next spawn.
For the first trip, a clean kill with supplies left is enough. Record which part caused damage: a late web switch, moving too slowly, a Magic spawn left unchecked or insufficient defensive equipment. Fix that specific problem on the next attempt.
The boss returns roughly ten seconds after death. That gap is a short reset, not a reason to remain if the next kill is already beyond the inventory's reserve. Collect the reward and leave before the next encounter if that was your stopping rule.
Tell the two minion types apart
At 66% and 33% health, Sarachnis summons a Melee and a Magic spawn per player. Each type adds a different problem. The blue Magic spawn can keep damaging you while the boss demands Melee or Ranged protection, making it a useful first target for a learner struggling with incoming damage.
Kill the Magic spawn if leaving it alive makes the fight unsustainable. Recheck your position before turning to it: Ranged protection is appropriate while the boss cannot reach you, and Melee protection when she is beside you. Avoid treating the minion's location as a fixed safe tile regardless of where the boss has moved.
The orange Melee spawn is often manageable while you already protect from Melee beside the boss. That does not mean every account can ignore every minion indefinitely. Lower Defence, low health or several accumulated spawns can change the decision.
All remaining spawns die when Sarachnis dies. Stronger accounts may choose to finish the boss rather than spending attacks on each minion. Learn that choice from your actual sustain and damage; it is an optimisation for a working setup, not a universal first-kill instruction.
What aranea boots change
Wearing aranea boots prevents the web bind, allowing you to stay close to Sarachnis or follow immediately. This can remove much of the downtime and the need for the usual distance-based prayer switches when the boss remains in melee reach.
The boots do not make you immune to Sarachnis or her minions. If you stand where she cannot reach you, she can still use Ranged attacks. Keep protection matched to the situation instead of assuming that owning the boots permanently makes Protect from Melee correct everywhere.
Decide whether the purchase solves your current problem. If your main damage comes from an ignored Magic spawn or an empty Prayer bar, practise that part before spending most of the bank. If the ordinary cycle is already comfortable and webs are the main delay, the upgrade has a clearer purpose.
Public room, paid instance and account risks
The optional private instance is entered through the thick web and costs 25,000 coins at the standard rate. Claiming the hard Combat Achievement tier reduces the fee to 12,500. The instance ends when you leave or log out, so include the fee when comparing short trips. Payment comes from the bank.
In a group, the player Sarachnis targets affects whether she uses melee on that target or Ranged against the room. A group therefore needs coordination; another player's movement can change what you must protect against. A solo learner can avoid that extra variable.
For Ironman and Group Ironman, follow the ordinary loot and group restrictions. Being able to enter a public room does not guarantee that damage involving unrelated players leaves you eligible for the reward. A GIM group should agree on the goal and supplies instead of assuming a shared kill automatically awards everyone the same drop.
Deaths here are unsafe for HCIM status and HCGIM lives. A paid instance is not a safe practice mode. Review Items Kept on Death for the actual setup and prepare a return route. UIMs must use their own recovery and storage rules rather than ordinary bank-and-grave assumptions, especially before carrying items stored in another retrieval service.
Rewards: choose a goal beyond one lucky drop
Reward or goal | Why it can matter | Planning limit |
|---|---|---|
Sarachnis cudgel | A tradeable, non-degrading crush weapon requiring 65 Attack. | A main can buy one; an Ironman must obtain it through an eligible source. A kill does not guarantee it. |
Pristine spider silk | Upgrades an existing herb sack into a silklined herb sack. | Its progression value depends on owning the base sack; it is not ordinary cash loot. |
Giant egg sac and other supplies | Can support Herblore preparation and the wider account. | Compare the supplies actually received with food, potions, travel and instance fees. |
Clues and collection progress | Give repeat kills another purpose. | Rare rewards and a pet are chances, not a fixed number of trips. |
Track a few complete trips before estimating profit or planning a long grind. Include banking time and the input cost of maintaining your setup. For Ironmen, useful supplies and unlocks may justify a route even when there is no sale.
Use the melee training guide if damage is the next preparation project, or the Herblore guide when building the potion supply. The first milestone is a repeatable web-and-prayer cycle; extend the trip once that foundation works.
