Runecraft training is a transport and inventory problem as much as a level grind. A better pouch setup, a reliable bank teleport or an unlocked altar can improve your session more than immediately switching rune types. Decide whether you want experience, rune income, a lower-intensity routine or Guardians of the Rift rewards before buying essence.

This OSRS 1–99 Runecraft guide gives you a practical progression and explains the mechanics that change your results. Experience, rune output and profit are separate measures. More runes from equipment do not automatically mean more Runecraft experience.

These are useful milestones, not a requirement to use every route. Guardians can remain your main training method, while an account interested in income may later prefer an altar route. Keep useful quest and diary targets visible so the next level has a purpose.

Start with quest unlocks rather than unnecessary air-rune laps

Rune Mysteries opens important Runecraft progression. Enter the Abyss awards experience, provides a small essence pouch and enables pouch-repair access. Temple of the Eye unlocks Guardians of the Rift and awards a medium pouch. The minigame requires 27 Runecraft, which the completed quest's experience supports.

The Eyes of Glouphrie provides 6,000 Runecraft experience and can skip a substantial portion of early training when you meet its other requirements. Lunar Diplomacy later unlocks important utility spells and awards more experience. Choose these quests alongside your wider account goals rather than treating their rewards as available on a fresh account with no preparation.

On the Lunar spellbook, Astral Contact at 67 Magic supports remote pouch repair, Ourania Teleport at 71 helps the Ourania route, and Magic Imbue at 82 simplifies combination runes. Access to the spellbook and the Magic level are separate checks. Pack the spell runes as part of the method's supplies.

Essence pouches: capacity, repair and current colossal rules

Essence pouches carry additional essence for a trip. They are different from a rune pouch, which stores spell runes. Fill essence pouches while banking and empty them at the altar when you have inventory space; check that all the essence was crafted before teleporting away.

Creating a colossal pouch requires an abyssal needle, all four ordinary pouches in their non-degraded states, unboosted 25 Runecraft and unboosted 56 Crafting. It is not restricted to level 85; that level unlocks its full 40-essence capacity.

The colossal pouch replaces the separate pouches rather than adding another container on top. Its lower-level capacities account for the inventory spaces it saves. Obtain and repair the component pouches before attempting the combination, and do not assume an ordinary needle works.

Ordinary pouches above small and the colossal pouch degrade with use. Repair them through the Dark Mage, remotely through Astral Contact where available, or through Apprentice Cordelia's paid service. Cordelia's service costs 25 abyssal pearls to unlock and one pearl per repair. Continued neglect reduces capacity and can eventually destroy a pouch.

Keep repair inside your session calculation. A high-rate route that quietly stops to repair after several trips is slower than its altar-only number. An appropriate lantern or cape can change that maintenance requirement, but only when its actual conditions are met.

Guardians of the Rift: prepare a useful first inventory

Guardians of the Rift arena in the Temple of the Eye

Guardians of the Rift is a non-combat minigame unlocked by Temple of the Eye. Bring a pickaxe and your available essence pouches. Bring a chisel if creating guardians. Use a suitable official world and inspect the current activity state rather than assuming every world has identical entry rules.

You gather guardian fragments, convert them into guardian essence, craft at active runic altars and deliver the resulting guardian stones to the Great Guardian. Charged cells support barriers and guardians that protect the objective. Winning requires both contribution and defence, not simply crafting as many personal runes as possible.

At 56 unboostable Agility, larger guardian remains become accessible. This is helpful but not required to start the activity. Temporary portals to huge remains provide guardian essence directly; those are a different feature from the ordinary fragment nodes and the active altar portals.

The Guardians loop, step by step

Player converting guardian fragments into essence at the Guardians of the Rift workbench
  1. Prepare during the opening phase. Gather fragments and the cells needed for your planned contribution.

  2. Make guardian essence. Use the workbench and fill eligible essence pouches.

  3. Choose an active altar you can access. Only one elemental and one catalytic portal are normally active at a time.

  4. Craft and charge. Imbue your essence and charge a cell where appropriate.

  5. Return stones to the Great Guardian. Do not keep them in the inventory while beginning another cycle.

  6. Use cells productively. Support barriers or guardians according to the arena's needs.

  7. Watch temporary essence portals and contribution balance. Adapt instead of repeating an unavailable altar click.

Cosmic, law, death and blood portal access also requires Lost City, Troll Stronghold, Mourning's End Part II and Sins of the Father respectively. Reaching the Runecraft level does not replace those quests. Unlocking a useful catalytic altar expands your options when the active choice changes.

The large completion-experience reward currently requires at least 300 total energy during the game. Older advice using 150 is outdated. Each 100 elemental or catalytic energy supports its corresponding reward point, with a chance to round the remainder up. One elemental and one catalytic point are consumed together for a Rewards Guardian search.

Balance your contribution rather than accumulating only one type and expecting unlimited searches. Defensive cell actions can provide energy too. Follow the arena state, keep the guardian protected and review your result after a game before changing your whole route.

Reward upgrades: separate runes, points and experience

Raiments of the Eye increase crafted rune output. Each piece provides a 10% bonus, with another 20% for the full set, giving 60% total. They do not add 60% Runecraft experience. The full set costs 1,350 abyssal pearls: 400 for the hat, 350 each for top and bottoms, and 250 for boots.

The abyssal needle supports the colossal pouch, while the lantern provides log-dependent benefits. Choose upgrades according to the methods you intend to use after Guardians. A player planning profitable altar crafting values rune output differently from someone who only needs a short quest requirement.

The abyssal lantern is no longer limited entirely to Guardians. Current effects that apply to ordinary runecrafting also work outside the minigame. For example, a redwood lantern prevents pouch degradation and includes a 5% base-rune output benefit; point-related effects remain relevant to Guardians.

Lighting the lantern requires six appropriate logs, a tinderbox and the unboostable Firemaking level for that log type. Redwood needs 90 Firemaking, magic 75 and blisterwood 62. Blisterwood increases blood-rune output; magic increases rune output generally. Only one log configuration is active, so choose the relevant effect rather than adding every listed bonus together.

Lava runes: fast, active and sensitive to preparation

Lava runes become available at 23 Runecraft. At the Fire Altar, use essence and at least the corresponding quantity of earth runes. A binding necklace ensures successful combination crafting; monitor its remaining uses and replace it before it interrupts a trip.

Magic Imbue removes the need to consume an earth talisman for the combination process. It does not replace the earth runes or binding necklace. Without the spell, prepare the appropriate talisman-based method instead of expecting the same inventory and costs.

A repeatable banking route is central to the method. Set your bank layout for essence, pouches, jewellery and necklace replacements, then practise several complete trips. Count banking, spellcasting, pouch emptying, repairs and teleport charges in the comparison.

Do not buy thousands of supplies based on the highest advertised rate before testing the clicks. Solo play and paid essence-runner setups are different methods with very different costs. A runner-supported benchmark should not be presented as the ordinary solo expectation.

Ourania and daeyalt: include preparation time

The Ourania Altar converts essence into varied runes and can be used across a broad level range. Ourania Teleport, a convenient bank setup and run recovery improve the loop. Bring payment for the nearby bank and check your chosen route's requirements before beginning.

Daeyalt essence provides 50% more Runecraft experience when used in compatible methods. It requires Sins of the Father and 60 Mining to obtain through daeyalt shards. Mining those supplies takes time, so 50% more experience per essence does not automatically mean 50% faster overall training.

Use it when the lower-intensity preparation suits how you play. Record mining and crafting as separate stages, then add their time for an all-in result. Daeyalt cannot replace the dark essence fragments used at the Arceuus blood and soul altars.

Arceuus blood and soul runes

Arceuus blood crafting requires 77 Runecraft; souls require 90. Both use the dark-essence process, with 38 Mining and 38 Crafting, a pickaxe and a chisel. There is no old Arceuus favour grind to add to the requirements.

Mine dense essence blocks, darken them at the Dark Altar and chisel them into fragments. Prepare another inventory, darken it, then travel to the chosen rune altar. Craft stored fragments, chisel the remaining blocks and craft again. The method's supplies and inventory flow are different from ordinary pure-essence trips.

Useful route upgrades include relevant Agility shortcuts and Kourend & Kebos Diary benefits. The medium diary can improve dense-essence collection, while the elite diary adds blood-rune output. A suitable lantern and Raiments can improve rune yield without turning every extra rune into more experience.

Prepared benchmarks are around 36,000 Runecraft experience per hour for bloods and 44,000 for souls, with lower results when idling or taking a slower route. The method also gives some Mining and Crafting experience. Profit depends on prices, rune-output bonuses and your pace.

For example, 18,000 experience across a complete 30-minute session projects to 36,000 per hour at the same pace. If you spent another half-hour mining its essence, the complete two-stage rate is different. Choose the measure that matches the decision you are making.

Before the next training session

Check the target altar's access, pouch condition, transport charges, spellbook and run recovery. Run a small test inventory, confirm every pouch empties and verify the return teleport. Fix the slowest repeated step before paying for a larger batch of supplies or another optional upgrade.
