Choose your next OSRS quest by the problem it solves: travel, training access, equipment or a new activity. A useful early route is to build a safe basic account, unlock transport, improve combat tools and then work backwards from one medium-term goal. This guide is a priority framework for a regular members account, not a promise that every quest can be completed immediately.
Before following any quest order
Open the quest journal and record the required skills, prerequisite quests, items and combat encounters. Separate a requirement to start from a requirement to finish. Ironman supply gathering and restricted-account XP limits can change the best order substantially. A quest with no formal combat-level requirement can still place a low-Hitpoints character beside dangerous enemies.
Work backwards from the unlock you need, then group its prerequisites into manageable sessions. This order prioritises useful capabilities rather than promising one fastest route for every account.
Step 1: give the account a workable start
Do nearby beginner quests while learning banking, the world map and equipment. Cook's Assistant and The Restless Ghost are manageable early projects; check the required supplies before leaving Lumbridge. On a member account, Druidic Ritual opens Herblore. The Varrock Museum Natural History Quiz is a useful early Hunter and Slayer XP activity rather than a full quest.
For melee XP, consider Witch's House before dangerous low-Hitpoints routes, then prepare for quests such as Waterfall Quest, Fight Arena and Tree Gnome Village when you understand their encounters. Carry food and an exit option. Do not treat a veteran's level-3 quest video as a safety guarantee for a first attempt.
Step 2: make travelling easier
Unlock | Project to check | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
Spirit trees | Tree Gnome Village | Connects useful destinations without repeating long walks. |
Gnome gliders | The Grand Tree | Adds another travel network. |
Fairy rings | Progress Fairytale II after its prerequisites | The network opens before finishing the whole quest; check the precise progress needed. |
Ardougne teleport | Plague City | Unlocks the spell; casting it still has its own Magic and rune requirements. |
Varlamore | Children of the Sun | Opens the region; follow up with Twilight's Promise for its transport network. |
Do not train every requirement for a final quest reward when you only need an earlier unlock. Equally, do not assume starting a quest grants its completion reward.
Step 3: unlock the equipment or activity you will use
Your goal | Quest project | Follow-up check |
|---|---|---|
Reduce ammunition waste | Animal Magnetism | Choose the Ava's device your Ranged level supports and check recovery restrictions. |
Dragon scimitar access | Monkey Madness I | Quest access and the weapon's Attack requirement are separate checks. |
Progressive glove upgrades | Recipe for Disaster subquests | Each subquest advances the available glove tier; Barrows gloves require full completion. |
Fossil Island activities | Bone Voyage | Prepare bird-house tools and transport separately. |
Ancient Magicks | Desert Treasure I | Unlocking the book does not provide every spell's level or runes. |
Step 4: work backwards from one bigger milestone
Pick a real destination. Song of the Elves is a project for Prifddinas and the Gauntlet; Beneath Cursed Sands opens Tombs of Amascut; King's Ransom is part of the route toward Piety, with the Knight Waves Training Grounds and skill requirements still to complete. Write the destination at the top of your notes, list its prerequisites and train only the next blocking requirement.
For example, a player planning Fossil Island bird-house runs should first check Bone Voyage's prerequisites, then the Hunter and Crafting requirements of the chosen bird house, then the equipment and travel loop. Buying expensive combat armour would not remove those blockers. That is the difference between gaining levels at random and completing a useful account project.
A bank checkpoint for each session
Choose one quest or short connected chain.
Read its current quick guide, including combat and death mechanics.
Withdraw the required items, food, transport and an emergency exit appropriate to the area.
After finishing, collect the reward and actually test the new transport or equipment access.
Record the next blocking requirement, bank leftover supplies and stop at a clear checkpoint.
Common mistakes
Following an exact XP total without having completed the same quests in the same order.
Confusing a spell unlock with the Magic level needed to cast it.
Taking unavoidable XP rewards on a restricted build without checking them first.
Buying supplies for a later stage while a prerequisite quest still blocks access.
Next step: choose one unlock you will use during your next few sessions, then complete its dependency chain. For broader planning, use the Onyx beginner and progression guide.
Make the unlock usable: a Fossil Island example
Check Bone Voyage and its prerequisites in the journal before buying bird-house materials.
Choose a tier your Hunter level can place and your Crafting level can make, or obtain a ready-made house where trading is allowed.
Pack four houses or their materials, eligible seeds and the tools required for your setup.
Place and bait all four houses, unlock useful island transport and record when to return.
The quest opens access; your first complete run turns access into a routine. Use our Hunter guide for current house requirements and the travel setup guide for the return journey.
Fairy rings: an earlier stop than full quest completion
Finish Fairytale I and progress Fairytale II until permission to use the rings is granted. Its later Thieving, Farming and Herblore completion requirements are not needed for initial network access. Carry the appropriate staff unless you have earned an exemption. Some individual destinations still have additional access requirements.
