Prayer training is an investment in combat utility, but the most expensive bone is not automatically the right purchase. Choose the unlock you need, compare the complete cost of reaching it and decide how much interaction or Wilderness risk you are willing to accept.

This OSRS Prayer guide compares house altars, blessed bone shards, the Chaos altar and ensouled heads. It separates experience per bone from hourly experience and includes preparation in the calculation. Prices move, so use current purchase costs rather than a permanent coins-per-experience claim.

Choose a useful Prayer milestone first

Level 43 unlocks all three standard protection prayers: Protect from Magic at 37, Missiles at 40 and Melee at 43. These are important account milestones, but their effectiveness depends on the encounter. Some attacks require movement or other mechanics even when the relevant prayer is active.

Later offensive prayers include Piety at 70, Rigour at 74 and Augury at 77, with additional requirements and unlocks. Check the prayer's quest, training or scroll requirement before buying enough bones to reach the level. A level alone does not automatically enable every prayer shown in the interface.

Higher Prayer also increases the points restored by certain restoration potions. That can be useful, but compare the next level with your wider goals rather than training to 99 purely because it is available.

High Magic, spell unlocks and rune cost

For an ordinary account avoiding Wilderness, compare shards with a hosted gilded altar. For an Ironman, add the time spent obtaining bones, wine and other supplies. Ordinary Ironmen cannot simply use another player's house altar; Group Ironman house sharing follows its own group rules.

Use early quest rewards where they support your progression

The Restless Ghost, Priest in Peril, Recruitment Drive and Holy Grail provide 14,531 combined Prayer experience, reaching level 30 from level 1. These quests have prerequisites and some involve combat, so treat the list as useful account progression rather than four instant rewards.

Spirits of the Elid gives another 8,000 experience when its requirements are met. Quest experience reduces the number of remains you need to buy and can unlock areas needed for other methods. Record your current experience after rewards before calculating the remaining training supply.

To plan a purchase, subtract current experience from the experience required for your target. Divide that difference by the method's experience per consumed bone or shard, then round up. Add practical costs such as wine, unnoting, teleports and runes separately.

Gilded altar: keep both incense burners lit

A gilded altar gives 2.5 times ordinary burial experience by itself, three times with one lit burner and 3.5 times with both lit. For the maximum bonus, offer bones while both burners are burning. For dragon bones, that means 252 experience per bone instead of the 72 from burial.

Building the altar requires 75 Construction and is boostable with the appropriate visible boost and crystal saw. You do not need to own one if eligible to use a hosted house. Check that the host is available and the burners remain lit before committing to a large offering session.

Lighting a burner requires 30 Firemaking, a tinderbox and marrentill. The burner material does not change the maximum experience bonus, so marble burners are not a requirement for 3.5-times experience. In a hosted house, inspect the state rather than assuming the maximum bonus is always active.

At Rimmington, Phials can unnote bones for five coins each. Plan a small repeatable route between the general store and house portal, keep unnoting money available and test an offering to confirm the expected experience drop.

Manual bone-on-altar use is faster than automatic offering, but requires more attention. Compare the method you will actually perform: a maximum active rate is not the rate of an unattended automatic inventory. Superior dragon bones also require 70 Prayer to use, so they cannot be your level-1 starting material.

Blessed bone shards: a complete walkthrough

Animated demonstration of sacrificing blessed bone shards at the libation bowl

The libation bowl at the Teomat requires 30 Prayer. It consumes blessed bone shards with blessed wine: five experience per shard with ordinary blessed wine, or six with blessed sunfire wine. One jug supports 400 shards.

The complete process has two stages. First prepare the shards; then prepare wine and sacrifice the shards. A very high rate quoted for already-prepared shards does not include the time required to obtain or process them.

  1. Bring bones and a chisel. Virilis near the exposed altar can unnote bones for ten coins per item.

  2. Bless eligible bones at the exposed altar. Check that the bone type can be blessed.

  3. Break blessed bones into shards. The number produced depends on the bone type.

  4. Prepare wine. Use ordinary wine, or add two sunfire splinters per jug before blessing it for the sunfire version.

  5. Bless wine at the exposed altar. Prepare only what you intend to use; blessed wine cannot be banked.

  6. Fill the libation bowl and sacrifice. Keep shards and enough Prayer points available.

  7. Restore Prayer as needed. Use the nearby Shrine of Ralos or another deliberately budgeted restoration option.

Each sacrifice uses up to 100 shards and drains two Prayer points. Automatic offering is slower than repeated manual clicks. Fast offering also means frequent Prayer restoration, so your level and chosen restoration route affect the overall session.

Shards also come from activities such as calcified-rock Mining, Hunters' Rumours, some Varlamore rewards and Vale Totems. They can provide useful banked Prayer experience while developing other skills. Count that gathering time when comparing complete training methods.

A dragon-bone example you can check

One blessed dragon bone produces 58 shards. At five experience per shard, that is 290 experience; at six, it is 348. This is more experience per bone than a fully lit gilded altar, but it adds processing, wine and restoration.

Using 1,000 dragon bones

Prayer experience

Extra inputs to budget

Gilded altar, both burners lit

252,000

Unnoting, travel and burner supplies where applicable

58,000 shards with blessed wine

290,000

145 jugs, processing and restoration

58,000 shards with blessed sunfire wine

348,000

145 jugs, 290 sunfire splinters, processing and restoration

The example assumes all 1,000 bones are processed or offered, without material-saving effects. It is an experience calculation, not a current price recommendation. To find the better purchase, divide each complete route's total cost by its experience.

Sunfire wine adds 20% experience per shard compared with ordinary blessed wine. That does not mean 20% faster complete training if preparing the wine or restoring Prayer adds time. Test the route that matches your supplies and preferred interaction.

Chaos altar: understand the average and the risk

Chaos Temple in the Wilderness where bones can be offered at the altar

The Chaos altar is in level-38 Wilderness, in a multi-combat area. It offers the same 3.5-times experience as a fully lit gilded altar, plus a 50% chance that an offering does not consume its bone. Saved bones can be offered again.

Over many offerings, that produces an average of twice as many offerings per consumed bone. For dragon bones, the long-run average is therefore 504 experience per bone consumed before considering losses. It does not mean every bone produces exactly two offerings or every inventory doubles.

Player killers can interrupt training and take carried items. Bring a deliberately limited load and include lost bones, travel and interruptions when comparing costs. Noted bones make longer trips possible but increase the value exposed. A theoretical saving on bones does not remove the need for a risk budget.

Choose a return route and understand Wilderness teleport restrictions before starting. A normal bank teleport that works elsewhere may not work at the altar's Wilderness level. Test the route with a small load rather than carrying your full training budget on the first trip.

Hardcore and other restricted accounts need to consider the consequences for their mode before choosing this method. A non-Wilderness alternative may fit your goal better even when its nominal experience per bone is lower.

Ensouled heads: compare the full spell-and-combat loop

Reanimate eligible ensouled heads near the Dark Altar and defeat the reanimated creature for Prayer experience. Different head groups require different reanimation spells and Magic levels. Match the purchased head to the spell you can actually cast.

Bring the correct runes, combat equipment, food where needed and a convenient return route. Fairy ring cis is a useful access option when unlocked. Combat speed matters: a higher-value head is not necessarily faster for an account that struggles to kill the reanimated monster.

Include the head price, spell runes, supplies and travel in cost per experience. Market volume can be limited, so test a small purchase rather than assuming a large order fills at the displayed guide price. Rare or expensive heads should not be selected solely because their experience per kill is larger.

During suitable Slayer tasks, freshly dropped heads can also be reanimated locally under the relevant conditions. That can add Prayer progress to a session, but does not turn every banked head into a spell you can cast anywhere.

Offering spells and passive tools

After A Kingdom Divided, the upgraded Arceuus spellbook provides offering spells. Demonic Offering requires 84 Magic and processes eligible ashes; Sinister Offering requires 92 Magic and processes eligible bones. They require their spell runes, including wrath runes, so access and supply costs can be significant for an Ironman.

These spells can fit alongside appropriate Slayer or other combat activities. Compare the extra Prayer experience with rune cost and interaction. Automatically scattering ashes with a passive tool and manually offering them with a spell are different reward choices.

A charged bonecrusher gives half normal burial experience for eligible bone drops, or full burial experience with elite Morytania Diary. The ash sanctifier similarly has half or full scattering experience according to the relevant Kourend & Kebos Diary benefit. Neither gives house-altar multipliers simply because it processes the same remains.

The Ectofuntus offers four times normal burial experience, but requires bone processing and slime. Diary support can improve its convenience. Compare the full route with shards rather than choosing it only from the multiplier.

For example, 300,000 experience gained across 45 minutes of preparation and training projects to 400,000 per hour. Quoting only the final offering minutes would describe a different stage. Record which figure you are using before comparing another method.

Before you start

Confirm the target prayer's extra unlocks, calculate the remaining experience and test one small batch. Verify the experience drop, travel route, wine or burner state and restoration supplies. Once the complete route works, buy or prepare the larger batch needed for your target.
