For a first Phantom Muspah kill, use ranged against its ranged form, control its melee form with distance or freezes, and bring a crossbow with enchanted sapphire bolts for the prayer shield. Move off the spike that appears beneath you on transformations, and use a solid spike as cover for the large shockwave before the shield.
This guide covers the repeatable solo boss after Secrets of the North, which is stronger than the quest version. The default learning plan prioritises a clean completion; precise step-back timing, lightning safespots and shield skips are separate optimisations.
Unlock the route and check both damage setups
Complete Secrets of the North. Reach Weiss using icy basalt, a house Weiss teleport or the boat route, enter the Salt Mine and continue into Ghorrock Dungeon, then head south. The frozen-tablet ring of shadows route is a later convenience requiring Desert Treasure II and Duke’s tablet, not a prerequisite for Muspah.
Bring a reliable ranged weapon, appropriate ammunition and a small magic switch if using two styles. A crossbow is particularly useful because it can fire the enchanted sapphire bolts needed for an efficient shield response. Check the exact bolt type is compatible with the weapon.
A powered staff can provide straightforward magic damage in the melee form. Wind spells are another current option, with an elemental weakness to exploit when the actual spell and supporting gear are suitable. A powered staff does not automatically cast wind magic. Gear rankings depend on the complete setup, so do not buy a named weapon solely because an old table labels it best.
Choose the spellbook around the method. Ancient ice spells offer freezing; Arceuus offers thralls, corruption and Ward of Arceuus. You cannot use both sets of utility simultaneously without an appropriate spellbook-switching arrangement. For the first kill, choose one workable plan and carry its runes, food, Prayer restoration, boosts and emergency teleport.
Situation | Default response |
|---|---|
Ranged form | Ranged damage; Protect from Missiles by default |
Purple magic wind-up | Change to Protect from Magic immediately |
Melee form | Keep distance or freeze; use your planned damage style |
Transformation slam | Move off the new spike beneath you |
Large central shockwave | Shelter behind a solid spike |
Prayer shield | Crossbow with sapphire bolts (e); keep defensive prayers working |
Ranged form: the magic cue is an early switch
Ordinary ranged damage is calculated when the attack begins, so keep Protect from Missiles active rather than wait for an arrow to arrive. Muspah occasionally stands up and charges a purple magic orb. Change to Protect from Magic as soon as that wind-up begins.
A late switch while the magic projectile is travelling can reduce damage but still leave you corrupted. Corruption drains Prayer over time, creating a second problem after the missed cue. Check the bar and restore it before it empties; Ward of Arceuus is an optional response if you selected that spellbook.
After the magic attack resolves, return to the default ranged protection. Keep the switches distinct from your own weapon changes: the boss’s current form determines your damage plan, while its actual attack determines the overhead.
Transformations create spikes around the room and on your position. Move onto a clear tile promptly. Taking spike damage also heals Muspah, so a stationary damage race can lengthen the fight as well as consume food.
Melee form: use a repeatable control method
The melee form is more vulnerable to magic and becomes more dangerous if allowed to remain stationary and chain attacks. Use the freeze setup when it lands, keep distance and resume damage. Freezes last less time here than their usual duration, so watch the boss moving rather than assume a standard full freeze timer.
If freezes fail or you chose another spellbook, kite around clear space while attacking when possible. Leave a route around the large boss and spike clusters. A broad circuit works better than clicking into a tight corner and discovering there is no path past it.
The step-back method can make correctly protected melee attacks deal zero when the boss was chasing at the required time. It relies on the five-tick cycle and precise movement; it is not simply “move one tile whenever convenient.” Learn it separately after ordinary kiting is controlled.
Form switches depend on damage and, after the first transformation, enough separate damaging hits. Thrall damage generally does not advance those ordinary switch conditions. Read the actual transformation instead of force a memorised number of weapon attacks regardless of hits.
Resolve lightning and homing spikes without filling the arena
The two mid-fight specials are lightning clouds and homing spikes; the starting form determines which occurs first. For lightning, avoid the travelling clouds while preserving space for the next phase. A tile shown safe in a demonstration must be identified exactly and left free of transformation spikes beforehand.
For homing spikes, keep moving through clear ground or use grouped solid spikes as a barrier. The moving spikes cannot travel diagonally or pass through idle spikes. Do not tuck behind a single shape without checking whether the pursuers can route around its edge.
Homing spikes now stop after a shorter duration than in early guides and end when Muspah enters the shielded form. Continue to watch their actual movement. A damage push can shorten exposure, but it does not justify standing on an approaching spike while waiting for the transition.
Prayer shield: cover first, sapphire bolts second
Below 127 health, Muspah moves to the centre and releases a large shockwave. Get behind a solid spike before changing equipment. The prayer shield that follows is a separate task; equipping the right bolts while exposed to the wave does not solve the first danger.
Use the crossbow with sapphire bolts (e) to drain the shield much faster when their effect activates. Keep ranged protection ready and respond early to the purple magic wind-up as before. Muspah’s attacks are faster in this section, leaving less time to return to Missiles after magic.
Smite and corruption can speed shield removal. Smite replaces your defensive overhead, so learners should first complete this phase with the bolt effect and correct protection. Add timed Smite only when your own attacks are offset from the boss’s damage checks.
Once the shield breaks, return to damaging Muspah and move off the large new spike set. More spikes appear as the ending continues. Finish from open ground instead of spam-click the boss while your route closes.
Repeated problem | What to change |
|---|---|
Magic hit followed by Prayer drain | Switch on the purple wind-up, not late in flight |
Melee drains every food slot | Freeze or maintain distance; stop stationary trading |
Shield feels endless | Check sapphire bolts are equipped and compatible |
Death at low boss health | Solve shockwave cover before focusing the shield |
Spikes heal the boss repeatedly | Move after transformation and keep a clear escape route |
Recovery and a useful first-kill target
Unprotected items move to a grave outside the instance if you die; items dropped on the floor are not a safe storage method. This is an unsafe Hardcore encounter. Keep a return kit ready rather than enter another dangerous fight while recovering.
For the next attempt, identify the first mistake that forced emergency eating. A clean purple-prayer response, controlled melee phase and safe shield entry are more useful first milestones than a lucky shield skip. Ancient essence, ancient icons and venator shards are potential account goals, but no rare drop or profit rate is guaranteed by completing a short trip.
Choose the next account upgrade
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
