For a first Moons of Peril run, prioritise useful melee defence, bring the right attack style for each Moon and learn to follow the highlighted floor glyph. Protection prayers do not block these bosses' attacks. That makes equipment, movement and the supplies prepared inside Neypotzli more important than copying an ordinary overhead-prayer boss routine.
This OSRS Perilous Moons guide covers the repeatable three-boss encounter, its quest access, a first supply loop and the special attacks that interrupt normal combat. It also explains the Lunar Chest and account differences. The aim is a controlled first full chest, followed by a repeatable route that fits your own levels.
Quest access and useful preparation
The Perilous Moons quest introduces Cam Torum and Neypotzli in Varlamore. Complete it to unlock ordinary repeat boss runs. The quest itself includes fighting the three Moons, so prepare the combat and resource requirements before treating it as a quick access task.
Access or preparation | Requirement or target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Quest prerequisites | Twilight's Promise, including Children of the Sun. | Varlamore arrival and the quest chain are separate from combat readiness. |
Required starting skills | 48 Slayer; 20 Hunter, Fishing and Runecraft; 10 Construction. | These are the quest's listed skill gates, not suggested melee levels. |
Local potion preparation | 38 Herblore for moonlight potions. | Allows a self-supplied boost-and-Prayer routine inside Neypotzli. |
Local cooked supplies | 30 Cooking for the basic dungeon foods. | Higher gathering and Cooking levels improve how useful the food is. |
Repeat-run combat preparation | About 70 Attack, Strength and Defence is a useful goal. | A recommendation, not the formal quest minimum. Lower setups can make Blood Moon much less forgiving. |
For repeat visits, plan your route to Cam Torum, enter the settlement and continue to the northern ruins and Neypotzli. An unlocked quetzal landing site helps the journey. Keep an emergency teleport and use an arrival route your account can repeat rather than assuming every transport option is already available.
Other players can be visible in the boss rooms, but the boss health and progress are personal. You must complete your own damage requirement; standing beside a stronger player does not create a carried kill. Ironmen can receive their own rewards under this personal-progress system.
Choose defence and attack style together
Bring melee equipment with meaningful slash defence, along with a weapon or set of weapons that covers the three weaknesses. Barrows tank armour can be useful here even when it offers less Strength bonus than a fragile alternative. Reducing incoming hits also reduces eating and, against Blood Moon, the healing she receives.
Boss | Preferred style | Flat-armour interaction |
|---|---|---|
Eclipse Moon | Stab | Positive flat armour reduces individual hits. A larger hit can be more useful than several small ones. |
Blue Moon | Crush | Negative flat armour adds damage to successful hits, helping suitable fast or multi-hit weapons. |
Blood Moon | Slash | Also has negative flat armour, but incoming damage and the boss's healing can outweigh a paper damage advantage. |
You do not need three expensive weapons to begin. A versatile weapon with the relevant styles can reduce switches, while a developed setup may use a specialised weapon for each boss. Inspect the weapon's selected style after switching; owning a stab-capable weapon does not mean it is currently using stab.
For example, a player who already has a Zamorakian hasta can use its different attack styles rather than purchasing three separate upgrades immediately. A player using a zombie axe can use its slash and crush options but should compare a suitable stab choice for Eclipse. These are equipment-path examples, not a universal best-in-slot list.
Protection prayers do not prevent Moon damage. Offensive and defensive stat-boosting prayers can still be useful, with their ordinary Prayer cost. Defence-reducing special attacks do not reduce these bosses' Defence, so do not spend the trip relying on that familiar opening routine.
Make supplies inside Neypotzli
The camps built during the quest provide supply crates, tools and cooking stoves. Gather resources and prepare enough for one boss before entering. Camps also offer a Make-cuppa option at the stove to restore run energy, so an energy-potion inventory is not necessary for the normal local loop.
Search the supply crates for the tools you need, including a pestle and mortar, vials of water and the food-gathering tools.
Collect moonlight grubs from a grubby sapling and grind them into paste.
Add the paste to vials of water to make moonlight potions. Bring several usable potions, then adjust the quantity after a boss.
Catch raw bream or moss lizards and cook them at the camp.
Restore health, Prayer and boosts, check the weapon style and enter the next chamber.
Moonlight potions require 38 Herblore, restore Prayer and boost melee stats. Their strength depends on Herblore; they are not identical to every high-tier outside potion at all levels. The number of doses made also varies. Check the actual inventory instead of assuming each vial holds four doses.
Food strength depends on both Cooking and the relevant gathering skill. Cooked bream scales with Cooking and Fishing; cooked moss lizard scales with Cooking and Hunter. Choose from your account's actual levels and the healing shown, rather than assuming the same food is best for everyone.
Food route | Gathering | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
Bream | Use a big fishing net at the local fishing spots, then cook the catch. | Fishing, Cooking, healing per item and the time spent gathering. |
Moss lizard | Use the rope-and-net trap locations, rustle the bushes and cook the catch. | Hunter, Cooking and how comfortably you can repeat the local trap routine. |
These dungeon resources are not free supplies to bank for the rest of OSRS. Moonlight potions cannot be taken out as usable potions; they revert when removed from Neypotzli. Learn the supply loop as part of the encounter instead of counting only time inside the boss room.
The shared rule: follow the highlighted glyph
During standard attacks, stand on Eyatlalli's highlighted moon glyph around the boss. The active position moves clockwise through the encounter. Move when it changes and resume attacking from the new protected area. Remaining outside the active area causes escalating damage.
That floor protection is separate from overhead prayers. Leaving the glyph while keeping a protection prayer active does not solve the mechanic. Keep your camera wide enough to see your tile and the next highlighted position.
The regular attack sequence has three hits. If an earlier hit misses, later hits in that sequence also miss, which is one reason useful defence has such a strong effect. Do not evaluate a defensive upgrade only by its visible maximum-hit contribution.
Use a special phase or another controlled interval for food and preparation when possible. Eating is allowed; in particular, eating your food does not itself heal Blood Moon. The health she regains comes from her damaging mechanics.
Eclipse Moon: the moving shield and clones
Use your stab setup during normal combat and keep following the active glyph. Eclipse's positive flat armour makes very small individual hits less attractive. Its special phases then change what matters.
Searing Rays: the boss places a moving moon shield between you and its attacks. Move alongside the shield, keeping it between your character and Eclipse. Follow its current position instead of clicking far ahead around the circle and cutting across the rays.
Clones: your character is moved to the centre and held in place. Face each arriving clone to parry its attack. Clicking the tile under or behind the visible clone gives your character the required facing. This phase rewards reacting to the next spawn rather than attempting to run out of the centre.
A successful parry returns a melee attack without the weapon's usual attack-delay restriction. A slow, high-hitting melee weapon can therefore be useful here. Ranged and Magic weapons do not provide the same damaging counterattack. If bringing a switch for this phase, prepare its location in the inventory before the clones arrive.
Blue Moon: recover the weapon and relight braziers
Use your crush setup, move with the active glyph and check that you are still attacking. Blue's cold effects can interrupt damage when you take hits, so a slowdown is not automatically a sign that the weapon choice is wrong.
Weapon Freeze: the boss removes your weapon and traps it in ice. Punch the ice associated with Eyatlalli's glyph while avoiding the spikes that appear. Recover the weapon and confirm the intended equipment and attack style before returning to regular combat.
Frost Storm: run to the two extinguished braziers and relight them while avoiding the moving storms. A tinderbox is not required for this mechanic. Getting caught interrupts movement, and leaving braziers unlit gives the boss more opportunities to heal.
Use deliberate short routes around the visible hazards rather than repeatedly clicking the farthest brazier through a storm. If a logout or disconnect leaves the weapon missing after the freeze phase, Eyatlalli can return it. Check that recovery before assuming the item was permanently lost.
Blood Moon: prevent healing and time the jaguar
Use slash for ordinary attacks and give defence a serious role. Damage from Blood Moon and her mechanics can heal her. A setup that repeatedly takes later hits can spend a long time fighting the health it just gave back.
Blood Rain: move off the blood pools as they form. Watch the ground until the phase has actually ended. The highlighted glyph can return while remaining pools are still dangerous, so do not stand in one solely because the normal-combat marker has reappeared.
Blood Jaguar: move to the highlighted jaguar and fight it from the protected glyph. Time a step toward the boss, out of the jaguar's attack, after the intervening blood pool has cleared; return to the protected position for the next exchange. Moving too early enters the damaging pool, while staying too long takes the jaguar hit.
Attacking the jaguar helps restore health lost during this phase. Learn the movement and current animation before optimising attacks. Entering the room just as the jaguar phase starts can make its timing harder to read; a learner can wait for a clearer phase start rather than forcing an uncertain rhythm.
If Blood repeatedly heals faster than you can make progress, review avoidable damage, defensive equipment, boosts and the selected slash style. Buying only more Strength bonus while losing substantial defence can worsen the actual fight.
A practical first full-chest route
After quest completion, try Eclipse → Blue → Blood → Lunar Chest as a learning sequence. The order is flexible, and supply or practice needs can justify another choice. The useful habit is to pause at the camp after each victory, not to rush from one unfamiliar boss into the next.
Prepare food and moonlight potions, restore run energy and check the emergency exit.
Enter Eclipse with the stab route and learn the shield and clone responses.
At the camp after the kill, restock and select crush for Blue.
Complete Blue, recover the weapon and rebuild your supply reserve.
Select slash and prepare for Blood's healing and movement mechanics.
After all three are subdued, travel to the Lunar Chest in the Ancient Shrine, claim once and begin a new cycle only when ready.
Do not treat the post-kill camp as proof that your inventory is ready. Check food strength, usable potion doses and the next weapon style. Supply preparation should become a quick repeatable checkpoint rather than an improvised search each time.
Lunar Chest rewards and targeted farming
You must defeat all three Moons once to unlock the Lunar Chest initially. After that, a run can claim after at least one Moon. Claiming resets the progress for the next chest, so check which bosses you intended to complete before opening it.
Each defeated Moon gives an independent 1-in-56 chance at an item from its own equipment set. Defeating all three gives approximately a 1-in-19 chance of at least one unique item, and more than one set's unique can appear in the same chest. These are probabilities, not a guaranteed schedule.
Duplicate protection works within each set until all of that set's pieces have been received once. It does not mean that every chest contains equipment, that completing one set completes the others, or that the pieces arrive in a fixed order.
When a chest contains no unique, defeating one, two or three Moons gives one, three or six standard-loot rolls respectively. A complete route therefore provides a different mix of rewards from repeatedly farming one target. Pick the route for the equipment you need and the full time it takes to complete it.
Account risks and the next improvement
For a main, compare the complete equipment purchase with the local supply loop rather than assuming every run consumes an inventory of bought food. For Ironman and GIM accounts, personal boss progress means other visible players do not have to finish the encounter for you. Prepare your own equipment and skills; the local resources do not erase those requirements.
Moon deaths are unsafe for Hardcore status and group lives. Ordinary item recovery uses a grave outside the relevant instance; UIMs must plan their own recovery and any existing retrieval storage before entering. A chamber full of other players is not a guarantee that someone can rescue your attempt.
After a first chest, note whether the main bottleneck was food preparation, missing the glyph, a special attack or Blood healing. Improve that part before adding more switches. Review the melee training guide for combat preparation, or the Herblore guide if stronger potion scaling is a useful next goal.
