Mining training works best when you choose the result you actually want: faster levels, longer breaks between clicks, or materials for another skill. Power-mining iron is inexpensive but repetitive. Motherlode Mine keeps useful ores and unlocks equipment. Calcified rocks supply a Prayer resource, while Shooting Stars offer longer periods between inputs. None wins every comparison.
This OSRS Mining guide gives you a practical route from level 1 to 99, the equipment worth checking, and the reasons to switch methods. The main route is for members; a separate section explains the free-to-play options. XP examples are planning benchmarks, not a promise of your results.
Choose your Mining route first
Your priority | Suggested progression | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Simple, inexpensive levels | Copper/tin to 15, then iron; move to the members’ Mining Guild at 60 | Dropping ore requires frequent attention |
Lower attention with banked ores | Motherlode Mine from 30; unlock the upper level at 57 | Slower than strong active methods; processing and banking interrupt mining |
Mining plus Prayer supplies | Calcified rocks from 41 after gaining Cam Torum access | Shards need a separate Prayer training process |
Longer gaps between inputs | Shooting Stars when a layer matches your level | Scouting, travelling and waiting lower effective XP |
High-effort XP | Learn tick manipulation, or a coordinated Volcanic Mine role | Execution, preparation and attention matter more |
Late-game resources | Amethyst from 92 | Modest XP; resource value changes |
You can keep using iron or Motherlode Mine beyond the next unlock. A level requirement is permission to try a method, rather than a deadline to abandon your current one. For a balanced account, combine active sessions with a quieter method you can sustain.
Pickaxes and upgrades: buy the useful ones
Bring the best pickaxe you can use and reasonably afford. The Mining requirement determines whether you can mine with it; Attack requirements determine whether you can wield it. Keeping a pickaxe in your inventory lets you mine without meeting its wielding requirement, at the cost of one inventory space.
Pickaxe | Mining level to use | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
Iron / steel | 1 / 6 | Cheap early upgrades |
Black / mithril | 11 / 21 | Use if convenient; avoid a long shopping detour |
Adamant / rune | 31 / 41 | Reliable progression for ordinary rocks |
Dragon | 61 | Check current price; wielding requires 60 Attack |
Crystal | 71 and Song of the Elves | Has charge upkeep; wielding also needs 70 Attack and 50 Agility |
A better pickaxe usually reduces the time between mining rolls; your Mining level affects success. Individual activities can modify equipment effects, so there is no universal percentage improvement that applies everywhere. An empty crystal pickaxe works as a dragon pickaxe. Check the crystal pickaxe requirements and charges before investing.
Celestial ring: Dusuri sells it for 2,000 stardust. Its invisible +4 Mining boost works even uncharged, but does not unlock rocks above your actual level. Charging adds an extra-resource effect only for supported rocks. Do not assume that effect works at Motherlode, calcified rocks or amethyst. The passive boost and the charged effect are different benefits.
Prospector kit: the complete outfit gives 2.5% extra Mining XP. It is a useful long-term upgrade, not a prerequisite for starting training. At Motherlode, weigh outfit pieces against the upper-floor unlock if you plan to spend many hours there.
Levels 1–15: copper, tin or an early quest
For a direct start, take an iron pickaxe to accessible copper and tin rocks, such as the south-east Varrock mine. Each ore gives 17.5 Mining XP. From zero XP, 138 successful copper or tin ores reach level 15 before any bonuses. Drop them for speed, or bank them if the materials serve an immediate account goal.
Doric’s Quest awards 1,300 Mining XP and reaches level 10 from level 1. Its requested materials can be obtained in advance; you do not have to mine every quest item yourself. From that reward alone, another 64 copper or tin ores reach level 15. These counts are calculations from XP thresholds, not a claim that either route takes a fixed number of minutes.
Quest rewards can skip more early training if their other requirements already fit your progression. Check the Mining training quest list before doing a lengthy quest purely for a small Mining reward.
Level 15 onward: iron for straightforward active XP
Iron gives 35 Mining XP per ore. Choose a spot with three nearby rocks, mine a rotation, and use shift-drop when the inventory fills. Keeping ore changes the method: include every bank trip when comparing your XP with a power-mining estimate. A close bank helps, but dropping normally preserves more training time.
At level 60, the members’ section of the Mining Guild becomes a strong iron location. Its nearby bank, faster rock respawns and invisible +7 Mining boost make it convenient. Those members’ benefits should not be assumed for the free-to-play part of the guild.
Guild mining also supplies unidentified minerals for mining gloves. Basic gloves cost 40 minerals and give an additional gather before depletion on supported rocks, including iron. Older guides describing their former percentage chance are outdated. Higher gloves have different coverage and effects: check the current glove table before buying an upgrade for a particular rock.
For your first session, clear unnecessary inventory items, enable shift-drop, and test the rotation for ten minutes. Count XP over the whole session, including interruptions. If constant dropping becomes tiring, move to a lower-input method rather than planning around an active rate you cannot maintain.
Level 30 onward: Motherlode Mine
Motherlode Mine is a members’ activity in the Dwarven Mine. Mining pay-dirt requires 30 Mining, which cannot be boosted. You can reach the north entrance without entering the level-60 Mining Guild; the skills necklace’s Mining Guild teleport leaves you near that entrance.
Mine an ore vein until your inventory fills or the vein depletes.
Put pay-dirt into the hopper. It cannot be stored in your bank.
Allow the machine to clean it. If both water wheels are broken, repair a strut with a hammer.
Collect the ores and golden nuggets from the sack, then bank the rewards.
Return to the veins and repeat; empty the sack when its capacity prevents more processing.
Bring a hammer or use one from a nearby crate. Rockfalls can block paths, so keep your pickaxe with you. Mining is only part of the loop: hopper trips, repairs and emptying the sack all count toward real session time.
Upgrade | Current requirement / cost | Why consider it? |
|---|---|---|
Upper floor | 57 Mining, unboostable; 100 golden nuggets | Longer-lasting veins and a more convenient layout |
Upper-floor hopper | Another 50 golden nuggets | Deposit upstairs without returning down the ladder |
Full Prospector kit | 180 golden nuggets | 2.5% Mining XP bonus when the full set is worn |
Larger sack | 200 golden nuggets | More capacity between collection cycles |
The upper floor now requires 57, not the old level 72. If Motherlode is your main route, the floor and hopper improve the routine before expensive convenience purchases. Lower-floor veins last around 23–27 seconds after mining begins; upper-floor veins last around 36–40 seconds. This is relaxed training, but still needs regular clicks.
Level 41 onward: calcified rocks and Prayer supplies
Calcified rocks are in Cam Torum Mine in Varlamore. You need 41 Mining and access through starting Perilous Moons. They produce stackable blessed bone shards, with occasional calcified deposits, rather than ordinary ore. Keep at least one empty inventory space even though the shards stack.
A rock lasts around 70 seconds. Water occasionally oozes from certain rocks, improving mining success while the effect lasts. Move to an available watery rock when convenient, but repeatedly hopping worlds for the effect applies a penalty. Normal local movement is a simpler starting routine.
Ordinary-training planning examples are roughly 27,000 Mining XP/hour at level 60, 34,000 at 70 and 44,000 at 90. Your results can differ from these planning examples. Your level, equipment, moving and idle time affect the session. Do not compare them with a tick-manipulation table as if the inputs were identical.
Bone shards are banked Prayer supplies: Mining does not automatically award their eventual Prayer XP. You must complete the separate offering process. Varrock armour, mining gloves and the ring’s charged extra-resource effect do not multiply calcified output; the celestial ring’s passive boost still helps.
Shooting Stars: longer breaks between inputs
A star’s current tier requires ten times that tier in Mining: tier 1 needs 10, tier 6 needs 60, and tier 9 needs 90. Fresh stars land at tiers 6–9, then degrade. A lower-level player can mine a suitable later layer; 60 Mining does not grant access to every newly fallen star.
Each layer lasts seven minutes while being mined. You must click again when the layer changes, and a layer already underway has less than seven minutes remaining. Travel, finding a suitable tier and waiting can reduce your effective XP substantially.
Use the Shooting Stars grouping chat or a telescope to locate stars, bring your pickaxe and a way home, and choose an accessible safe landing site. Some sites are in the Wilderness. Check the location before following a callout; carrying valuable gear into a dangerous area is unnecessary for a quiet training session.
Stardust buys rewards from Dusuri, including the celestial ring. Free-to-play players can mine stars at half the members’ XP rate, but cannot use the shop.
Advanced alternatives: faster XP or a different resource
Granite from 45: the Desert Quarry is associated with very fast Mining through three-tick manipulation. That rate depends on maintaining the manipulation cycle, movement and dropping; ordinary mining granite is a different experience. Plan desert heat protection and supplies before travelling. Learn the technique separately before committing to a long route.
Volcanic Mine: entry requires 50 Mining and access to Fossil Island. The current entry fee is 30 numulite per game, or 3,000 for permanent access. Around 70+ Mining is a more practical training starting point. Coordinated groups can earn strong XP, but need agreed roles for pressure and stability. Learn the full activity instructions, bring the recommended supplies, and leave before the ten-minute eruption. This is dangerous: dying can cost items and Hardcore status.
Other specialised choices: gem rocks can support Crafting, sandstone can supply glassmaking, and Zalcano after Song of the Elves offers a boss-style gathering activity. Their access, banking and reward loops differ. Choose them for an account goal rather than assuming every Mining activity competes only on XP.
Amethyst from 92: the members’ Mining Guild offers a later resource-focused route. Mining gloves and applicable equipment can improve the routine, but XP is modest compared with active training. Check current material demand and your own output before calling it profitable. Varrock armour 4 has an amethyst benefit; the celestial ring’s charged extra-ore effect does not. Do not transfer an enhancer’s effect from one rock to another.
Free-to-play and Ironman adjustments
For free-to-play, copper/tin into iron is a straightforward foundation. Reaching 60 opens the free-to-play Mining Guild area, but not its members-only bank, mineral shop or invisible boost. Stars are available with the restrictions above. Motherlode, calcified rocks and amethyst are members’ options.
On an Ironman, keep resources that solve a near-term problem: ores for a planned Smithing unlock, shards for Prayer, or sandstone for Crafting. Banking every early ore can be inefficient if it sits unused. Decide how many materials you need, bank that target, then reconsider whether dropping or a different activity serves the account better.
Before your next Mining session
Choose one goal: XP, a specific resource quantity, or lower attention.
Check the actual activity access, not just the Mining level.
Bring a suitable pickaxe, transport and activity-specific supplies.
Verify that each enhancer works on the chosen rock.
Measure the whole session, including scouting and banking.
Reassess at 30, 41, 57, 60, 61, 71 and 92; unlocks offer choices rather than mandatory switches.
