At normal Leviathan, block each orb on impact, use an Ancient shadow spell before volleys become unmanageable, then move around to hit the exposed back and resolve the resulting special. At 20% health, follow the abyssal pathfinder’s glowing area while continuing your prayers and movement.
This guide covers the repeatable fight after Desert Treasure II, without awakened tornadoes or one-tick enrage. It teaches a controlled ranged route and separates shadow-stun utility from expensive damage upgrades.
Bring the shadow spell before travelling
Complete Desert Treasure II and use the Temple of the Eye route into the Scar. An amulet of the eye provides convenient access to the temple. Once a scarred tablet is used on the ring of shadows, its Scar teleport shortens the journey.
Equip a functional ranged setup with the correct ammunition and charges. A bow of Faerdhinen with crystal armour or a suitable crossbow can be practical options. Crossbow users should plan appropriate bolts as health changes; ruby bolt value is not constant throughout the kill.
Be on Ancient Magicks and bring runes for a shadow spell. Shadow Rush works for the stun just as Shadow Barrage does, so do not postpone learning solely because you lack the higher spell. Practise locating the cast at the bank and confirm that you have runes for several stuns.
Bring ranged boosts, food, Prayer restoration and a usable emergency teleport. An optional faster ranged weapon can help in the ending, but only if you can change equipment without missing prayers or leaving the pathfinder. The first job is a functional setup rather than an expensive special weapon.
Incoming cue | Protection or action |
|---|---|
Blue orb | Protect from Magic at impact |
Green orb | Protect from Missiles at impact |
Orange orb | Protect from Melee at impact |
Falling debris shadow | Move off the targeted tile |
Directly beside the pool | Step out of bite range |
Pathfinder enrage | Stay within its five-by-five area while praying |
Read projectiles instead of the last animation
The ordinary volley damage is checked on impact and correct protection fully blocks it. Follow the orb approaching you, not simply the colour that hit previously. The lure on Leviathan’s head is another style cue, but the projectile you must currently block remains the priority.
The opening volley uses slower Magic and Ranged attacks. Later volleys speed up and introduce orange melee orbs. This is ranged protection switching even though one incoming projectile uses the melee style; do not run to the pool to respond to it.
Avoid the tiles directly adjacent to the pool, including diagonals, during ordinary attacks. Leviathan can bite there without the same useful projectile warning. A movement click that hugs the pool can turn an otherwise correct prayer sequence into a sudden heavy hit.
After a volley, a roar causes chip damage and debris falls, including a permanent blocker at your location. Leave the shadowed tile and keep a usable route around the arena. Blockers remain until the kill ends and can make later movement much harder if placed carelessly.
Stun, circle to the back and take the special
Cast a shadow spell when the volley is approaching a speed you cannot handle reliably. The stun lasts fifteen ticks in normal mode. During it, ordinary damage is heavily capped, so use the pause to reach the exposed wound on the back rather than remain at the front attacking reduced damage.
Hit the backside with ranged to trigger the useful high minimum-hit interaction. A successful back hit ends the stun and prompts a special attack. Plan where you are running before the cast, taking permanent debris and pool-edge bite tiles into account.
Stunning is not an unlimited reset to the opening volley. After the first successful reset the boss resumes at the second stage, then later resets begin at progressively faster stages. Overusing stuns without making enough damage progress therefore makes the remaining fight harder.
Learn one comfortable volley breakpoint, complete the back hit and handle the special. Improve damage and reduce unnecessary pauses over repeated kills. If you are forced to stun constantly, check missed attacks and inappropriate gear, rather than assume another stun will always return the same slow sequence.
Lightning: keep moving, then leave bite range
For Lightning Barrage, move continuously ahead of the lightning around the pool. Other projectiles land around the arena; a tight circuit close to the pool avoids those landing positions, but that close route is specifically for the special’s duration.
Prioritise completing the circuit. Do not attempt a lightning skip or stand still to copy an expert’s extra attacks on a first kill. At the end, step back out of melee distance immediately before ordinary volleys resume.
If debris blocks the intended route, adjust early rather than discover the obstacle when the lightning is already behind you. Keeping routes open during the previous falling-debris cycles is part of this mechanic, not just visual tidiness.
Smoke: place debris, then shelter behind it
During Smoke Blast, debris follows your position rapidly. Move across clear tiles so it lands behind you. After ten pieces, the boss releases the smoke blast; place a solid debris obstacle between yourself and Leviathan before it resolves.
Do not merely stop beside a rock without checking which side faces the boss. The obstacle must block the blast’s line. Use the time spent moving to identify the rock you will shelter behind rather than improvise at the final instant.
Reaching enrage during this special does not cancel the smoke blast. Finish the shelter response before treating the fight as a pure pathfinder phase. Damage is reduced during specials, so giving up one awkward attack to resolve cover safely is a sensible learner trade.
Enrage: follow the pathfinder and keep praying
At 180 health, or 20%, the boss enters enrage. It uses Magic and Ranged orbs at a two-tick pace, and an abyssal pathfinder moves around the arena. Its normal-mode area is five by five tiles. Stay inside it; your character glows when correctly covered.
Outside that area, orbs can pierce protection and your damage suffers. Inside it, ranged attacks gain perfect accuracy and a useful minimum hit, but you must still choose the correct overhead. The glow is not an invulnerability effect.
Start by locating the pathfinder, then move with it while avoiding new debris and the pool’s bite range. It normally starts in the north-west, but blocked spawn tiles can change the corner. Look for the actual spawn instead of committing to one assumed tile.
A blowpipe can benefit from fast attacks here, and a webweaver special is an optional burst tool. Neither replaces staying in the area. Use whichever weapon you can operate while praying, attack when possible and keep moving before a blocker traps your route.
Failure | Next adjustment |
|---|---|
Volleys become too fast | Use the planned shadow cast before losing control |
Stun gives little progress | Reach and hit the exposed back |
Lightning ends in a heavy hit | Leave the pool edge before the bite resumes |
Smoke blast still hits in enrage | Complete cover; the phase change does not cancel it |
Prayers seem ineffective at the end | Check the pathfinder glow and area |
No space left to move | Place early debris with the later circuit in mind |
Recover from a learning attempt
A death leaves the grave in the Scar by the rowboat. Prepare the return route and recovery supplies before your first attempt. Early reduced reclamation costs do not make this a safe Hardcore fight.
Aim first for one complete sequence: controlled volleys, a useful stun/back hit, both specials and a pathfinder finish. Once those actions repeat reliably, optimise weapon choices and damage windows rather than skip mechanics you have not yet learned.
