Your first God Wars Dungeon trip starts at the bank. Choose one boss, pack its entry tools and equip the right god items before you climb down. A missing hammer, an unprotected run through the central chamber or an overlooked killcount requirement can use up supplies before the fight begins.
This OSRS God Wars Dungeon guide covers access, travel, faction protection and the first four generals. It is a preparation guide: use a dedicated boss strategy for the actual encounter. Nex and the Ancient Prison are a separate progression step.
What you need to enter God Wars Dungeon
The main dungeon is north of Trollheim. You need either partial completion of Troll Stronghold through defeating Dad, or the teleport on Ghommal’s hilt after completing the Easy Combat Achievements. You also need 60 Strength or 60 Agility to pass the obstacle on the approach. A Strength boost can pass the outer boulder; it does not bypass Bandos’ separate 70 Strength requirement.
Bring a rope on your first visit and speak to the dying knight outside. You do not need to deliver his notes to Sir Tiffy before entering. The entrance rope remains attached, so later trips do not need another one for this hole.
Choose your route before withdrawing supplies
Route | Unlock | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
Ghommal’s hilt teleport | Easy Combat Achievements or higher | Use the unlocked hilt teleport; check charges or daily limits for your tier |
Trollheim Teleport | Eadgar’s Ruse and 61 Magic for the spell | Teleport runes or a suitable redirected tablet; descend the mountain and head north |
Burthorpe approach | Quest route through Dad | Climbing boots, a Burthorpe teleport and run-energy supplies for the longer walk |
On the Trollheim approach, turn on Protect from Missiles near the thrower trolls. Pass the boulder or agility obstacle, then continue north. The snowy approach drains combat stats, run energy and special attack energy; avoid standing there while sorting your inventory. Use Protect from Melee around the ice wolves and descend promptly.
The Fire of Unseasonal Warmth removes the cold effect once built. It requires Making Friends with My Arm and 60 Construction. Until you have it, carry restoration appropriate to your setup and check your current stats after entering. Drink your combat boost after dealing with the drain rather than wasting it before the walk.
On this approach map, blue follows the longer Burthorpe route and red starts from Trollheim Teleport. The marked green and cyan stretches identify the missile and melee protection areas. The nearby Wilderness shortcuts are one-way exits into the Wilderness; they are not a route into GWD from the Wilderness.
Wear god protection before climbing down
Followers normally attack you unless you are wearing an item aligned with their god. An item sitting in your inventory does not provide this protection. One item for a god is enough for its ordinary followers, and wearing several different affiliations together works.
For an unfamiliar route through the main chamber, wearing protection for all four factions is a convenient starting point. For example, an Armadyl pendant, a war blessing, a Zamorak cape and a holy symbol cover Armadyl, Bandos, Zamorak and Saradomin respectively. This is a travel example, not a recommended boss loadout. Adapt it to your equipment slots and unlocks.
After reaching a wing, the local faction and Zamorak protection are the relevant combination in Bandos, Armadyl and Saradomin territory. Zamorak’s wing contains its own followers. Keep the items equipped while collecting killcount. Switching them off can start aggression, and putting them back on does not immediately cancel a fight already underway.
God items protect against ordinary faction aggression. They do not make the general or its bodyguards harmless inside a boss room. Make your final equipment switch deliberately at the door, with the correct protection prayer ready.
Each wing has its own entry requirement
General and direction | Wing requirement | Extra item or effect |
|---|---|---|
General Graardor, north-west | 70 Strength, unboostable | Hammer to strike the gong; a suitable warhammer or Elder maul also works |
Kree’arra, south-west | 70 Ranged, unboostable | Crossbow and mithril grapple |
Commander Zilyana, south-east | 70 Agility, unboostable | Two ropes on the first visit; they remain attached |
K’ril Tsutsaroth, north-east | 70 Hitpoints to cross; boostable | Crossing the river drains Prayer to zero |
For Zamorak, restore Prayer after crossing and before engaging dangerous enemies. For Saradomin, count the two wing ropes separately from the first-time dungeon entrance rope. For Bandos, put the hammer on your checklist even if you usually obtain one from goblins; relying on a drop creates an avoidable delay.
Killcount, keys and the boss door
Normally you need 40 kills of the chosen god’s followers to enter its boss room. Bandos killcount can be gathered from low-level goblins in the main dungeon. Attack your intended faction’s monsters and watch the matching essence counter; killing an unrelated follower does not help that door.
Completed Combat Achievement reward tiers reduce the requirement: Hard to 35, Elite to 30, Master to 25 and Grandmaster to 15. Easy and Medium do not reduce this threshold. An ecumenical key can bypass the killcount requirement for an entry, but obtaining one in the Wilderness God Wars Dungeon involves a separate Wilderness trip and player-killing risk.
Entering spends the required essence. Leaving the dungeon resets accumulated killcount, so a bank trip generally means collecting it again. The generals and their bodyguards also supply essence toward later entries. Before entering, use Peek to check occupancy and coordinate with your team. Do not assume the room is empty because the surrounding wing is quiet.
Build the inventory around the boss
Start with a one-click emergency teleport, Prayer restoration, high-healing food, your route items and the wing tool. Add the correct combat potion and any method-specific equipment. K’ril needs poison preparation; Kree’arra needs a suitable attack method for an aviansie; Graardor and Zilyana require their own movement and prayer plans.
For a first trip, reduce optional switches until you can find food, restore and teleport without searching. Leave looting space by planning which travel items can be removed after entry. Do not drop a god item you still need to wear for the return through the wing.
Bones to Peaches tablets can turn suitable bone drops into food and extend trips. Blood spells and Guthan’s offer other sustain options where the chosen strategy supports them. Each option has equipment, spellbook or rune requirements; carrying the item alone does not guarantee enough healing to stay indefinitely.
Altars, instances and recovery
The four original boss rooms have altars that restore Prayer when you are out of combat, with a ten-minute cooldown. Treat this as occasional support and carry enough restoration to survive without an immediate recharge. The altar’s right-click Teleport option exits the room into the wing, including during combat; it does not take you to a bank.
Paid private instances unlock through the Hard Combat Achievement rewards. Read the current entry dialogue for the applicable fee and room type. Ironman and Group Ironman room arrangements differ from a normal public team, so coordinate using the appropriate mode rather than assuming everyone can enter the same fight.
These are dangerous encounters. For ordinary gravestone deaths in the original four boss rooms, the grave appears outside the boss room, so you do not need another key simply to reach that grave. Consumables may remain inside. A private room can disappear when abandoned, taking loose ground items with it; do not treat a long ground-item timer as death protection. Ultimate Ironmen should plan around their separate death rules, while Hardcore accounts should treat a death here as a status risk.
Your first-trip checkpoint
Choose a general and read its fight strategy before banking.
Equip travel god items; withdraw the teleport, ropes or wing tool you actually need.
Reach the entrance, handle cold-drained stats and descend.
Collect the correct essence while keeping faction protection equipped.
Peek, agree roles, restore health and Prayer, then enter together.
Leave while you still have a workable escape and enough supplies for mistakes.
If the account is still missing reliable protection-prayer use, healing or damage, use the OSRS PvM progression guide to choose an earlier practice encounter. Your first GWD goal is a repeatable trip with understood entry and recovery, followed by longer trips as execution improves.
