Giant Mole is a useful first boss when you want a straightforward combat loop: prepare melee protection, deal damage, find the boss after a burrow and repeat. The main inconvenience is usually the chase. A Falador shield 3 or 4 makes repeat trips much easier, but you can obtain a first kill before finishing the diary that awards it.
This guide separates a first completion from sustained nest farming. It covers entry, ordinary learner equipment, tracking, the paid instance and what to do with the rewards. You do not need a high-end weapon or a low-Hitpoints Dharok setup to learn the encounter.
Entry checklist: spade, light, supplies and exit
The lair is below Falador Park. Take a spade to a molehill and use the appropriate digging or entrance option. A charged ring of wealth offers a convenient Falador Park arrival; an ordinary Falador teleport followed by the walk is another route. Choose a separate usable exit and keep it accessible in the inventory.
Bring a reliable light source, such as a lit bullseye lantern. An uncovered candle can be extinguished by the dirt thrown up when the boss burrows. A lantern that is not actually lit does not solve the problem. If you have already built the Fire of Eternal Light in this location after Making Friends with My Arm, that permanent lighting replaces the portable requirement.
Check | What to bring or confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Entry | Spade and an arrival at Falador Park. | Avoid a bank return before the attempt begins. |
Lighting | A covered, working light source or your constructed permanent fire. | Darkness adds damage while you are trying to navigate. |
Combat | A supported weapon, food and enough Prayer restoration. | A weapon upgrade does not replace the supplies needed to use it. |
Exit | A teleport with its actual charges, runes or tablet. | An arrival option is not necessarily an emergency escape. |
As a learner target, around 60 in your relevant combat skills and 43 Prayer give a useful starting project. These are preparation recommendations, not formal entry gates. More Hitpoints and damage give more room for errors. Restricted accounts should evaluate their own constraints before copying an ordinary account's equipment.
Choose one complete setup
For a simple melee attempt, use a weapon with a suitable stab option, practical melee equipment and some Prayer bonus where you can retain useful damage. Verify the selected attack style. A weapon being capable of stab does not mean the current style uses it, and a restricted build must also check which skills receive XP.
Magic is a viable alternative: Giant Mole currently has a 50% Earth weakness. Use an Earth spell your account can cast and supply, with a compatible autocast staff if desired. A powered staff does not become an Earth spell because you equip Earth-themed equipment. Terrain can prevent the mole reaching you, but the path has to be genuinely blocked; confirm that before treating a position as a safespot.
Ranged is another option when you already own an appropriate weapon and ammunition. Compare the complete purchase, supply cost and chase time before buying an expensive item for this boss alone. For your first trip, one supported combat style is easier to manage than carrying equipment for every possible method.
High-level farming methods can use Dharok's set at very low health or expensive weapons to reduce the number of attacks before a burrow. Those approaches answer a different question from learning the first kill. Start with healthy Hitpoints and a setup that lets you recover from a missed prayer. A video showing very fast kills is not a promise that a lower-level copy will achieve the same result.
For a short melee learning trip, one possible inventory is a spade, lantern, exit item, Falador shield if owned, a combat potion, two stamina potions, six Prayer potions and food in the remaining slots. This is an illustrative layout, not a tested universal requirement. Spell runes, ammunition, additional equipment or account restrictions change the available space.
Your first kill, from entry to loot
Arrive with health and Prayer restored, a working light and the correct weapon style selected.
Check whether you are entering the public cave or paying for an instance. Do not spend an instance fee by accident while trying to inspect the entrance.
Find Giant Mole, turn on Protect from Melee before close combat and begin attacking.
When she burrows, stop clicking the empty position. Locate the new position, check Prayer and move deliberately.
Re-establish protection before resuming close combat. Continue until the kill, then collect the skin and claw drops.
Review remaining supplies before beginning another kill. Leave if the next attempt would exhaust your reserve.
The fight does not require a multi-style prayer rotation. The habit to learn is maintaining the protection and supply routine while repeatedly moving. A quiet run across an apparently empty cavern can make it easy to forget that an overhead prayer is still draining your reserve.
Keep the camera and minimap usable during the chase. If you are struggling to find the mole, improve the view and tracking method before deciding that the weapon is the main problem. Spending most of a trip searching is different from spending it attacking slowly.
Burrowing and the Falador shield upgrade
Below roughly half health, incoming attacks can cause Giant Mole to relocate. One disappearance does not mean the kill has reset. Use the tracker if available, travel to the new position and continue. If she relocates repeatedly, stay with the process rather than using increasingly frantic clicks.
Falador shield 3 is awarded through the hard Falador Diary; shield 4 also supports tracking. Bring the relevant shield and use its mole-locator function. The diary upgrade also allows the ordinary mole skin and claw drops to arrive noted, saving inventory space. Tracking and noted loot solve different limits: one reduces search time, the other reduces banking pressure.
Killing Giant Mole once is itself a hard Falador Diary task. That means the diary is a valuable repeat-trip objective, not something every player can already have completed before their first kill. If the rest of the diary is far beyond your account, complete a short trial trip before committing to a long farm without the tracker.
You do not need to keep the shield in your combat off-hand merely to copy a screenshot; choose the fighting equipment that fits the method and keep the tracker available. Check the actual item options and inventory before starting another long trip.
Public cave or private instance?
Account and rewards claimed | Instance fee | Decision for a short trip |
|---|---|---|
Ordinary account | 25,000 coins. | Compare the fee with the number of kills you intend to attempt. |
Ordinary account with hard Combat Achievement rewards | 12,500 coins. | The reward must be claimed. |
Ironman account | 12,500 coins normally; 6,250 with the hard Combat Achievement discount. | A lower fee still needs to be included in the trip budget. |
The instance entrance is at the north-western molehill by the spade. This is optional; the paid room is not an access requirement for every kill. Check the entrance options and displayed charge before committing. A private room gives control over occupancy, but it does not make death safe.
On the public route, check whether someone is already fighting the boss. An occupied cave can make a first attempt harder to interpret and can affect an Ironman's loot eligibility. Choose a suitable empty world rather than assuming that dealing some damage always gives your account the reward.
Turn the rewards into the account progress you need
The guaranteed claws and ordinary skins can be traded to Wyson the gardener for bird nests. For a main, compare selling the tradeable drops with exchanging them, using current prices and all relevant costs. For an Ironman, the nests can support a future Herblore supply goal even when there is no sale.
Immaculate mole skin is a separate rare reward with a use in creating the gem sack, or an exchange for additional nests. Do not mistake it for the ordinary skins dropped each kill. Check whether its unlock is useful before exchanging an untradeable reward simply to clear a slot.
Goal | Useful measure | Avoid this assumption |
|---|---|---|
First completion | A controlled kill and a clear return route. | Every first trip needs a full farming setup. |
Nests for supplies | Nests obtained per complete trip after banking and inputs. | All loot must be valued as a Grand Exchange sale. |
Diary progress | The kill plus the other hard-diary requirements. | One kill automatically awards the tracking shield. |
Pet or collection log | A repeatable method you can sustain. | A rare reward arrives on a fixed schedule. |
Ironman goal: bird nests for Saradomin brews
Giant Mole is also an active supply stop for Ironmen preparing Saradomin brews. The useful chain is mole claws and mole skins → Wyson's bird nests → crushed nests → brews. The boss does not hand you finished brews: nests provide the secondary ingredient, while you still need the potion base and Herblore level.
Step | What to do | What to plan separately |
|---|---|---|
Collect and exchange | Bank the claws and skins, then exchange them with Wyson the gardener for bird nests. | Trip supplies and access to a bank. |
Prepare the secondary | Remove any seed or ring from a nest before crushing the empty nest with a pestle and mortar. | Inventory space for the nest contents. |
Make the brew | At 81 Herblore, add one crushed nest to one toadflax potion (unf) to make a Saradomin brew(3). | Your toadflax, vials of water and the required Herblore level. |
Set the trip goal around the ingredient you are short of. A bank full of nests does not solve a toadflax shortage or unlock level 81 Herblore. Bird house runs can supply nests alongside normal account progress; Mole gives you an active way to gather more when your brew plans need additional secondaries. For repeated Mole trips, the Falador shield's tracking and noted-drop benefits make the supply routine easier to sustain.
Ironman, Hardcore and UIM checks
Mains can buy a short supply batch; Ironmen need to obtain their weapon, light and potions through their own progression. Group Ironmen should follow their group's loot restrictions. A shared public fight with unrelated accounts is not automatically a valid way to farm a personal reward.
Deaths at Giant Mole are unsafe for Hardcore status and HCGIM lives. A simple attack pattern should not be confused with a safe-death encounter. Keep an exit ready, maintain the light and leave deliberately when supplies or concentration run low.
UIMs should plan inventory space for tools, supplies and rewards, together with their own deathpile and retrieval-storage rules. Instructions to bank spare gear or rely on a normal gravestone are not a complete UIM plan. Deal with existing item-retrieval risks before entering any dangerous boss encounter.
Improve the part that actually limits the trip
After a trial, record whether the bottleneck was locating the mole, run energy, damage, Prayer or inventory space. Work on that specific problem. A tracking unlock can help a search-heavy trip more than a small equipment upgrade; a better supply layout can help a player who repeatedly leaves with unused switches and no food.
Keep first-kill notes separate from farming estimates. Include travel, finding a world, banking, potions and any instance fee when comparing methods. Continue with the levels-versus-gear guide if you are choosing an upgrade, or the Herblore guide when nests are part of a longer supply project.
