After Desert Treasure II, choose a boss that matches the skill you want to practise: Duke Sucellus for a deliberate melee rhythm, Vardorvis for overlapping movement and prayer cues, the Leviathan for projectile prayers, or the Whisperer for magic combat and special-attack execution. You do not need one expensive setup covering all four before learning any of them.
This preparation guide covers the normal, repeatable post-quest encounters. They are stronger than the quest fights. Awakened encounters use an awakener’s orb and have additional mechanics; leave those for a separate learning project. A first normal kill is a sensible milestone, not proof that the awakened version will be manageable.
Access comes from the completed quest
Complete Desert Treasure II – The Fallen Empire before planning regular post-quest kills. Meeting a suggested combat level does not replace quest completion. Conversely, a recommended 90 combat stat is a comfort target rather than an extra entrance requirement imposed by these guides.
Prepare one boss at a time. Withdraw its damage setup, the specific utility items it needs, recovery supplies and a usable emergency teleport. Check charges, ammunition, spellbook and runes at the bank. Finding a shadow spell missing during a fast Leviathan volley is much harder to fix than checking it before leaving.
These are dangerous fights. Death can remove regular Hardcore Ironman status or a Hardcore Group Ironman life. Ordinary gravestones also involve recovery costs. The reduced reclamation costs offered for the first few kills do not make the encounters safe or protect hardcore status.
Boss | Main learner setup | Essential extra job |
|---|---|---|
Duke Sucellus | Slash melee; appropriate demonbane is useful | Prepare poisons, hide from gaze, dodge slams |
Vardorvis | Slash melee with useful defence | Dodge axes and spikes while blocking the head |
The Leviathan | Ranged plus Ancient shadow spell | Manage faster volleys, stuns and pathfinder enrage |
The Whisperer | Magic plus fast ranged switch | Carry blackstone fragment; manage sanity and specials |
Pick a first boss by the mistake you can control
Duke is a practical starting choice if you prefer repeated movement around pillars to rapid changes between overhead prayers. Its preparation gives you time to organise supplies before waking it. It still has a potentially lethal gaze, so “more deliberate” does not mean you can ignore the screen.
Vardorvis suits players who want a compact, active melee encounter. It punishes damage taken by healing itself, and the ending becomes busier. Start with movement and prayer consistency before adding precise axe skips or extra special-attack switches.
Leviathan is a useful projectile-prayer lesson, but you must know your shadow spell and the route around the pool before starting. Whisperer adds a separate sanity resource and three specials. Choose either when you are ready to practise its whole sequence, rather than buy a weapon and hope to skip the mechanics.
Build a functional setup before chasing best in slot
For either melee boss, check that the weapon is set to slash where applicable. Add an appropriate defender when using a one-handed weapon, a combat potion and offensive prayer you can sustain. Vardorvis rewards slash defence as well as damage because its normal attacks remain accurate.
For Leviathan, use a ranged weapon you can maintain, with matching bolts, arrows or charged ammunition. Bring runes for an Ancient shadow spell: Shadow Rush can perform the required stun, so Shadow Barrage is not a mandatory upgrade. Keep the cast easy to find.
For Whisperer, use a reliable magic setup and a fast ranged weapon for lost souls. A charged powered staff can simplify regular attacks. If using an elemental spell instead, verify the spellbook, runes and supporting gear; do not assume a powered staff is casting an earth spell. Bring a freeze or bind plan as well as the blackstone fragment.
Ironmen should choose sustainable equipment and consumables already available to the account. A main can buy alternatives, but a purchase cannot replace a spellbook unlock, a missing fragment or knowledge of the exit route. Assess supply drain over several attempts before committing to a long trip.
Plan the route before the first death
The ring of shadows gains individual boss teleports by consuming the corresponding tablet. Owning the ring alone does not unlock every destination. Until you obtain the relevant tablet, use the longer route and make sure you can repeat it with recovery supplies.
Vardorvis is reached through the Stranglewood, with fairy ring bls and the rowboat providing an approach. Unlock the temple-to-ritual-site shortcut. Duke can be reached through Weiss and the Salt Mine to Ghorrock Dungeon. Leviathan is reached through the Temple of the Eye and the Scar. Whisperer is below Camdozaal in the Lassar Undercity.
Keep a small recovery kit in the bank: travel item, food, protection for the route and enough coins or access to payment for recovery. After dying, identify the actual grave location before rushing back in the same inadequate setup. Do not assume every grave is at the arena entrance.
Bank check | What to verify |
|---|---|
Offence | Correct attack style, charges and ammunition |
Utility | Shadow spell for Leviathan; fragment and bind plan for Whisperer |
Recovery | Food, Prayer restoration, emergency teleport |
Travel | Unlocked tablet destination or working fallback route |
Learning goal | One repeatable mechanic to improve this trip |
After a death | Grave location, recovery payment and a safer return kit |
Make the first trips short and diagnostic
Start with enough healing for mistakes instead of an inventory designed for an expert’s long trip. Eat and restore Prayer during quieter movement windows; keep the emergency teleport accessible. If several things go wrong together, leaving can be a better learning decision than spending the last supplies on a chaotic attempt.
After each attempt, name the first avoidable error: a Duke slam, Vardorvis head miss, late Leviathan stun, or unnecessary Whisperer time in the Shadow Realm. Improve that action before changing the entire loadout. Shorter kills become useful once the same preparation repeatedly produces controlled completions.
Do not budget around a guaranteed rare drop or a fixed profit per hour. Learning deaths, supplies, gear, market prices and individual luck change the result. Your first checkpoint is a completed normal kill; the next is several kills with stable recovery and a clear understanding of the ending.
