Demonic gorillas involve two separate switches: change your protection to match their attacks, and change your weapon when their overhead blocks your damage. Bring at least two combat styles, count correctly protected attacks and step off falling-boulder shadows. Solving those jobs separately makes the encounter much easier to read.

This guide covers post-Monkey Madness II gorillas in the Crash Site Cavern. It uses current prayer-switch rules rather than the older 50-damage or six-hit descriptions, and teaches a small melee/ranged switch before extra damage optimisation.

Access, travel and a small inventory switch

Complete Monkey Madness II and use the royal seed pod to reach the Grand Tree. Go through the fence opening north-west of the tree, continue towards the cavern and choose a suitable fighting area. Parts of the cavern are multicombat; a solo learner should avoid unintentionally engaging several gorillas.

Use a melee weapon and a ranged weapon with matching ammunition or charges. Arclight or Emberlight and a suitable bow or crossbow can provide a practical demonbane-based progression, but a particular high-tier weapon is not mandatory. Check upkeep before committing to a long trip.

Start with the weapons and only a few useful supporting switches, such as body armour and amulet. Keep shared gloves, boots and jewellery where sensible. A large switch that delays every protection prayer can perform worse in practice than a smaller, reliable setup.

Bring food, Prayer restoration, combat boosts and an emergency teleport. A black demon or monkey Slayer task can make the appropriate imbued Slayer helmet useful, but a task is not required to enter or kill them. Ironmen can treat zenyte shards as a longer account project rather than expect one in the first session.

What changes

Trigger

Your job

Gorilla attack style

Three missed attacks, with the third correctly protected for a consistent switch

Read the new attack and change your overhead

Gorilla protection prayer

At least four damaging hits and 70 total damage

Use a combat style it is not protecting against

Boulder shadow

Ground-targeted special

Move at least one tile away

Both switches together

Independent systems happen to overlap

Protect yourself first, then change weapon and re-click

Recognise the three attacks before counting them

The magic attack uses a green orb from the mouth after the gorilla rears up. The ranged attack involves grabbing and throwing a small rock. Melee is the close claw swipe. Use these animations to establish what it is doing before trying to predict the next style.

Protect against the current attack and count its zero-damage results. After three misses the gorilla can change style, accompanied by its scream. The third must be correctly prayed against for the expected switch to be consistent; an accidental zero off prayer is not a reliable substitute.

Keep the correct prayer through the third attack rather than guess early. If you miss one and the count becomes uncertain, read the actual next animation and rebuild the sequence. A confident but wrong count is more dangerous than briefly slowing down damage to recover it.

Boulder tosses do not count towards the three misses. Treat them as movement interruptions within the sequence, not an automatic extra attack in your counter.

Predict melee by making room for movement

After a ranged or magic sequence, step away before the next ordinary attack. If the gorilla follows to reach you, prepare Protect from Melee. If it remains at range, expect the other distance style: ranged after magic, or magic after ranged.

After melee, the next style can be either ranged or magic. There is no guaranteed visual prediction that removes this choice before the attack cue. Protect against the more dangerous style for your current defence, watch the new animation and correct immediately if needed.

Leave enough clear ground for this step-away test. A wall, another creature or a large awkward path can make following behaviour harder to interpret. Do not copy the method while pinned in a corner and assume no movement proves a ranged attack.

A special such as a Scorching bow bind can also alter how easily melee reaches you. Keep the basic prediction method tied to actual pathing, and do not treat a bound gorilla as following the ordinary demonstration unchanged.

Attack the style its overhead does not block

The gorilla’s own prayer is a damage restriction, not a cue for your overhead. If it protects from Melee, use ranged. If it protects from Missiles, use melee. If it protects from Magic and you brought the ordinary melee/ranged pair, either of those styles can damage it.

The current switch requires at least four separate damaging hits as well as 70 total damage. The damage can include more than one unprotected style; it is not a fresh 70-point counter for every weapon you equip. Read the visible overhead when it changes.

Combat stops when it changes its protection. Equip the appropriate weapon, check the attack setting and re-click the gorilla. Waiting for automatic combat to resume can look like a damage problem even though the character is simply idle.

Multi-hit specials can lose later damage when the gorilla changes prayer during their hits. Use them with awareness of the current damage window rather than spend all special energy just before the overhead is about to block melee.

Move for boulders without losing the prayer sequence

When it beats its chest and a rock shadow appears on your tile, move at least one tile away before impact. Prayer does not solve this ground-targeted attack. Stay clear of other players’ targeted tiles as well.

Make one useful movement and continue reading the ordinary attacks. A long panic run can pull another gorilla or complicate the next melee prediction. Reposition in clear space, restore the appropriate overhead and resume your chosen damage style.

If you need to eat while changing both weapon and prayer, protect first. Keep health high enough to survive one mistaken ranged/magic guess, especially when learning after a melee sequence. Staying at critically low health to save food removes that margin.

Problem

Practical correction

Wrong overhead after every scream

Separate the attack-style count from its protection prayer

No damage after a weapon swap

Check its overhead and re-click to resume combat

Count fails after a special

Do not count boulder tosses as ordinary misses

Too many interfaces to manage

Reduce the gear switch and use familiar tab hotkeys

Unexpected second enemy

Choose a quieter spot outside multicombat overlap

Keep trips controlled and bank the improvement

Ordinary death recovery and unsafe Hardcore consequences apply. Keep the seed pod or another working escape available, and restore supplies before trying to squeeze another kill out of an exhausted inventory.

A useful first target is several gorillas with no boulder hits and fewer wrong-prayer attacks, not a fixed hourly return. Once the two counters are familiar, add damage upgrades or a sustain special only if they improve the actual session without making the switches unreliable.

Choose the next account upgrade

Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
