Commander Zilyana is a movement encounter. For a first solo Ranged kill, use Protect from Magic, keep run energy available and move around the outside of the room between attacks. If she catches you, create distance before trying to recover the damage you missed. Her fast attacks punish standing still much more than an untidy damage rotation.

This OSRS Commander Zilyana guide teaches a conventional Ranged first-trip plan. A crossbow can start the learning process; Bowfa and later weapons improve the equipment options. Exact no-stamina tile circuits and expensive Shadow setups are later methods, with different timing and preparation.

Access: 70 Agility and the right ropes

Saradomin’s Encampment is in the south-east of God Wars Dungeon. It requires 70 Agility, which cannot be boosted. Bring two ropes the first time you enter this wing, in addition to the rope needed for your first-ever descent into the dungeon. The attached ropes remain in place for later trips.

Reach GWD through the Troll Stronghold route after defeating Dad, or use the unlocked Ghommal’s hilt teleport. Equip god protection before descending and keep Saradomin and Zamorak items worn while moving through the encampment. A god item in the backpack does not provide protection, and ordinary follower protection does not stop the boss attacking you.

The rope descent used to enter Saradomin’s Encampment in God Wars Dungeon

Gather 40 Saradomin essence for the boss door. The completed Hard, Elite, Master and Grandmaster Combat Achievement reward tiers reduce that to 35, 30, 25 and 15 respectively. An ecumenical key bypasses the essence requirement for an entry; obtaining one in the Wilderness is a separate risk decision. Peek at the room before entering and check that your party is using the same room type.

Choose a Ranged setup you can sustain

For a learner, around 80 or higher Ranged and Defence are useful preparation targets, not access requirements. Higher Hitpoints gives more room to recover. Protect from Magic requires 37 Prayer, while 44 Prayer unlocks Eagle Eye; later offensive prayers have their own level and unlock requirements. Bring enough restoration to keep your chosen prayers active.

Equipment route

Practical example

Check before leaving

Crossbow learner

Rune or dragon crossbow, compatible enchanted diamond bolts, Ranged armour and a useful shield

Bolts must match the crossbow; damage may limit trip length

Bowfa progression

Bow of Faerdhinen with crystal armour

Weapon state and armour charges; a different attack rhythm from a crossbow

Later upgrades

Twisted bow, or a properly supported Shadow setup

Compare the complete setup and supplies rather than buying an isolated weapon

A Ranged body and legs, Ava’s device appropriate to your unlocks, an accuracy necklace and sensible defensive accessories make a coherent starting kit. Pick god items around that kit. After reaching the door, change travel equipment only when you are ready to enter. Do not forget ammunition when swapping out an ammunition-slot blessing.

A blowpipe can help clear bodyguards and its special attack can support healing. A serpentine helm plus blowpipe is an optional way to envenom bodyguards on a successful hit. It adds equipment, charges and extra targeting, so leave that switch out of a first attempt if it distracts from keeping Zilyana at a distance.

Pack run energy as a combat supply

For a short trial, a starting inventory might contain two four-dose stamina potions, one Ranging potion, five super restores, a one-click teleport and Bones to Peaches tablets. That occupies ten slots before travel items, healing switches and loot space; fill most of the remaining room with high-healing food. Adjust after seeing which resource actually ends your trip.

Restore cold-drained stats after the approach and apply your combat boost at a useful time. Start with run enabled, a healthy energy reserve and a stamina effect available. Keep the stamina, food, restore and escape in fixed slots so that using them does not turn into a long pause beside the boss.

Brews are optional. If you use one, account for the Ranged-stat reduction, restore drained stats and reboost when appropriate. Repeatedly brewing without repairing your offensive stats makes the kill longer, costing more run energy and exposing you to more bodyguard attacks.

Zilyana attacks every two game ticks, or 1.2 seconds, and can hit 27 with melee. A single late click can therefore become several hits if you stay still to eat or inspect the inventory. Her Magic attack does not mean she casts freely across the whole room: keeping her out of melee distance prevents her normal attacks reaching you.

Commander Zilyana and her three bodyguards inside the Saradomin boss room

Your first solo kill: move, shoot, move

  1. Before entry: restore health and Prayer, activate Protect from Magic and your Ranged prayer, enable run and check the stamina effect.

  2. Establish the route: enter and move toward the outer edge with Zilyana following behind. Choose one direction around the perimeter and keep it consistent.

  3. Take a shot with space: attack once when you have a clear gap, then click farther along the perimeter. Let movement resume immediately after the shot rather than waiting for the projectile to land.

  4. Round the corner: move around the outside instead of cutting diagonally through the room toward her. If the gap is poor, skip the shot and keep running.

  5. Use supplies while moving: issue the movement click before opening a short window to drink or eat, then confirm that you are still travelling along the intended route.

  6. Repeat until she dies: keep the boss visible. A slower kill with controlled movement is a better first checkpoint than standing still to force extra attacks.

Do not repeatedly click a distant boss if the weapon’s range pulls you back toward her. Check your character’s actual movement after attacking. A crossbow and Bowfa have different attack speeds, so a rhythm learned with one weapon should not be copied blindly after switching.

If she catches you or run energy drops

Keep Protect from Magic active for this Ranged method, eat if needed and restore separation before taking another shot. Trying to shoot, eat and turn a corner at once can leave you stationary. If the route is lost, a deliberate movement segment without attacking can recover it.

Refresh stamina before energy runs out. When you no longer have a reliable movement reserve, leave rather than expecting food to compensate for walking beside her. A disconnect or delayed movement click is also a reason to shorten the trip. This encounter has no safe guarantee simply because the last lap went well.

Bodyguards, healing and the next spawn

After Zilyana dies, reassess the remaining attacks. With Magic protection already active, Bree is a useful first target because its Ranged damage is unblocked. Adjust overheads as the surviving bodyguards change; do not turn prayers off while multiple styles are still hitting you.

Convert suitable bones with Bones to Peaches, use available food drops and heal before the next spawn. A full four-enemy set of suitable bones can provide four peaches, worth 32 Hitpoints in total. Blood spells can provide further sustain if you have Ancient Magicks, the required runes and enough Magic accuracy. Clear the room and reset rather than assuming a healing switch will always finish in time.

The normal respawn is 90 seconds. Use that gap to restore Prayer, check potion duration, arrange supplies and return to your starting position. The room altar restores Prayer out of combat on a ten-minute cooldown; carry restoration instead of planning every kill around an available altar.

Teams and later no-stamina routes

In a team, Zilyana can change attention when she cannot reach the current target. Watch who she follows and move when it becomes you; do not apply Bandos’ static tank assignment without adapting. Agree loot splits and who handles bodyguards before entry. Ordinary Ironmen need an eligible solo strategy, while Group Ironmen can organise within their group’s rules.

Bowfa no-stamina methods combine specific attack tiles with walking segments to conserve energy. Their first-kill start differs from later spawns. Learn that particular circuit and its current-tile timing before removing stamina supplies. Tile markers are visual references; they do not automate movement, guarantee the timing or repair a missed shot.

Rewards and the recovery plan

Zilyana drops the Armadyl crossbow and Saradomin hilt at listed individual rates of 1/508. Despite its name, the Armadyl crossbow comes from this Saradomin boss. Other notable drops include the Saradomin sword and Saradomin’s light. Rates are probabilities, not a scheduled reward after that many kills.

This is a dangerous encounter. A normal gravestone appears outside the boss room; wear faction protection for the return. Loose ground items in an abandoned private instance can be lost. Ultimate Ironmen need their separate death plan, and Hardcore accounts risk status here. Keep an emergency teleport available throughout the run.

After the trial, record whether movement, run energy, damage or healing ended the trip. Fix that bottleneck before adding more switches. The OSRS PvM progression guide can help choose an earlier practice encounter if the current setup cannot yet support a controlled kill.
