Calvar’ion is a crush-melee boss built around movement: dodge lightning, leave the shield-bash shadows and kill the hellhounds that make him immune. His lower Wilderness location gives useful teleport options, but the singles-plus arena allows player attacks during the fight. This guide takes you through one complete two-form kill with a modest-risk setup.

Graveyard of Shadows, where the Skeletal Tomb entrance leads to Calvarion

Current access: diary or the specific boss task

Enter the Skeletal Tomb in level 21 Wilderness, north-east of Ferox Enclave in the Graveyard of Shadows. Current access requires the hard Wilderness Diary or a Vet’ion boss Slayer task. A skeleton task does not bypass the diary requirement.

There is no additional Slayer-level requirement for the normal encounter. Around 70 melee combat skills and useful offensive prayers are reasonable preparation targets, not entry gates. Protect from Melee at 43 Prayer is particularly useful for the summoned hellhounds.

The lair has a 50,000-coin access fee that can be taken from the bank. It is not a new 50,000-coin charge for every ordinary entry, but the fee can be lost to another player. Check the entry message rather than carrying a large coin stack through the Wilderness.

A direct approach uses Carrallanger teleport or its tablet for the graveyard. A ring of dueling to Ferox Enclave followed by travel north-east is an accessible alternative. Know the small tombstone entrance before beginning a supply-heavy trip.

Bank item

Learner option

What to check

Main weapon

A reliable crush weapon, such as a zombie axe on crush or a dragon mace

The selected attack style matters; a slash-capable weapon is not automatically using crush.

Necklace

Salve amulet (e) if unlocked

Calvar’ion is undead; the Salve and Slayer-helmet bonuses do not stack.

Armour

Replaceable supporting gear with useful strength or prayer bonuses

Inspect the complete Items Kept on Death result beyond level 20 Wilderness.

Supplies

Food, prayer restoration and melee boosts

Movement prevents boss damage, but mistakes and player attacks still need recovery.

Escape

Charged level-30 teleport or unlocked royal seed pod

An ordinary level-20 teleport does not work at the usual entrance level.

Wilderness weapon alternative

Charged Viggora’s or ursine chainmace if deliberately chosen

Budget for ether and its death risk, not only the protected weapon.

Crush and Salve before unnecessary gear switches

Calvar’ion has very low crush defence compared with his other defences. Choose an appropriate crush style and verify it after equipping the weapon. A smaller supporting armour budget can still produce workable damage when the main weapon and necklace are suitable.

The Salve amulet (e) is valuable against this undead boss. Its bonus does not stack with the Slayer helmet bonus, so a task is not a reason to assume both apply together. The enhanced melee Salve does not need an imbue solely to provide its melee benefit.

A Wilderness chainmace can be effective with its actual charges, but it adds ether risk. It is an option rather than an access requirement. Start with a weapon you understand and an amount of equipment you can replace.

Bring only necessary switches. The core fight does not demand three combat styles. More expensive inventory items can also change which items are protected on death, so repeat the risk-screen check after adding a special weapon or jewellery.

Calvarion in his normal skeletal form holding a sword and shield

Enter with the PvP and teleport rules understood

Use PK Skull Prevention and inspect the complete Wilderness death-risk setup before entry. The Skeletal Tomb is singles-plus: a player can attack you while you are fighting Calvar’ion. Boss aggression is not a shield against a player killer.

If you are entering on the task exception without the hard diary, any player entering the tomb creates a three-tick teleport delay for players inside. Completing the hard diary removes that particular delay. Neither route removes Tele Block, so an eligible teleport is an option rather than a survival guarantee.

Keep the exit direction in view and leave yourself clear floor. Calvar’ion moves towards you between attacks, allowing you to keep the fight closer to the exit when positioning permits. Do not trade a clean dodge for a frantic attempt to stand on one fixed tile.

If another player enters, react to the change promptly. Your health, prayer and escape take priority over finishing the next hit. Do not wait for a nearly dead boss if the situation has become a PvP problem.

Lightning: the sword animation is not a melee prayer cue

Calvar’ion launches targeted lightning around the arena. The marked tiles warn where the strikes will land, and each bolt affects a 3×3 area. Move onto clear floor outside the dangerous area rather than shifting a single tile and remaining beside a marked strike.

During the usual lightning animation he appears to swing his sword, but it does not create an ordinary melee hit. Protect from Melee does not block the lightning. Your answer to the boss’s floor attacks is movement; the melee prayer has its separate job against hellhounds.

Continue looking at nearby marks while moving. Running from one targeted tile into another is not a successful dodge. Resume attacks once the destination is clear, accepting a missed attack when it buys a clean position.

If you see repeated hits despite maintaining prayer, inspect your destination and the full strike area. Raising Defence or switching overheads does not replace leaving a lightning explosion.

Fight event

Action

Avoid

Lightning marks appear

Move onto clear tiles outside the strike’s surrounding area.

Treating Protect from Melee as protection against the floor.

Shield raised and shadows appear

Leave the indicated area, including dangerous tiles beneath the boss.

Stepping underneath as a universal answer to every attack.

Two hellhounds appear near half health

Protect from Melee, kill both, then return to Calvar’ion.

Spending attacks on an immune boss.

First form reaches zero

Avoid the transition lightning and prepare for the faster second form.

Looting or switching off attention after only one health bar.

A player enters

Reassess health, prayer and the viable escape immediately.

Assuming singles-plus prevents interruption.

Shield bash: follow the shadows, not a memorised direction

When he prepares a shield bash nearby, shadows mark the threatened area. It can extend beside him or around him, and standing underneath can also be dangerous. Move outside the actual pattern you see.

A hit can deal substantial damage and prevent attacks for several seconds. If you cannot attack afterwards, stabilise and wait for the effect to end rather than running back into a second hazard. The boss is not necessarily immune because your character briefly stops attacking.

Keep enough open floor to choose a different direction. Repeatedly forcing attacks from the same cramped position makes the next bash harder to avoid. A simple move-and-attack rhythm is more useful for learning than maximising every possible hit.

Do not import the phase-transition positioning into this attack. A tile that avoids one pattern can be unsafe during another; the visible cue determines the response.

Hellhounds and the second form

At about half health in the normal form, Calvar’ion summons two skeletal hellhounds. They make him immune while alive. Activate Protect from Melee and kill both before returning to the boss, while continuing to dodge his floor attacks.

The normal form reaching zero is the midpoint of the kill. Calvar’ion restores his health and produces orange transition lightning. Move clear of the marked areas, then continue the same movement routine against the enraged form.

The second form attacks faster and restores any Defence drained in the first form. If you use defence-reducing specials, do not assume the first form’s drain remains for the entire fight. The negative crush defence makes basic weapon choice and clean movement more important than a complicated special sequence.

At about half health in the enraged form, a second pair of stronger hellhounds appears. Kill them with melee protection, then finish the boss. You have only completed the kill when the second form dies. A very delayed second phase can revert, so avoid treating the room as a place to bank midway.

Loot, bank and improve one repeatable mistake

Collect the loot after the second form dies and reassess before the next spawn. Calvar’ion shares major collection goals with Vet’ion, including the ring of the gods, Voidwaker blade and pet. The smaller variant has different reward rates; it is not a guaranteed shortcut to a unique.

Supply drops can help extend a trip, but do not rely on a particular food or restore drop to survive the current fight. Bank valuable loot and replenish the actual consumables you used. Looting-bag contents remain at risk until banked.

If kills are slow, verify crush style and the correct Salve before buying upgrades. If damage is high, check lightning footprints, bash shadows and whether you are killing the hellhounds promptly. If escape failed, revisit the diary delay, teleport limits and Tele Block rather than assuming the item was broken.

This is an unsafe Wilderness encounter for Hardcore accounts. A clean mechanical kill reduces boss damage; it does not eliminate PvP or status risk. Learn one consistent complete kill before extending the trip.

Choose the next account upgrade

Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
