Artio is easiest to learn as a distance-control fight: freeze or bind her, deal ranged or magic damage from space, and switch to Protect from Magic for the white orb. The roar at each trap threshold breaks the freeze, so the fight is not one opening cast followed by standing still. This guide covers a practical first solo kill in Hunter’s End.
Current entry and a real escape option
Artio’s lair is Hunter’s End at level 21 Wilderness. You need the hard Wilderness Diary or a specific Callisto boss Slayer task. An ordinary bear assignment does not bypass the diary requirement. There is no separate Slayer-level gate for the normal boss.
The room is singles-plus, so players can attack while you are engaged with Artio. Inspect your complete Items Kept on Death result and enable PK Skull Prevention before travelling. A smaller boss is not a safe PvP environment.
Without the hard diary, entry through the task exception leaves you subject to a three-tick teleport delay when a player enters. The diary removes that delay, but not Tele Block. Bring an actual level-30 teleport, with its charges or quest unlock, rather than a normal level-20 tablet.
A ring of dueling to Ferox Enclave followed by travel north is a straightforward approach. Carrallanger travel followed by movement west is another option. Confirm the entrance and shared access-fee message before committing to the attempt.
Bank decision | Practical option | Check |
|---|---|---|
Control spell | An available ice spell on Ancient Magicks, or Entangle on the standard book | Meet the actual level, spellbook and rune requirements. |
Damage | A suitable ranged weapon or magic setup | Bring compatible ammunition or enough charges for the trip. |
Casting gear | A small switch giving positive Magic attack bonus when the control spell is cast | A mostly ranged outfit can leave the actual cast setup below the useful accuracy condition. |
Prayer | Protect from Missiles at distance, with a Magic switch for the white orb | Protect from Melee only partially reduces her dangerous close attack. |
Supplies | Food, restores, relevant boost, run-energy support and escape | Freezing does not remove trap mistakes or player threats. |
Risk | Replaceable supporting gear and a limited charge/ammunition load | Check the full inventory, not just the main weapon. |
Choose one workable spellbook and damage route
Ancient ice spells combine damage and freezing. Ice Burst is available at 70 Magic, Ice Blitz at 82 and Ice Barrage at 94, with different control durations. Choose the spell you can cast, rather than packing a barrage setup on an account below its requirement.
Entangle at 79 Magic is another control option on the standard spellbook. It does not deal the damage that an ice attack does. Pair it with an appropriate damage weapon, and do not assume standard-book utility and Ancient ice spells are simultaneously available without a spellbook-switching arrangement.
A ranged weapon plus a small casting switch gives a clear two-part routine: control, then damage. Magic damage can also work. Artio is not immune to Magic, so a ranged weapon is not an absolute requirement to complete the fight.
Build the casting switch to give a positive total Magic attack bonus at the moment of the opening freeze. The opening eligible control hit on an unfrozen Artio has a guaranteed-hit interaction when the condition is met. Verify later freezes actually land instead of treating that opening interaction as permission to ignore accuracy or freeze state.
Open with control and keep room around you
Artio spawns towards the south, near the exit; entering players arrive to the north. Be ready to cast and move rather than walking directly into her melee reach. Establish the freeze, create distance and start your chosen damage routine.
At distance, use Protect from Missiles against the normal crescent-shaped ranged projectile. When she can reach you, her melee attack is dangerous even through Protect from Melee, which only reduces it partially. Do not stand beside her expecting an ordinary fully blocked melee hit.
Watch the boss begin moving as the control effect ends. Reapply your spell when appropriate and maintain a path through clear floor. Different spells have different durations; copying a barrage timer while using a shorter spell is a common way to get caught.
A successful cast is a visible event, not merely the act of clicking the spell. If the boss keeps moving, prioritise spacing and a new safe control attempt. Do not keep attacking as though the freeze succeeded because the animation played.
Cue | Action | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
White orb travelling towards you | Activate Protect from Magic before it reaches you. | Leaving Missiles on because the boss remains far away. |
Orb resolves | Return to the distant ranged protection while maintaining control. | Leaving Magic active for every following normal shot. |
Roar and red glow near 66% or 33% health | Expect the freeze to break; find clear ground and re-control when the stance ends. | Assuming the previous freeze lasts through the threshold. |
Bear trap in your path | Choose a different tile and preserve distance. | Clicking through it while trying to maintain every attack. |
Artio reaches melee distance | Create space, recover and re-establish control. | Treating melee prayer as complete protection. |
White orb: switch on arrival, avoid the wall penalty
The white orb is the Magic knockback special. Protect from Magic needs to be active when it reaches you. React while it travels, rather than waiting for the knockback animation to confirm the mistake.
Without the matching protection, the orb pushes you backwards and can stun you. Hitting a wall before completing the knockback greatly increases the damage, potentially reaching 50 when trapped directly against it. Distance from the boss alone does not solve that wall penalty.
Keep space around your position when practical, especially as traps spread. The orb has a splash area around its target, which matters if another player is present. Your prayer is still your own responsibility even when the projectile appears aimed elsewhere nearby.
After it resolves, return to Protect from Missiles for the normal distant attacks and continue checking freeze state. The defensive prayer switch and your offensive weapon switch serve different purposes; do not let one hide the other.
Roars, traps and re-freezing
At roughly 66% and 33% health, Artio roars and spreads red ghostly bear traps. The roar breaks the existing bind or freeze. Prepare for her to move again rather than relying on the remaining duration from your last cast.
Wait for her to return to the normal stance before reapplying control. Move along a clear route while doing so. A trap deals damage and briefly binds you, potentially letting Artio close the distance while you cannot move.
Later trap coverage is refreshed as the fight continues. Check each new destination before clicking, especially when a pathfinding click towards the boss would cross a trap. A tile that was clear during the first phase can stop being suitable.
For a first kill, prioritise a stable control-and-damage rhythm over experimental low-effort healing setups. More advanced methods can tolerate melee pressure with specific gear, but that is a different supply and risk plan from keeping a learner safely at distance.
Finish and evaluate the actual bottleneck
Artio shares major goals with Callisto, including the Voidwaker hilt and Callisto cub, with different reward rates. Bank a valuable drop and refill the supplies you actually used. A looting bag’s contents remain unprotected until banked.
If food disappears quickly, distinguish missed orb prayers from melee contact and trap damage. If control repeatedly fails, inspect the spellbook, runes, cast gear and actual freeze state. Damage upgrades cannot fix the wrong spell or a negative casting setup.
Keep your escape usable and respond promptly to entering players. Do not assume finishing the next hit is more important than a player threat. The encounter remains unsafe for Hardcore accounts even when the boss mechanics are controlled.
Choose the next account upgrade
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
