Amoxliatl rewards short, deliberate movements: leave the ice beneath you, destroy unstable blocks and restore your protection prayer when it is switched off. This post-quest guide explains the regular encounter, a practical crush setup and the mistakes that turn a low-pressure kill into repeated food loss.
Unlock the regular fight
Complete The Heart of Darkness before returning for the repeatable Amoxliatl encounter. Its quest requirements include 48 Slayer; you do not need an active Slayer assignment for ordinary repeat kills. The post-quest boss is a little stronger than the quest version, so bring a real combat inventory even if the quest fight felt comfortable.
A pendant of ates teleport to the Twilight Temple statue is convenient once that destination is activated. Quetzal travel via Salvager Overlook or Quetzacalli Gorge is another option; the relevant landing access must already be available. Return through the temple’s central chamber and use the post-quest lift shortcut to the Tower of Ascension.
Fight in your own solo instance. Set your prayers and organise your inventory before entering, with food and prayer restoration in easy reach. Use your first trip to learn both specials rather than trying to stretch supplies through unfamiliar attacks.
Preparation | Learner option | What it solves |
|---|---|---|
Weapon | A reliable crush weapon | A sensible default against the boss’s melee defences. |
Multi-hit alternative | Dual macuahuitl or glacial temotli if available and suitable | The negative flat armour benefits repeated hits, but attack speed still matters. |
Prayer | Protect from Magic, with restoration supplies | Reduces the incoming magical attack; does not protect against floor damage. |
Inventory | Food, prayer restoration, combat boosts and a usable teleport | Allows mistakes without forcing a risky attempt to finish at low health. |
Optional outside recovery | Temple moths with the actual Hunter requirements | Requires 75 Hunter with a net or 85 barehanded; not a universal substitute for supplies. |
Choose a weapon you can use comfortably
Crush melee gives a straightforward way to damage Amoxliatl and reach unstable ice blocks. The boss has negative flat armour, which can make fast multi-hit weapons attractive. Do not interpret that as “every weapon with two hits is better”: slow options still lose time between attacks.
Use equipment appropriate to your account and keep the inventory simple. An ordinary dependable crush setup is preferable to a complicated switch you cannot use while dodging. Protect from Magic should be easy to reactivate without hunting through interfaces.
Amoxliatl also has a fire weakness, but a Magic-only setup adds weapon or positioning decisions when unstable ice appears. For a first melee kill, learn the room with one main style. A different damage route can be tested later once the two special attacks are familiar.
The basic loop: attack, move, attack
Keep Protect from Magic active. Standard attacks create ice spikes around the arena and beneath your position, leaving a persistent pool on the original tile. Prayer helps against the initial attack; standing on the pool continues to deal damage. If you see repeated small hits while your protection prayer is on, check the floor before changing equipment.
Move about two tiles onto clear floor and let the boss follow, then resume attacking. A deliberate short move is easier to control than running across the room. Look at the destination tile before clicking: dodging one pool into another accomplishes nothing.
Keep enough open space for a new pool and for the next special. If the area around you becomes crowded, reposition before health is low. Eating while remaining on damaging ice can consume the food’s benefit almost immediately.
Attack | What you do | What failure costs |
|---|---|---|
Normal ice attack | Leave the marked or newly dangerous tile and resume from clear floor. | Persistent ice deals damage even with Protect from Magic active. |
Unstable Ice | Attack every ice block promptly with melee. | Unbroken blocks explode into surrounding pools and heal the boss. |
Icicle Crash | Immediately reactivate Protect from Magic after prayers switch off. | The projectile can hit hard when the prayer remains disabled. |
After either special | Check health, protection prayer and the next safe movement tile. | Returning to damage too early can hide an inactive prayer or a dangerous tile. |
Unstable Ice: clear every block
One to four unstable ice blocks can appear. You have 15 ticks, approximately nine seconds, to destroy them. Melee hits against these blocks deal guaranteed maximum damage and use a very short attack delay, so click through all the blocks instead of treating them like normal high-health enemies.
An unresolved block explodes into a 3×3 area of dangerous floor and heals Amoxliatl. Missing multiple blocks therefore creates both a survival problem and extra boss health. Finish the block sequence before returning to the boss, and avoid assuming the last visible animation means the last block is dead.
Keep your weapon equipped and do not spend most of the window opening another interface. If you need emergency food, recover enough to survive and continue clearing. Once the blocks are gone, choose a clean tile for the next normal attack.
A common learning error is killing the nearest block and immediately clicking the boss. Sweep your view around the room once more: the number spawned varies, so there is no fixed single-block response.
Icicle Crash: restore protection first
Icicle Crash turns off your prayers. Reactivate Protect from Magic before the projectile arrives; its unprotected hit can reach 34. Re-enable offensive prayers afterwards when your protection and position are secure.
Do not rely only on the quick-prayer icon’s previous state. The special has disabled the prayers themselves, so verify that protection is actually active again. Keep some prayer points available throughout the kill; clicking protection with an empty prayer bar does not solve the attack.
The first special arrives after a variable number of normal attacks, and the two specials then alternate. Use the sequence to prepare, but react to the actual cue instead of counting attacks while ignoring the screen.
There are advanced positions that manipulate which special occurs. They reduce room to move and are unnecessary for a beginner. A consistent full-room kill that handles both attacks gives you a more useful foundation.
Supplies, repeat trips and useful goals
Temple moths can support prayer recovery outside the fight when you meet their Hunter requirements. Bring normal prayer restoration until you have confirmed your route and recovery method. A low-supply plan copied from a high-level account may not work on yours.
Glacial temotli and frozen tears are among the encounter’s rewards and progression hooks. Treat loot as a longer-term outcome rather than a reason to stay for one more dangerous kill. Bank when you no longer have enough supplies to recover from a missed prayer or block.
If kills are slow, first check whether unstable blocks are healing the boss. If food disappears despite protection, inspect the floor. If damage comes in one large spike after a special, practise restoring Protect from Magic. These fixes usually matter more than a marginal equipment upgrade.
Once you can complete several controlled kills, compare weapon performance and supply use over a reasonable sample. Avoid judging a setup by one lucky kill or presenting a fixed profit estimate as a guarantee.
Choose the next account upgrade
Use the OSRS PvM progression guide to connect this encounter to your next unlock. Improve the repeated mechanical error first, then choose equipment that solves a specific damage, range or sustain problem.
